Brave Is Launching a Privacy-Focused Search Engine to Compete With Google

ANDREW HEINZMAN

MAR 4, 2021, 11:27 AM EST | 1 min read

The Brave logo with some art assets related to its search engine.

Brave

secured your web activity, and now it wants to secure your search results. The underdog browser, which grew to over

26 million

users last year, is gearing up to launch

Brave Search,

a "

private

alternative to Google Search" without any trackers or "algorithmic bias." Brave Search will take on the big dogs, including

DuckDuckGo,

the most popular private search engine.

Of course, Brave isn't building its search engine from scratch-the company will instead base Brave Search on

Tailcat,

a privacy-focused search engine from the crew

at Cliqz

a now-bankrupt fork of Mozilla's European division. Brave aquired the Tailcat search engine in March 2021 and

suggests

that it's a suitable foundation for Brave Search thanks to its privacy-focused code.

Unsurprisingly, the Brave blog post announcing Brave Search includes a list of tenets. You can read the full manifesto on

Brave's blog,

or skim this quick summary:

list of 7 items

1. Privacy : Brave Search doesn't track users.

2. User-First : Brave Search focuses on users, not advertisers.

3. Ad-Free  Option : Users can pay for ad-free search results.

4. Anonymized Crawling : Big tech companies spend billions to "crawl" websites and generate search results. Brave Search relies on anonymous community

contributions instead.

5. Anti-Bias : Brave Search doesn't use algorithms to create biased search results or censor websites.

6. It's Fast : Brave Search connects to the browser and offers instant results as you type.

7. Open Engine : Anyone can use Brave Search to develop their own search engine.

It's worth mentioning that Brave Search does use algorithms, but it provides filters (or "

Goggles

") to let you modify how the algorithm ranks content. These filters could provide additional transparency for Brave Search, or help early-adopters refine

their search results on the fly.

Want to try Brave Search? Brave hasn't clarified when its search engine will go live, but you can sign up for the

waitlist

today for early access. You could also try

DuckDuckGo,

another privacy-oriented search engine.

Re: iCloud Account and Setting It Up With IMAP

Hi All,

Okay, I completed the necessary steps, Since 2017, you need to enable two-step authentication for your iCloud account and create an application-specific password
to use with IMAP, but I still can't get connected.  So, I'm going to give Apple accessibility a call and see if they can get it figured out.  The website didn't say that the iCloud app for Windows PC was necessary, but maybe that's the missing ingredient.

Stay safe and take care.  Mike.

Hi All,

I'm running an SE 2020 iPhone with iOS14.4.  I finally got an iCloud email account established but, I would like to be able to access it using an IMAP account from my Windows PC's and my email client.

From my various searches I found I need to do the following:
Since 2017, you need to enable two-step authentication for your iCloud account and create an application-specific password
 to use with IMAP.

I do have 2-step authentication enabled on my iPhone but, do I need to do this with my iCloud email account as well?

Also, how do I go about creating an application-specific password for an IMAP account and my email client?
All help is greatly appreciated. Thanks much.

Stay safe and take care.  Mike.

Hi all,
Can someone please remind me how to change my dictionary/spellcheck language? I
know I tried to do it before, but it didn't work, and now that I installed the

will stay. Using Office 365, the latest Jaws and Windows 10. Thanks Madison

Btw this is with an online subscription, the same thing doesn't happen between the xm receiver in the car and my echo.

filter these messages: control plus shift plus k message in thunderbird

Troy Burnham

Hi all,

When tabbing into my thunderbird folders, between the folder list and the folder itself there's an area that says filter these messages: control plus shift plus k. How do I keep that from showing? I've done it before and I think it's in the menus somewhere but I can't find it.

Thanks.

Jarte will only enter screen reader mode if a recognized screen reader is running. Jarte's title bar will display the phrase "screen reader mode" when
Jarte is running in screen reader mode.

If Jarte does not recognize your screen reader program then you can force Jarte to switch to screen reader mode by copying the phrase "enable screen reader
mode" to the Windows clipboard before starting Jarte. This only needs to be done one time.

Note to JAWS users: Jarte is currently unable to recognize the presence of the JAWS screen reader. If you are using JAWS then you will need to use the
method described in the preceeding paragraph to force Jarte into screen reader mode.

If Jarte is running in screen reader mode, but it should not be, then you can turn off screen reader mode by copying the phrase "disable screen reader
mode" to the Windows clipboard and then restarting Jarte. This only needs to be done one time.
