As far as I know, you won't have to set up security if all you want to do is use the program Mivcrosoft provides with Windows. As I recall, its system Defender.
You may want to use something in addition such as Malware Bytes but System Defender is a highly rated program and you will be unlikely to need something else unless you want to use something like Malwaare Bytes.
You will have to go through some sort of procedure as has been discussed here when you first use the computer. Aside from what you are discussing, the only thing I can think of is to set up your computer to work with your WIFI, unless at home, you are going to connect your computer to your router by cable. I don't know enough about how you set up your computer to work with your WIFI to discuss it. When I had my modem set up here, the serviceman set up my laptop to work with it. I think AT&T does that for customers when a router is connected by them.

I know I will need to set up an email program, install my screen reader, set up security though. Just so I know what to expect when I bring home my Laptop. I know how to plug it in though! LOL! Janet

Re: Setting up A New Laptop Question Please.
Hi Joyce, Thank you so much for this, as this all makes sense. People kept telling me to just turn on Narrator and follow the prompts, but that didn't happen. What you are saying does make much more sense, there is more to setting up Windows for someone who has no speech than what many people are thinking. I also think this is a learning experience for all of us. Now I know what to tell Best Buy what I need them to do for me, as they are trying to help me as much as they can, and they don't know anything about Narrator, and I don't expect them to, as me as a blind person, I don't even know anything about Narrator,as I've never used it either. Thank you so much again.

See if Best Buy will get you through to at least the desktop without an Internet connection. Gene, Ok this makes sense. I do know the information from my Router to enter it, matter of fact, now that I finally thought about it, I can probably connect the Laptop to my Wi-FI just like I do when I connected my iPhone using my network password and security number. My Modem and Router is so old, and out dated as I've had it since 2009, and I probably need a new one soon. Do you know if I can install Jaws as I turn on the Laptop, or do I need to use Narrator? Last week when I tried to work with the other Laptop, Narrator wasn't any help at all.

No, but when you connect your laptop to the WIFI, you will have to enter information on your laptop to allow it to connect. The laptop will see your router but when you tell it to connect, it will ask for your security key. I'm not sure if it asks for anything else.

The site I looked at said that if you upgraded from Windows 7 or 8, you have a year’s license. You might want to check online for assistance in handling your problem. TerriLynne

Re: Setting up A New Laptop Question Please.
Hello Joyce,
I cannot tell you why this was the case for you, but I can assure everyone that, in most cases, you will not encounter any difficulties whatsoever launching Narrator, even at the setup screen, before WiFi. Narrator does not need network access to run.

My issue is, does this kind of license expire? Is there

No, but when you connect your laptop to the WIFI, you will have to enter information on your laptop to allow it to connect. The laptop will see your router but when you tell it to connect, it will ask for your security key. I'm not sure if it asks for anything else.

Re: Setting up A New Laptop Question Please.
Hi.
When I got my dell XPS in March of 2019 I was able to completely set it up without sighted assistance. This pc has both wired and wifi connectivity. I can't recall now if I had hard wired it to the internet before I began, or if I used wifi, but I had no issues starting narrator at the beginning. I hadn't heard that narrator won't run unless the computer is connected to the internet and I don't think that is the case.
I'm surprised someone hasn't done a demonstration on some podcast going through the steps of setting up a pc from scratch. I am considering picking up a new laptop for the specific purpose of recording it's set-up, but I won't have time to do it for a couple of weeks as it's back to work tomorrow and things are going to be busy for a while.Chris Judge

Re: my computer no longer plays wave files
You can probably play files within the program, even if you can't by pressing enter on them in the list outside of the program. In Windows media player, press control to open the open dialog. Shift tab once or twice, I'm don't know just how things are set up in Windows 10. You can get to a list of files and folders. If you back space you will move back from where you are toard the c drive. If you backspace more, you will be in a list and computer will be one of the items. Press enter Move to the drive, I think it is an external drive, and press enter. Move to where you want to be as usual on the drive. Try playing a file. After that, we can see if you can play files as you wish, perhaps selected files or an entire folder.

Joe, Everything I wrote was for Windows 7, not Windows 10 as you mentioned that in your first post. The ninite.com website removes all adware before you download it to your PC, that's why I suggested the K-lite codec pack, and yes it does work in Windows 7. But since it opened and played in the media player classic it's safe to assume you've got a working codec for .wav files installed. So, If you want to get rid of web advisor first then go to your control panel, then find the add and remove programs section and remove the McAffee Web Advisor. You will probably need to remove the entire McAfee suite if it's like all of the other McAfee products that I've dealt with in the past. I think the only other option, that is if you want to keep the McAfee suite, is to temporarily disable it when you need to accomplish a task that it's blocking and I think that's got to be done in whatever browser your using. I'm no fan of McAfee, so I'd get rid of it, but that's your choice.
As far as the file explorer issue, I'm not sure why your getting a different fly-out window on the open with screen, as arrowing down should give you a list of programs associated with .wav files followed by the choose another program option. Mike may have something there, so try arrowing to the right instead of down to see if the menu is horizontal. If that doesn't work, we're not sunk yet, Press the windows key on your keyboard and type "file associations" in the type in field and press the enter key. This should open the file associations window, where you can skim through the list until you find the .wav format and then choose the program you want to associate with this file type manually. Follow the instructions at the top of the page and see if that works for you. If you have any troubles, just post back here to the list.

