That's because somehow someway some thing is selected.
It'll take a little playing around to make sure nothing is selected, but how you
go about that I can't tell you. I've ran into the same issue with
various computers and I can't tell you how I got the Sort by and Group by to
become available, but I can tell you it's because something is
selected.

Hi all. I have two questions the first is about the view in Win10. I understand that the default view in Win10 is details but I am used to working with list views. In Win10 how can I change all folders to list view and to make that view permanent?
The second question is about JAWS. In previous versions I could change things such as graphics by doing insert +V and then looking for graphics and change the setting via the spacebar. However now I'm using JAWS 2020 I can do an insert +v but when I find graphics the space bar has no effect. How do I change these settings please.
Any help appreciated. I am using Win10 and JAWS 2020. Walter.

Re: Help with a win10& JAWS issues

Hi Walter,
Let's start with the graphics setting first: 1. Open the Jaws quick settings with, Insert + V, and navigate to the graphics settings. 2. See if you can up or down arrow to the other settings, if so press the, F6, key 1 time and this should put you back to where you can press the spacebar to toggle through the settings. 3. Press the spacebar to the preferred setting, tab to the Okay button and press enter to save / close. Note: Pressing the, F6 key, switches the settings to be navigated between a combobox and using the spacebar to toggle through them. Whatever the correct lingo is for this I don't know, but just press the F6 key to experiment. Now for putting files and folders into list view: 1. Press, Windows key + E, to open ThisPC or Windows Explorer. 2. Open the context menu with the applications key or Shift + F10. 3. On the, View submenu, press enter or right arrow to open, down arrow to, List, and press enter. Pressing enter will take you out of the context menu. 4. Again open the context menu with the applications key or Shift + F10. On the, Sort by submenu, press enter or right arrow to open, and you want both the, Name and Ascending, items checked. 5. Again open the context menu with the applications key or Shift + F10. Go down to the, Group by submenu, open it and you want, None, selected here. 6. Make sure nothing is selected and press, Alt + F, then press the letter, O, to open Folder options, and, Control + tab, to the, View tab / page. 7. You should hear, View Page You can apply this view (such as Details or Icons) to all folders of this type. Folder views Reset Folders Button. Press the spacebar and choose the, Yes, option tab to, Okay, and press enter to save / close. 8. Now go to your Documents folder and check your file and folder View settings and if they're not the same use the steps above to do the same . Take care and stay safe. Mike. Sent from my iBarstool. Re: Disabling "what device did you plug in?" announcement
Jeff Christiansen
My apologies The dialog’s body is mainly a list of possible devices. Headphones, speakers and so on. Any device can be selected just like any other list box. At the bottom of this list and above the ok and cancel buttons is where the do not show this dialog checkbox is showing. I’ve looked at my Dell laptop for this setting but do not see it. I think the only way to make the dialog stop showing is the checkbox I have described.

There is indeed a checkbox to stop these dialogs from showing, however, the dialog is not the most accessible. Possibly using the touch cursor, if you are a JAWS user, might help access the checkbox. I have always needed sighted assistance to place a check mark into that box as I have had the same experience with not being able to access it.

Hi group,
On my Dell laptop with Win 10, every time I plug in headphones I get an announcement through the laptop’s speakers asking what audio device I’ve plugged in. Obviously, I’m plugging in headphones because I don’t want audio coming through the speakers. How do I turn this off? There is no “don’t show this message again” option in the dialogue. Thanks for your help with this issue.

Re: a question regarding Microsoft outlook
Brian Vogel <britechguy@...>
I am really unclear at this point as to what is being asked for.
It is easy, and the instructions have been given, to do a quick creation of a contact using the From field in an e-mail message. If the address is in the message body, which is how I interpreted, "If there is an address in a message, I'd like to put it right in to my book," Then Sugar's copy and paste method is the only one I know of for doing that. -- Brian - Windows 10 Pro, 64-Bit, Version 2004, Build 19041 Always remember that computers are just glorified light bulbs - they rarely fail in continuous use and usually go pop when turned off and on. ~ Technician with the username Computer Bloke, on Technibble.com

Re: Audio Description
Danny Park
Just go in and turn on audio description the way you normally would. In most cases there’s an SAP button or you go into the menu and turn on audio description. That’s all that should be necessary.

Usability of Touch Screen and Pen on Laptops
Bhavya shah
Dear all,
I am currently looking at purchasing a new, high-end laptop as I enter college. For context, I use NVDA on Windows, am not interested in Chrome OS or Mac OS, and I already use a Touch Screen Android Smartphone for simple stuff. I prefer doing any productivity tasks with keyboard shortcuts on my laptop rather than touch gestures on my phone, so I am proudly old-fashioned in that sense. Given that, how useful do you think is a laptop with a touch screen, a touch pen, and other fancy touchpad related features? Do such features have potential to be quite useful for a fully blind person? I am not sure how much of a factor the presence of such functionalities should play a role in my selection process. I would greatly appreciate your thoughts and inputs on this matter. Thanks. -- Best Regards Bhavya Shah Stanford University | Class of 2024 E-mail Address: bhavya.shah125@gmail.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/bhavyashah125/

Re: Disabling "what device did you plug in?" announcement
Brian Vogel <britechguy@...>
This sort of message is generally not from Windows, but from an audio manager program that was supplied with your sound card (whether that's integrated in the computer or was a plug-in card inside a desktop case). Check out what's running in your system tray, including the overflow area, and you'll likely find something like RealTek Audio Manager, or DTS Audio Control, or similar. You can typically bring up the context menu for same and through their settings set them not to start with Windows or to turn off selected or all notifications from them.
It's impossible to get more specific without knowing specifically what's running.
