If you discuss the problems, you may get answers. I don't know what you mean by the screen seeming totally different. Browsing is browsing and when you are moving through a web page, doing so should be the same in terms of working with structures and how you move around the page.
If you are talking about something else, such as working with settings or menus, please clarify that you are referring to that.

Hi Heather,
Yes, they are there but, somehow they've
become unchecked. Try the following to get them back.
1. Type Control Panel in the search
box. 2. Press enter on Control Panel. 3. Click Power Options. 4.
Click Choose what the power buttons do. 5. Click Change settings that are
currently unavailable. You might have to tab or Shift + tab to get
there. 6. Tab past, Turn on fast startup, and you'll come to checkboxes
for Sleep Hibernate and Lock. Check the boxes you want to show.
Now tab to save changes, press enter and Alt + F4 to close.
Stay safe

Yeah they can be pricy but you know

then you may not need it. If you know that you might need
assistance in the future then you could get it. You can also
do third party insurers like square trade who offer cheaper

Best Buy did

wanted total Geek insurance, that would have cost another
$145, and that was only for one year, so if I wanted the total

this insurance could cost more than the Laptop! Smile! On

I don’t know the in and outs of best buys
policies Unfortunately but they do offer extended warranty on
open box items so that might be something to consider. The
amount you will save from buying an open item could be used to
buy the extended warranty.
I understand all about not needing the
latest and greatest. I just went over to my brothers house and
installed an SSD to his 2005 dell xps M1330 dual core laptop.
He was ready to throw it out cause it was very slow and he
only needs it to watch movies. Putting that SSD gave it
another life line with a clean of windows 10.

Hi Juan,
If it is an “open box” item at bestbuy,
would the usual 1 year warranty apply?
I purchased a used hp desktop from amazon
about 18 months ago.
It has a 6th
gen I 5 processor with 8 gig of ddr4 ram.
It’s a little slow
decompressing large, 30 gig files, and converting books
from text to speech, but that’s fine.
I’m not trying to
prevent a cataclysm with it.
If I get 2 or 3 years
use out of it, that’s fine.
99 per cent of us do not
need the latest and the greatest.
The one that I currently have is the Lenovo
legion but again it’s a gaming computer so might be over kill
for what you are looking for. Best buy has been doing that
more recently, selling open box items. They are not bad it
might just be some one opened it didn’t like it and returned
it. I am sure they have inspected it to make sure everything
is like new but you can always tell them that you want a brand
new one. That sales person doesn’t sound like a good one if he
didn’t tell you what you were buying. I got one of those when
I went in so I went to a different best buy and got a better
sales person. I almost bought an Asus gaming computer because
of the keyboard layout and everything being so nicely spaced
out but it did not have a number pad. It really depends on how
much you are looking to spend, if you want to save some money
you can get an i5 9th generation processer to save
some money and you would not notice the difference in speed
with the 10 generation. I would safely go back as far as a 6
generation i5 processer for what you are looking to do.

Hi Juan,
I did go in to
the Best Buy store, and I felt the keys on the Asus, and I
did like that as it also had a NumPad. I just didn’t know
it was what Best Buy calls out of the box, as the salesmen
never told me that. I also seen a HP Laptop I liked, and I
also seen a Dell Laptop I liked, but I now don’t know if all
those Laptops are out of the box, meaning someone could have
brought it back to the store as a trade in after they might
have had it for several months or even a year. Although, as
I am searching online, I have noticed the Asus Laptops now
have the Intell processor instead of the AMD Risen like the
one I bought. So, I don’t really know what all that means.
Can you tell me what kind of keyboard you have with those
keys, as that sounds like something I would like as well, or
is it the Lenovo one you currently have? I had a Lenovo a
few weeks ago, and the problem I had with the keys on the
keyboard, was the keys would stick down in the board when I
pressed them. The keys were to large for my fingers, and
they were to many different shapes, meaning some of them
were long, some of them were short.
Thank you for
all this.
Janet
A great method of finding the right laptop
for you is to go into a computer shop and have some hands on
with the laptop. I personally do not like the crammed
keyboards so I went in and found one that has great spacing. I
also wanted one with a number pad and this one had it. I also
would stay with any of the intel core I5 computers or AMD
Ryzen 5 and up for processors. 8 GB Ram and SSD of 250 GB or
higher.
Lenovo is my computer manufacture of choice
right now but that doesn’t mean there isn’t other good
computers in the dell, hp, lineups.

