I did what you said and it was unchecked.  I have no idea how that setting got unchecked when I deleted the older versions of Jaws.  If I have any other problems, I will be sure to post.  So glad that there are Jaws users here.  Thanks again and Happy New Year everyone!

Hi Shelley,
Okay.
1. Go to the Jaws context menu either by clicking on the Jaws shortcut that's on your desktop (if you have one on your desktop) or by pressing insert j
2. Once you get to the context menu Options will be the first thing that comes up.
3. Enter on options and tab 3 times to Autimatically start Jaws... button
Once you enter on that button a dialog box will come up and the first option is "Start Jaws at the log-on screen" and Jaws will tell you whether it's checked or unchecked. If it's unchecked then check it and tab to the okay button. You'll be asked to restart Jaws, once you do this then everything should be back to normal.
Hope these instructions are clear and simple enough... If not then sorry, hopefully someone else can give you simpler ones.

I don't think we changed anything. Maybe we hit something accidentally when we deleted them. When I downloaded 2021, I checked the box to have Jaws start up when I turn on the computer. If you can tell me where to check that, I would appreciate it. Maybe it got unchecked somehow.

Hi Group:

I deleted Jaws 2019 and 2020 because I now have Jaws 2021 and I didn't
need the other ones. Since I have taken the other versions off my
computer, now when I turn on the computer to sign in using my pin,
Jaws
2021 no longer says anything like it used to. It would always tell me to sign in and now it's not. Do you know how I can get this to talk again when I first turn on the computer? When I downloaded it a few months ago, I checked everything so it would turn on right away and it did. I'm not sure if we hit something taking off the other programs and now it's not turning on. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Simple Instructions would be most helpful. I'm not tech savvy. When I type in my pin, Jaws does come up but I need it right when I turn on the computer like it was.

Thank you so much.  I don't think Jaws is running from the system tray whatever that means.  It asked me if I wanted it to.  What would happen if I let it do whatever in the system tray?  I hit the insert J key and Jaws opened but I had to actually hit control O for options because it wasn't running from the system tray which I didn't know.  Once I got to where it said basic setting, I went over to automatically start Jaws and then I clicked on that.  It asked me if I wanted it to start when I first logged on and I said yes.  So the problem was when I deleted my other versions of Jaws, somehow that setting got unchecked.  I think it should be fine now.  If not, I will let you know.  Thanks again.

The option you want is under basic settings. Press insert J to move to the jaws window. Press enter. Tab over to automatically start jaws. Press enter. You will find check boxes for start jaws at the log on screen, as well as whether you want jaws to run for all users, or just you. Check the boxes you want, then tab to the ok button. Tab again to ok and press enter. This should do it.

Hi Group,

i haven't used JAWS for years as my default screen reader, but before you delete JAWS earlier versions, you should always use the merge settings feature or whatever the current version of that is now of days.  This will transfer all of your favorite settings from the older version to the latest version.

I think that utility still exists doesn't it?

Hey Joe, No worries, The K-lite codec pack is a collection of free
and most used windows compression and decompression utilities that are
added to your windows OS and made available to any installed programs
that wants to use them. You can go to the K-lite website directly and
download the program, but it's just easier to get it from ninite even
though the website is a little daunting at first,, here's how to do
it.

Go to:
https://ninite.com/accessible

Press the CTRL key and tap the HOME key to go to the top of the page.

Tap your H key to navigate down the page until you hear the heading MEDIA

Tap the X key or arrow down until you get to the K-lite codec option
and press the space bar to select it.

Pres the ALT key and tap the letter G key to jump down to the GET YOUR
NINITE button and it will automatically start the download.

Now, depending on which browser your using one of two things will happen.

1. The Download of the K-lite codec pack will appear in it's own
window with a progress bar as it's being installed to your pc.

or
2. The browser will prompt you to download the NINITE K lite download
installer.exe file. In which case you will need to open your file
explorer and navigate to your downloads folder and find that file and
press the enter key on it to begin the installation, and that will
open it's own window and show a progress bar while it's installing the
codecs to your pc.

In either case, when it's done, just press enter on the FINISH button
and your done.

I'd suggest restarting windows and after it's done rebooting, try to
open that wave file again and see if everythings back to normal.

Joe, in case you have not already ran the SFC and DISM utilities I will
share the following instructions, written by Brian Vogel. Running these
utilities may possibly resolve your issues.

Fixing "Weird Issues" under Windows 8 or Windows 10 Using the System
File Checker (SFC) and Deployment Imaging Servicing and Management (DISM)

If you are having "weird problems" with any Windows system, the first
thing you should do is to run the System File Checker (SFC). Open a
Command Prompt window using the "Run as Administrator" option. The
easiest way to do this is to hit the Windows Key, immediately enter the
text "Command Prompt" and getting the Command Prompt desktop app returned

as the first item. Gain focus on it and bring up the context menu either

via right click or hitting the menu/applications key [if your machine has

one] or Shift+F10 if it does not then selecting "Run as administrator"
from the context menu that appears. Once that elevated command prompt
window is opened, enter:
SFC /scannow
When it's finished look at its output to see if it found any corrupt files

and whether it was able to fix them.
If SFC reports that it was unable to fix something, on Windows 8 and
Windows 10 systems it's also worth running the following command, also in

a Command Prompt window that's been opened with "Run as Adminstrator":
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth DISM should be able to fix
errors that SFC may not be able to fix. If you wish to be really
thorough, after running DISM, and presuming it reports that all has been
fixed, shutdown and restart your machine and run SFC one final time. The

SFC result should be clean.

