Thanks. I did get the update installed. I did the update but now I have two versions on my desktop. The second icon will not recognize my password. What it said was that I got blocked because I was using an insecure app. (Thunderbird?) Anyway, for now, I can use the original until this gets straighten out.

Re: Old Kindles/New Kindles
David Goldfield <david.goldfield@...>
Hi. I am almost 100% certain that your friend's daughter is not correct. First, when I used to own a Kindle Keyboard, sometimes referred to as a Kindle 3, I used a service that allowed you to email documents which would show up on your Kindle. I have not heard of that service being discontinued but I'd need to research it to confirm this. Also, you should be able to just transfer files from a PC to the device via a USB connection. Also, bear in mind that Amazon now has two separate product lines
when it comes to reading. One product line is called the Kindle
and it primarily is for reading books as well as magazines,
newspapers and even comic books. While you can browse the Kindle
store and purchase content the device known as the Kindle is just
for reading that content. The other product line is called the
Fire tablet. This device runs a variant of Android and also allows
for the browsing, purchasing, downloading and reading of content
from the Kindle store but it also functions as an actual tablet
with the features you would expect from a tablet, such as apps for
email, Web browsing, TV and music streaming, etc. It doesn't come
with Google's app store known as the Google Play store but it can
be sideloaded. This is technically not a Kindle although many
people use the term Kindle when they're really talking about the
Fire tablet. This is partially Amazon's fault as the first tablet
they released was called the Kindle Fire but they eventually
stopped adding the name Kindle to their tablets. David Goldfield, Assistive Technology Specialist JAWS Certified, 2019 www.davidgoldfield.org On 9/15/2020 4:38 PM, Walter Ramage via

chromebooks or iPads?

Hi, I was thinking of getting a Chromebook, maybe, to play around with. I have an iPad and like it a lot because the voiceover screen reader works great with my orbit reader braille display. So does chromeVox and chromebooks have as good of braille support? I know iPad supports Japanese braille very good. Does the Chromebook? Or is iPad and jaws or NVDA on windows still the best for braille users? And how does the play store and other android apps work on chromebooks? Are they better than on android phones?

Old Kindles/New Kindles
Walter Ramage
Hi to all. This is an enquiry on behalf of a friend as I don't use a kindle.
My friend has an old Kindle, 9 years old. She is able to download books from the kindle store and books she gets from other sources she can upload to her kindle after converting the book to the Kindle format.
She has entertained getting a new up-to-date kindle but when she told her daughter her plans her daughter discouraged her from doing so as the "newer" kindles no longer allow you to upload third party books to the device and you can only use Kindle books purchased from Amazon.
Is this true? are there any current Kindle devices that allow the upload of third party eBooks? If it is possible, which model is it and how simple or complicated is the process? If anybody knows the answer to these questions I look forward to hearing from you. Walter.

I don't know if it means anything but when using Brave and Chrome, both more or less the same browser, I get a security message that the certificate is invalid. I don't know if it matters. Macrium Reflect is a free image backup and restoration program. It is used to create a backup image of your local drive on an external portable hard drive that can be used to restore your system in the event of a catastrophic failure or if you install a new local drive, as you did. The program includes an option for creating a rescue CD that can be used to restore the backup image from the external portable drive. Creating a backup image with Macrium Reflect is completely accessible with JAWS. However, sighted help is needed to restore this image using the rescue CD because their is no speech available during the restoration procedure. Your technician may have installed this program on your computer to create a backup image of your hard drive on an external drive before he installed the new SSD to replace it, and then used this image to restore your newSSD to the state your computer was in before he installed the SSd.

It is entirely possible that the password for those e-mail addresses will not actually change until the new one is used for the first time by the e-mail client. Centralized and synchronized passwords operate in such a way that an existing password will continue to work until and unless you supply the new one, at which point the sync takes place. Apple has been using a single point of access style for a very, very long time now. And the only reason I can imagine that those other accounts are still working if you have not updated it in the client(s) is because it's allowing ongoing access with the immediately previous password. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 2004, Build 19041 Always remember that computers are just glorified light bulbs - they rarely fail in continuous use and usually go pop when turned off and on. ~ Technician with the username Computer Bloke, on Technibble.com

I don't know what is causing it. Do you have more than one account? If so, you need to turn off the setting for all accounts individually.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
You said this just started happening. Brian spoke of possible corruption of the program and that could be. You may want to uninstall and install it again as he suggests. Something detrimental evidently happened since you didn't have this behavior before. Even if you solve the problem, you may still want to consider the following: One thing I encourage people to do is use Thunderbird portable. You can keep your installed version and try the portable version so you will have no delay or interruption in receiving e-mail. The reasons I say that people should use the portable version are that you can move the program to any machine you want and have all your e-mail and settings, except that I don't know if you will have message rules transferred. You can run it from something like a thumb drive if you are using a machine that isn't yours and that you don't have the program on. And you can keep a backup copy so that if the program becomes corrupted, you can simply delete it and copy the backup copy to the location where you usually have the program. To keep the backup copy current, you can delete the backup when you want and copy the one you are using to that location again. This will preserve your e-mail and any changes you have made to the program, such as settings changes and probably add-ons as well. You won't have to trouble shoot problems anymore that arise from corruption of the program. You can just replace it by deleting it and copying the backup copy to the location you run the program from. Although I use the Brave browser for most of my browsing, I use Firefox portable off and on and I use the portable version for the same reasons. I use portable versions of programs where they either do everything the installed version does or where the portable version does the things I want it to do.