Hi these are like model names, think pad
and ideapad from Linovo as far as I know and vivobook from
Asus.
They are like series, and you can find
plenty of models in that series, just as for example, iPad pro
2018, 2020 etc.
Naturally 2020 model will have more updated
specs such as processor or ram etc.
Think pad for example 14inch laptop with
intel processer and several models coming either i5 or i7 and
all of them U which means low energy consumption.
So all of them laptop just different
companies and different models.
You have others similar to these, dell xps,
hp specter etc.
To know which one you should pick, first
decide for what you are getting the device for, if heavy
gaming or video editing etc, these are not so good, but for
productivity and portability, these are perfect.
And laptops which are for gaming and more
than 14-15 inch will be not so great with portability hence
they will be quite heavy.
Good luck.

I have two more things that you may want to try.
Do a Media Player classic reset, here's how to do that.
When Media Player classic is open
Press the ALT key and tap the letter V key to open the view option from the menu bar.
Arrow up to the selection titled Options and press the enter key.
In the options window press the letter M key to jump to the selection titled Micellaneous.
Tap the TAB key until you get to the Settings Management RESET button and then press the enter key to reset the default settings.
If that doesn't work, you may want to re-install Media Player classic, here's a link to that file.

Goldwave plays wavefiles and mp3 files but this software is intended for manipulating files. It cannot play all the files in a folder. I need that capability because my CD collection has been converted to wavefiles.
Goldwave does not play MIDI files. I do lots of sequencing so it is important to be able to play them. I have a collection of player piano roles

There's a solution to all of this, and I know it will be unlocked in time.

You can probably play files within the program, even if you can't by pressing enter on them in the list outside of the program. In Windows media player, press control to open the open dialog. Shift tab once or twice, I'm don't know just how things are set up in Windows 10. You can get to a list of files and folders. If you back space you will move back from where you are toard the c drive. If you backspace more, you will be in a list and computer will be one of the items. Press enter Move to the drive, I think it is an external drive, and press enter. Move to where you want to be as usual on the drive. Try playing a file. After that, we can see if you can play files as you wish, perhaps selected files or an entire folder.

----- Original Message ----- From: Blaster <blaster.nil8@...> To: main@techtalk.groups.io Date: Saturday, January 2, 2021 1:34 pm Subject: Re: [TechTalk] my computer no longer plays wave files
Joe, Everything I wrote was for Windows 7, not Windows 10 as you mentioned that in your first post. The ninite.com website removes all adware before you download it to your PC, that's why I suggested the K-lite codec pack, and yes it does work in Windows 7. But since it opened and played in the media player classic it's safe to assume you've got a working codec for .wav files installed. So, If you want to get rid of web advisor first then go to your control panel, then find the add and remove programs section and remove the McAffee Web Advisor. You will probably need to remove the entire McAfee suite if it's like all of the other McAfee products that I've dealt with in the past. I think the only other option, that is if you want to keep the McAfee suite, is to temporarily disable it when you need to accomplish a task that it's blocking and I think that's got to be done in whatever browser your using. I'm no fan of McAfee, so I'd get rid of it, but that's your choice.
As far as the file explorer issue, I'm not sure why your getting a different fly-out window on the open with screen, as arrowing down should give you a list of programs associated with .wav files followed by the choose another program option. Mike may have something there, so try arrowing to the right instead of down to see if the menu is horizontal. If that doesn't work, we're not sunk yet, Press the windows key on your keyboard and type "file associations" in the type in field and press the enter key. This should open the file associations window, where you can skim through the list until you find the .wav format and then choose the program you want to associate with this file type manually. Follow the instructions at the top of the page and see if that works for you. If you have any troubles, just post back here to the list.

Hi, Blaster,
I now can say that you are on the track. Here's what happens:
First, I cannot get to my wavefile folder with Explorer. It does not show me
everiy folder. It just shows Documents and Libraries, and control panel.
I therefore bypassed that step and went to the folder by running it.
I selected a wavefile.
I pressed the context menu key and found Open with.
I wasn't given a choice. It showed Media Classic, O.
I pressed O, and the highlighted selection began playing.
This is the only selection which played.
I guess this is because I could not follow your outline. I suspect that you
are getting this outline from Win 10 a nd not 7, but I don't really k now that.
I was able to download a Win 7 codecs pack, but other things came along, including Winzip Updater.
I can't uninstall it and other unasked for programs. There's Web Advisor, and it won't uninstall and it won't let me install anything else until Web Adviser is uninstalled, and looks like it won't ever want to disappear.
It reminds me of Congress where we get what we want along with other things
we would never care to have.
There you have it. I hope you or some others can figure out what I can do to
solve the wavefile problems and get rid of uninvited guests.