Joe, You don't really have to know what the codec files are exactly, only that they are installed on your pc. Windows will pick and choose which ones it wants whenever it wants one. But, Here's something else you can try. Just in case your file associations got a little mixed up between audio programs, you can re-associate the .wav file type with your media player. I'm not sure if specific codecs are tied to file associations, but it's worth a try.
Press the windows key on your keyboard and tap the letter E key to open a file explorer window.
Navigate to a folder where you keep your .wav files.
Arrow up or down to select a .wav file.
Press the context key on your keyboard, shift key plus the F10 key if you use a laptop, to open the context window.
Arrow up or down until you come to the selection titled "Open with" and press the right-arrow key to open the fly-out window.
Even though media player is in this list, arrow down to the selection titled "choose another program" and press the enter key.
In this window, Tap the tab key until you get to a list of programs, In this list, arrow down to media player and then tap the tab key to jump down to a check box that says always use this program to open the associated file type.
Press the space bar to check the box and then tab to the OK button and press the enter key.
You'll be taken back to the file explorer where your .wav file should still be selected, so press the enter key on it and see if it opens in media player and starts to pley.
Good luck, Blaster

Until I do, a temp file shows up in my download folder for each one as though it is trying to download what I just finished successfully downloading.
Anyone else had this problem and any suggestions to a solution?
Thanks.

Yes, I know it can be done with desktops because I have done it more than once. Well, if I need to purchase a laptop with out an os, I send you a request.

Hmm, Colonel Monte, it is possible to purchase a BARE-BONE COMPUTER, whether that be a laptop or desktop, and then proceed to install an OS of one's choice. Of course, you're not likely going to find any such computer on the shelves of the likes of Bestbuy, Microcenter and others, but bare-bone computers with NO PREINSTALLED OS on them are out there for folks like me who take joy in tinkering with the impossible.

Re: Setting up A New Laptop Question Please.
Janet, be sure the Best
Buy store you visit has a functioning Geek Squaed desk so that
they can help you set up your new laptop. Because of pandemic
restrictions, some Best Buy stores may not have Geek Squad
ttechnicians on hand, so call the store you plan to visit first
and explain that you ar blind and will need help setting up the
new laptop you purchase from them. In my experience, sales staff
at Best Buy will only answer general questions about the
computers they sell, and will refer you to the Geek Squad desk
for technical assistance. All computers they sell come with
Windows 10 already installed, which includes Narrator andWindows
Security as part of the operating system . Depending on the
amount of help a Geek Squad technician provides, you may be
charged extra for this service. Just as a reminder, the
keystroke to toggle Narrator on and off is Control-Windows
key-Enter. In Windows 10, MS Edge is set as the default
browser, so you will need to download the Brave browser yourself
and set it as the default. Good luck.

I just think I will ask Best Buy if they will turn on Narrator, or I will turn it on to see if it will come on and stay on ! Isn't Narrator part of Windows? I'm wondering if Narrator is part of Windows, and if Narrator is not working correctly, is Windows fully installed. Just trying to figure this out.
There has to be some way I can set up the Laptop though. I don't know if it would do any good to call MS tech support though, and I have to admit if I have to do that, I dread that! LOL!

I would suggest, however, that you use either the Brave Browser for most of
your browsing or, if you want to use something else, use an ad blocker. U
Block Origin, spelling, has a very good reputation and my recollection is
that I didn't have to do any setup. I just installed it as an add-on or
plugin, or whatever the exact description is. Its not a question of whether
you want to block ads, though you may, but advertising on web sites may be
dangerous. Ads may be hacked and try to install malware. So in addition to
antimalware software, I consider either a browser that blocks advertising by
design, Brave does, or one on which you install a good add blocker to be
important for Internet security. Asto exactly how you install one on the
browser you will be using, the list can discuss that once you decide which
browser you will use as your main browser.

As far as I know, you won't have to set up security if all you want to do is
use the program Mivcrosoft provides with Windows. As I recall, its system
Defender.
You may want to use something in addition such as Malware Bytes but System
Defender is a highly rated program and you will be unlikely to need
something else unless you want to use something like Malwaare Bytes.
You will have to go through some sort of procedure as has been discussed
here when you first use the computer. Aside from what you are discussing,
the only thing I can think of is to set up your computer to work with your
WIFI, unless at home, you are going to connect your computer to your router
by cable. I don't know enough about how you set up your computer to work
with your WIFI to discuss it. When I had my modem set up here, the

customers when a router is connected by them.

First, you will need sided assistance to get through the first few steps because narrator does not turn on until you are connected to the Internet. See if Best Buy will get you through to at least the desktop without an Internet connection. Second, after you have gotten to the desktop and loaded your screen reader you will probably need to perform an update to the Windows operating system. I also don't know if the store would charge to do it.Narrator shouldn't automatically turn off.

Gene, Several people told me to use Narrator, and that is what I did, but everytime I turned Narrator on, it would completely turn right back off, and so that is why I say Narrator was no help to me at all. I don't have any idea why Narrator was like that though, as I have never worked with Narrator before.

The problem has been solved and I learned something out of it. I now know that when I delete an older version of Jaws that I have to reset a few things and I can do that. I'm very glad for this list because I learn things along the way and everyone is so knowledgeable. I would never delete shared components. I also don't think they have to do with settings but when that came up, something told me to not delete it and now I know never to do it. Thanks again for everything.

You lost one setting and you can very easily change it. That may be what happens in general and it may indeicate a bug or quirk but no extra care is indicated by this one experiendce.