Thank you for the info about the site for obtaining a wave file codex.

I have no idea as to the name of the codex. The only one I found

There's no description of what it is. I could see that it could be checked bvut I sure didn't know to download it, assuming is is what I need.

This is a very hard site to navigate.

I hope you can enlighten me as to how to find and download what I need.

Hi, David,

I run Win 7. Will your software work with 7?

If it won't, is there an alternate fix?

Joe, in case you have not already ran the SFC and DISM utilities I will share the following instructions, written by Brian Vogel. Running these utilities may possibly resolve your issues.

Fixing "Weird Issues" under Windows 8 or Windows 10 Using the System File Checker (SFC) and Deployment Imaging Servicing and Management (DISM)
If you are having "weird problems" with any Windows system, the first thing you should do is to run the System File Checker (SFC). Open a Command Prompt window using the "Run as Administrator" option. The easiest way to do this is to hit the Windows Key, immediately enter the text "Command Prompt" and getting the Command Prompt desktop app returned as the first item. Gain focus on it and bring up the context menu either via right click or hitting the menu/applications key [if your machine has one] or Shift+F10 if it does not then selecting "Run as administrator" from the context menu that appears. Once that elevated command prompt window is opened, enter:
SFC /scannow
When it's finished look at its output to see if it found any corrupt files and whether it was able to fix them.
If SFC reports that it was unable to fix something, on Windows 8 and Windows 10 systems it's also worth running the following command, also in a Command Prompt window that's been opened with "Run as Adminstrator":
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
DISM should be able to fix errors that SFC may not be able to fix. If you wish to be really thorough, after running DISM, and presuming it reports that all has been fixed, shutdown and restart your machine and run SFC one final time. The SFC result should be clean.

How can anybody complain to PayPal for them to take notice? They currently have no customer support of any kind. If you call their customer support phone number at 888-221-1161, as I have been trying to do since October, you will go through a series of menus until you finally get an automated message that tells you that there is no phone help available for your problem. And if you email them at service@paypal.com, you will receive an automated response suggesting that you post your question on their message center. But if you visit their message center and ask your question, you will receive an automated response suggesting articles of interest related to your problem but no direct answer. If anyone has figured out a way tocontact a live person (as opposed to a dead person) at PayPal, please let us know, because I have plenty to tell them.

Did you try different ways of activating the button? While the problem may
be something else, it may be as simple as that the button is not encoded
properly to be activated from the keyboard. I know links can be encoded in
that way, requiring a mouse. I wouldn't be surprised if buttons can be as
well. It is very important for people to describe what they have done and
just what problem is being encountered. I didn't even think of that as a
possibility until you presented the detailed information.

Its too late to try it now, but next time if the problem happens again, try
using whatever you use, the JAWS cursor, I think, to activate the button and
see what happens. I'm not optimistic, but you never know and many times,
there are controls I must use the simulated mouse on on this or that wweb

Then, my friend sent me a request for money. This I received in email,

I paid him for fixing this computer and all is well.

I only had trouble when initiating my purchase myself. I don't know

We want a simple interface with controls that work, thank you!

If my suggestion doesn't work, I don't have more except to try turning off the virtual pc cursor or browse mode when on the button and pressing the space bar and enter if the space bar doesn't work. But I doubt that will work..

That doesn't work. At least it did not for me about two weeks ago.

I'm not optimistic, but you never know and many times,
there are controls I must use the simulated mouse on on this or that wweb
page.

Hi all,

Holly, I explained carefully and fully that I had "tried all browsers
and all screen readers". I have been urging people to use FF or
Explorer for the past two weeks. So don't give me back my words.

I do have additional info. What I was trying to do was pay a friend
for some computer work he had done for me. I put his email in the edit
box and in some browsers I would get a button with his name and so on
and I would press the spacebar or enter, and nothing would happen. I
would try to activate the 'next' button and nothing happened.

Then, my friend sent me a request for money. This I received in email,
and it had a link. I activated the link and boom! I was good to go.
I paid him for fixing this computer and all is well.

I only had trouble when initiating my purchase myself. I don't know
what's with Paypal, but somebody needs to tell them that all their ads
and all their links and all their fall-dee-roll is *not* appreciated.
We want a simple interface with controls that work, thank you!

Re: Jaws Help, Please!

More discussion is needed on this question.

Not quite. Some dialogs don't have ok buttons and actions take immediate effect. Tabbing through a dialog won't cause any problems as you say, but it needs to be pointed out that if you change settings it may. Firefox is an example of a program where the options dialog has no ok button and changes take immediate effect. Probably Thunderbird is as well.

While a lot of dialogs have ok and cancel buttons, it appears to me that more may not than in the past. So tabbing around is fine. Changing settings is something you should be careful about until you have found out if the dialog has an ok and a cancel button.

And if you are looking around in a dialog. never use ok to close it if you don't intend to change any settings. Even if you are sure you haven't changed anything, use cancel or escape if escape works in the dialog. Most of the time, it does and is the same as cancel.

Hi all,

I think sometimes people tend to forget that you can't damage anything
in Windows dialogs unless you press an OK button, so therefore, tabbing
through a dialog does not harm anything at all.

Ann:

Sorry. Didn't read your complete post.

I haven't sent money in awhile, but when I did last, and was not having any luck putting in a phone number, someone on a list a long while back suggested to 'shift tab' on the 'next' link, and that would open the edit field to put in the recipient's name or number. Don't know if this will still work.

I agree with you that it is ridiculous that this problem exists though.
