Hello list
Now I am confused. On the Windows 10 & JAWS list I asked a question about
the volume. My subject was something like "how to raise the jaws volume when
using a USB sound card". The administrator immediately warned me not to use
questions in a subject line and when I asked why this should not be done he
replied that I must keep my smart mouth or I'll be gone and when I answered
he banned me. This tech list is very important for me, so please tell if I
may put a question in the subject field? As I was trying to explain on the
other list I like to pose the question in the subject field because then
listers know exactly what help I want and listers who do not have the answer
dan just delete the mail. If my subject was "jaws volume" then it could mean
many things, so I am really confused. I really want to start a war but just
for the importance to me of this list, can one of the moderators please
explain what must and what must not be stated in a subject line for this
list. Sorry for this but I am a bit upset because I am really not a trouble
maker.

Re: Tracking a kitten

Ann Parsons

Hi all,

First question, did Kitty get out, or is she hiding or trapped in the house somewhere? Cats, especially kittens like to explore. Any closet door, cupboard door, basement door, attic door is fair game. So before you call the SPCA or the police, check all hidy-holes! Listen for unusual bumping or thumping. It may be kitty trying to get out of wherever she's trapped in the house.

Now if kitty has gotten outside, then, is she chipped? This is necessary if you're planning to let her out, and even if you aren't. Check with neighborhood organization, she may have gotten trapped in somebody's garage or under somebody's car. Chech any shrubbery. Check any sheds or garages. Check cars; anybody leave a car door open? That's a clear invitation to Kitty.

As for keeping track of her, the bell works best unless you want to train her with an electronic fence. Don't know how well they work on cats. I sure hope this person doesn't live on a busy road! If this house or apartment is in suburbs I'd worry about coyotes or racoons or other wild life. Best to keep a cat inside these days. Good luck finding kitty.

Re: Accessible windows software to convert image files to PDF files

Ann Parsons

Hi all,

Since the .jpg files are images and have to be converted to .docx or .html files to be readable by somebody who is using a screen reader, why would you want to change them back to image files as .pdf's? If you're sending these files to sighted people, then leave them alone. If sending to blind or VI people convert them to .docx or .html or .rtf, something the recipient can read without jumping through hoops. Yes, Jaws works but--. Since Jaws' OCR is an afterthought program, I wouldn't trust it to convert .jpg files. You need Open Book or Kurzie or Docuscan Plus to do this accurately. If you want to save the .docx files as .pdf, you can do that in Word.

I still don't understand why you'd want to do this, Frank. It just seems like a lot of work for naught. But hey, that's why I'm asking for clarification.

That definitely will work. But what I can't figure out here is whether said JPG files are, say, scans of articles that the PDF is wanted to be able to do OCR on. If that's the case, using Word to save as PDF and then OCR-ing the PDF and saving the text layer will work.
If they're not text-based image files, I can't imagine why PDF format is preferable.

Hi all,

I don't understand this at all. A .pdf file is an image file. That's why it must be converted to text. What kind of image file is this that we're talking about?

Hi Brian,

Yes, that is for the version of Chromium based edge. & here is the
link for the page where the webinar & accompanying material would
appear soon.

Yep, with a few small exceptions, the retention of the Favorites terminology
but implemented just like Bookmarks are in every other Chromium-based
browser being one of them.

I haven't seen the FS webinar to which you make reference, but the only word
of warning I have is to make sure that it's for the new Chromium-based Edge,
not original Edge, which should be gone from any Windows 10 that's being
kept up-to-date at this point.

Re: how to stop chrome opening address management when filling in a form on line

Brian Vogel <britechguy@...>

1. Open Chrome Settings
2. Search on Autofill
3. Activate Addresses and more from the 3 options presented (it's the last one)
4. Throw the toggle for Save and fill addresses to Off.
5. Close Chrome Settings

You should not have the issue you describe occur again.

laptop won't wake up from keyboards from sleep, why?

Adrien

Hi

For some unknown reason my laptop has started in the last couple of days to stop waking from sleep when I press either the laptop keyboard or the wifi keyboard, it used to be so sensitive I only had to touch the wifi keyboard  and the pc would wake up. I have checked the keyboard settings as suggested by google but it is all ok, what else can I check please? This is inconvenient as I have to rest on my bed due to an injury.

There are tracking chips that can be implanted in pets (or service animals).  They are expensive.

Tracking a kitten

David Mehler

Hello,

I'm throwing this out to a bunch of lists. I got a friend who just got
a therapy kitten, about six weeks old. She has gone missing and when
we find her i'd like to make sure that we can track her. The kitten
does have a collar with a bell on that's it. I'm wondering if anyone
has any suggestions?

Thanks.
Dave.

Hi,

What Windows are you running? If you have Win 10, find your JPG file. hit
the keystrokes for print. This will bring up a list of options, arrow to
Microsoft to PDF and hit enter and that should do it. I had to do this
recently, I believe I am recalling the steps accurately.
If you're using Win 7 I can't say if the above will work or not.

Did you look in disk management to check to see if it is detected there? You may have to assign it a drive letter and format any unallocated space.

I know the cable is attached properly, only one way to connect it. When I plug it in to USB port, I hear the ding like it recognizes it but doesn't show up in This PC. Software does not recognize it. Waiting to hear back from Crucial. They have no phone support. Won't buy from them again because of their support.

Either a bad SATA USB cable or you did not correctly attach the cable to the device.

Hope I can get a refund. Has anyone had success in installing a SSD of another brand?------------------  How accessible was the software?

Re: Installing a SSD drive. Accessible cloning software

Geoff Eden

Not knowing exactly what hardware you have, if it is an external disk caddy, you may find it useful to rock the drive in his cradle to ensure all of the contacts make.

I have one five or six-year-old hard drive that just came out of my Dell desktop that does not mate with all of the contacts in my six or seven-year-old disc caddy. It does, fortunately, mate with all of the contacts in my wavlink caddy which I used to clone it to an SSD, which is now running my Dell.

This disc caddy clones the drive without the need for a connection to a computer. It reports readiness and progress with a series of LEDs, but after one reads the instructions carefully, one can time sequence the events, and be very patient, and get perfect cloning results.
