Re: Newline talking bathroom scale help needed

I just got off the phone with amazon a few minutes ago and they're sending me an address label for me to send the scale back that I believe is defective.

They are sending me a replacement as well and the surprising thing is that I'll likely receive the new one before I send the defective one back because they're sending me the address label through snail mail due to me not having a working printer at this time.

Hopefully the second scale works as expected.

An interesting line of discussion, as I purchased my scale three or four years ago, and initially it operated as expected.

However now, when it tells me to step on the scale, I do, and it continuously reports "standstill". On one occasion after about 15 seconds of this, it gave me a reading. Subsequently, no reading and just the instruction.

I replaced the battery's, and nothing has improved. Very disappointing, indeed.

If you hit upon a solution, please share it.

I'll call amazon and see if they'll send me a replacement scale.

Hi all,

Last week Gerald Levy and one other person recommended a talking
bathroom scale, it looks like the brand name is Newline from what it
shows on amazon. I bought it and got it yesterday but after inserting
the batteries so far all my mom and I can get it to do is to say please
wait when we tap it, then there's a beep a few seconds later and then
the scale shuts off.

My mom has been the one doing this so far so I'm not sure at what point
she steps on the scale but what might we be doing wrong? Is there a
certain procedure to follow to make the scale work?

Btw my mom says that after it says please wait there's some letters that
come up on the display that she says looks like out 2, but she says that
she's not sure because apparently the entire letters aren't shown.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Way, Way back in the old days:
I connected a Braille Blazer (Braille embosser) to the parallel port on my computer.  Then, when I got into the BIOS screen, I could do a print screen and the entire screen was sent to either Braille or speech via the Blazer.  By reading the Braille or listening to the speech, one could find differences based on the result of a recent key press.

Very slow process, and big waste of paper; but it did get the job done.

So your BlindShell phone started having problems after only two
months? How easy was it to get a replacement? Did you have to send
the phone back directly to the manufacturer in the Czech Republic? Or
did the merchant you bought it from handle the replacement? I hate to
say I told you so, but I warned potential customers of this phone
that buying a cell phone made by an overseas manufacturer with an
unproven track record could be problematic. This is what killed the
Lucia and Odin Mobile phones: they were made by obscure, overseas
companies with no service facilities in theUS, and when they went
belly-up due to poor sales, their customers got stuck with expensive
paperweights. And although IRIE promises excellent customer service,
for the Smart Vision, the fact of the matter is that they are a
distributor, not a manufacturer, which means that if you have trouble
with your Smart Vision phone and return it to them for repair, they,
in turn, may have to send it back to the manufacturer, Kapsys, which
could be very time consuming, or else order parts from Kapsys to
repair it themselves, which would also be time consuming. And with
the pandemic raging out of control in many parts of the country, the
last thing you want to do right now is to stand on line at your local
post office to send a broken cell phone back to the merchant or
manufacturer. Someone commented that they were extremely satisfied
with their Kapsys Captain GPS device. However, I recall that when it
was first introduced, it was reviewed by AFB Access World and found
to be highly inaccurate, and it disappeared from the market within
six months, never to be heard about again. This seems to be a common
fate for many specialized products for the blind that are either
poorly designed or else are too expensive for the average blind
consumer. I apologize for coming across as "negative", but blind
consumers should be aware of the pitfalls of buying expensive
products especially designed for the blind made by companies with
poor or unproven track records in the US. A major reason why the
IPhone has become so popular with many blind consumers is that it is
made by a large, mainstream manufacturer which has stores,
distributors and facilities all over the US, so that it is easy to
get it serviced without having to jump through hoops.

What it sounds like you are truly speaking of is not CMOS, but what is
called the BIOS.

The BIOS (Basic Input Output System) is where the boot sequence (boot order)
is determined for the machine and how you the user gets to this, is
different for each various machine.

Just go online and search for your make and BIOS keystroke.

Subject: [TechTalk] How to get into CMOS with speech access

Hello list
I am just wondering if, after so many years, if there is a way to access
CMOS. I want to change the boot sequence but to get sighted assistance who
knows about CMOS is a challenge and I do not want to unplug everything to
take the pc to a shop.