Joe, You don't really have to know what the codec files are exactly, only that they are installed on your pc. Windows will pick and choose which ones it wants whenever it wants one. But, Here's something else you can try. Just in case your file associations got a little mixed up between audio programs, you can re-associate the .wav file type with your media player. I'm not sure if specific codecs are tied
to file associations, but it's worth a try.
Press the windows key on your keyboard and tap the letter E key to open a file explorer window.
Navigate to a folder where you keep your .wav files.
Arrow up or down to select a .wav file.
Press the context key on your keyboard, shift key plus the F10 key if you use a laptop, to open the context window.
Arrow up or down until you come to the selection titled "Open with" and press the right-arrow key to open the fly-out window.
Even though media player is in this list, arrow down to the selection titled "choose another program" and press the enter key.
In this window, Tap the tab key until you get to a list of programs, In this list, arrow down to media player and then tap the tab key to jump down to a check box that says always use this program to open the associated file type.
Press the space bar to check the box and then tab to the OK button and press the enter key.
You'll be taken back to the file explorer where your .wav file should still be selected, so press the enter key on it and see if it opens in media player and starts to pley.
Good luck, Blaster

You may want to reinstall your codecs just in case the one Media player and VLC has become corrupted. You can get the K-lite codec pack from this website:

Hi, Gene,
Goldwave plays wavefiles and mp3 files but this software is intended for manipulating files. It cannot play all the files in a folder. I need that capability because my CD collection has been converted to

I'm no fan of McAfee,
so I'd get rid of it, but that's your choice.
If you have any troubles, just post
back here to the list.

Joe, You don't really have to know what the codec files are exactly, only that they are installed on your pc. Windows will pick and choose which ones it wants whenever it wants one. Re: my computer no longer plays wave files
But we are getting into procedures that we don't know if they are at all likely to work and may not be a good use of time. As I recall, the problem isn't just with one player. I believe that many players were tried. This thread has been going on, with intervals where it was inactive for perhaps aweek and some people discussing the problem may not know what came before.
Will the person with the problem please verify if I am right, that the problem isn't limited to one player but is a general problem?

Re: my computer no longer plays wave files
This list doesn't allow attachments. Most e-mail lists don't because of their potential dangers. You'll have to share it using some sort of sharing service, or send the message directly with the attachment to the intended recipient.
But you already know the problem, some music from another file is incorrectly a part of this one. All that someone who listens to the file can do is hear an example of what you are describing. It won't tell the person when or how the problem occurred. Under certain conditions, files can havde material from another file in that one. I haven't thought about the term for this for a long time, but as I recall, the term is cross linked files. If you do a search for something like correcting or repairing cross linked files, you may find useful information. If you have problems searching, let us know. I don't know if they can be repaired.

Hi, Gene,
Goldwave plays wavefiles and mp3 files but this software is intended for manipulating files. It cannot play all the files in a folder. I need that capability because my CD collection has been converted to wavefiles.
Goldwave does not play MIDI files. I do lots of sequencing so it is important to be able to play them. I have a collection of player piano roles transcribed as MIDI songs, so I want to be able to play them.

Thanks to Gene, I was very careful to select WAV. When I entered on that, it showed that Windows Media Player was the default player. I accepted this and closed that out.

I'm no fan of McAfee,
so I'd get rid of it, but that's your choice.
If you have any troubles, just post
back here to the list.

I'm not sure if specific codecs are tied to file associations, but it's worth a try.
Arrow up or down until you come to the selection titled "Open
with"
and press the right-arrow key to open the fly-out window.

Re: my computer no longer plays wave files
Joe, Media player is part of Windows 7 features so re-installing it is a little different from uninstalling or re-installing a regular program. Here are the steps to uninstall and re-install the media player.
Press the Windows key and type "windows features" into the search field; then press "Enter" to open the Windows Features window.
Tab around the screen until you find the link that says "turn windows features on or off" and then press the enter key.
Give it a moment to load the results and then arrow down the list until you find "Media player" or "Media features" and clear the checkbox by pressing the spacebar.
Tab to the bottom of the list and press the enter key on the "OK" button.
You need to restart your PC to make the changes take effect.
When you get back from the restart, go back around and follow these instructions again but this time check the checkbox to re-install the media player or media features.
