Re: can a blind person set up a computer without sighted help?? and with the problems I am having, would it help?

I've had a computer guy take a look at it and he
said that besides some HP proprietary software required to run the actual
computer , I don't have any bloat ware running on my system. he is
not familiar with screen readers but he said that jaws might be the
cause of the slow down. And yes, I to am trying to learn windows 10 and
also jaws as I am a former window eyes user. I still run a laptop
with xp and window eyes and it is a heck of a lot faster than my
"new" laptop with jaws and win 10 on it. I don't do any
emailing or shopping on it, but I like the smoothness and the response and speed
of the window eyes and xp experience on the older computer.
Shrug. Needless to say, a lot of the internet
and what not is cut off from me because of the xp machine not being able to load
most websites but hey, I prefer getting things typed out on my xp
wordpad rather than typing a line of text on the win 10 comptuer and then
having to wait for either jaws or win 10 to catch up and actually
speak the line I just typed.

I think the proper name of the program talked about
is the Mail app in Windows 10, which is neither Windows Mail or Windows
Live Mail.

Do you want Ofice because you want it or just for Outlook? You can use the Windows mail app but it is a very limited program and a lot of people don't like it. How well it would meet your needs, I don't know. As I recall from discussions I've seen, you can't create message rules. Why not use either Thunderbird or Windows Live Mail? They are both free.

You don't have to do anything except talk with someone by phone or fill out whatever application is provided on the site. You don't have to submit proof of blindness.

The organization that makes low cost computers available to any blind person, regardless of income, is called Computers for the Blind. They are located in Garland, TX. They refurbish commercial grade computers and install a one-year license for JAWS 2021, so it is ready to go and come up speaking right out of the box. All you have to do is set it up. You can order a desktop for $130 which comes with a 20 inch flat panel monitor, full size keyboard, optical mouse,, speakers and all connecting cables. A laptop costs slightly more, and all computers come with Windows 10 64 bit Pro as well as a number of other blind-friendly programs already installed. All computers are covered by a one-year warranty. For additional cost, you can upgrade to an SSD and add additional RAM. This is a great deal, because a one-year license for JAWS by itself would cost $90. I am using the Windows 7 HP desktop I ordered from them a few years ago and it has served me well. I have a Windows 10 desktop in reserve that I also ordered from them. For more infornation, call them at 214-340-6328 or visit their web site:

Re: if any of you are using opendrive.com, I would like to know your opinion of it.

I think open Drive is easy to use as well. Plus, I think there are fewer restrictions on what kinds of files people can share. For instance, I know that some people and groups share large numbers of music and other media files through this platform and they can do so without any restrictions other than the usual disclaimer about sharing anything that’s copyrighted. Hi Keith, I just wonder if completely unsubscribing with the old email, and resubscribing with the new email address, if that might make a difference. I don’t use FaceBook though.

I've had a similar problem with removing my facebook's log in email. I have added a new email address that is the one I use for regular email to my account, but I cannot get facebook to switch the new email as my log in email. I've chekced the help section on facebook but the steps do not seem to work, at least for a blind person. Something about "when the menu opens select master email check box" . Apparrently it's a virtual menu that jaws users cannot access.

Re: can a blind person set up a computer without sighted help?? and with the problems I am having, would it help?
Janet
Hi Keith, I’m not very familiar with Windows 10, but I’m learning! LOL! As far as your pc running that slow, I would definitely check to see what apps might be running in the background. Slow computers are often caused by too many programs running simultaneously, taking up processing power and reducing the PC's performance. That’s just my personal opinion though. I don’t know if you are running a Desktop or Laptop like I am or not, but even though, I’ve had my new Laptop barely 3 weeks, and I haven’t worked on it much this past week, my Laptop appears to be much slower than my old Windows 7, and I’ve had Windows 7 since 2012. Although, I’m sure my slowness of my new Laptop is caused by a lot of bloatware that came with Windows 10 as well as the updates, I know I need to get rid of, or at least I hope that’s all it is! Smile! As far as using the Reset option, from my understanding, the reset feature is a repair tool in Windows 10. You can use that, and you can choose what you want to keep, and after the repair, that will reinstall a fresh copy of Windows 10. I hope this helps a little, as I just can’t stand a sluggish pc, I would rather throw it out the Window! Smile!

does this resetting reinstall windows completely, (aka download a new copy of windows from the Microsoft servers and install it on your system? I upgraded from windows 8 to windows 10 when MS was offering the free update and my system is is as slow as heck. I have the proper amount of ram and cpu speed on my laptop to handle windows 10 and jaws, but the computer is very "laggy" and simple things like opening a folder can take up to 2 minutes to complete and allow access to the files in the folder. opening programs is the same way, even functions taht are part of windows are slow to open and respond.
thanks 3 Keith

Open Drive is really easy to use! It is easy for others to download files that you share to Others! I would strongly suggest Open Drive to anyone! You can upload 5 gigs for free!
