Laptop or Pc, I keep each one for well over ten years! Pc's I build myself;
I grabbed a Sony Vaio laptop nearly 12 years ago now, the silly toy is still
kicking and refusing to die> Has never given me problems of any kind. It
was a refurbished toy when I grabbed it; it cost me $349.99 as opposed to
$899.99 brand-new.

I wouldn't assume that is needed or proper. it sounds as though you are talking about a sound card with its own preamp that connects directly to the turntable. If you are connecting the sound card to a stereo using the line out connectors or connecting the soundcard to a preamp and the turntable is already connected to the preamp, the sound is already properly equalized.

Get a sound card with RIAA levels for vinyl while you're at it.

Thank you Gene. It would be a crying shame if the second jack on my laptop
only functions as a microphone jack, especially since this particular HP
laptop has really decent working internal mics when the computer's fan isn't
running. I'm trying to digitize a bunch of vinyl, so I probably would do
myself a favor by switching over to a better sound card.

the problem may be that the jack is not for both, but just a microphone
jack. I haven't had a computer with such a combination. Since you can find
nothing, even when a source is connected, maybe that means the jack is just
for a microphone. You may get help from someone with such a combination,
but it may be that you will have to purchase a USB external sound card with
a line-in jack.

I have a laptop with a stereo microphone array and 2 jacks on the side; one
for headphones and one apparently for line-in/external microphone. I find
that the line-in option is missing from my input devices under sound
settings, even after plugging in the audio source that I want to record with

my computer. I googled the problem, and the instructions that I found say
to right-click on speakers in the system tray or sound on the taskbar, go to

sound settings and under the record tab, enable line in. I am unable to
find what they are talking about. Anyone know a better method for enabling
line-in on my laptop?

Hi. Heard about this more simple media player and rss reader from http://www.nathantech.net on accessible world the other day. Also was listening to talking computers  and some one had a demo of pandoma e-mail client. For windows 10. So maybe give that a try.

Hi. In the list of apps, is the feedback hub. If you have a Microsoft account, can login and report issues. Which Microsoft tech and engineers do  and other users as well. Give that a try. Well reset did work for me the last time I had a hardware or software issue. Tried all the grouble shooters and tried a system restore, then tried a restore from my backup on my Samsung external drive, did not work. So a reset, and also there’s an option to do a cloud download which will install windows from the cloud. Not sure if that’s quicker or takes longer.

Never tried that option.

Thanks.

Marvin.

Ps: if he is going to get a new laptop or desktop. Just put up with the issues if he does not want to do a reset. If he does want to reset this pc. Under settings, update and security, recovery, then click this reset this button.

And make sure all info is backed up to a usb thumdrive, and other devices.

Thanks.

Also, it sounds as though you don't have your laptop
connected to a power supply when you update. That's a bad
idea. If an update takes a long time, you may have enough
battery capacity for it, but as your battery loses capacity
over time, you will be increasingly likely to run out of

And was using vm ware workstation and vm ware work station player doing a network course from http://www.upskilled.edu.au and http://upskilled.instructure.com which doing a diploma of networking. My nehew and his family was staying with us last time I did this last June or July or august. Then once he able to reset, then able to bring up narrator. And yes have used the recovery and reset this pc. And got narrator as well a few years back.

Yes, and now got every thing backed up on this assus laptop. About every 5 to 6 or 7 years will then purchase a new laptop. My Toshiba satellite a 300 lasted 6 years, then my Toshiba satellite pro c-50 a about 5 years. A sighted programming friend gave it to him, he put in a new sdd, installed windows and set it up for his mom.

Thanks.

Ps: have a ssd which is very quick.

Do have 8 gb slots free, have 8 gb so if I do need it in the future. Next laptop will ask for 16 gb ram, a 1 tb or 2 tb ssd drive.

HI Jim,
Another story! Smile! Well, I turned on my Win 10 today, and sure enough,
here comes more updates. Ok, I once again attempt to download, and get the
message error files missing from previous update you can't update. Ok, here
I go again with this .... again. So I wait just a couple minutes thinking
what in the hell am I going to do with this. Ok, once again, I get the
message asking me if I want to try the update again, and I agree to do so,
so the .... started downloading, and this time it took close to an hour, and
then it restarted on it's own, although, it would always say I need to
restart to complete the download, but not this time. Well, now JAWS has a
speech impediment once again. Jim, I am seriously thinking your problem is
definitely coming from an update you must have tried to update before, and
as I said, this is common with Windows. Some people never have this
problem, and some people do. I also think MS knows this, but they aren't
going to tell you one of their updates corrupted your system. I do know for
a fact this can and has happened, but I never had this to happen to me
though, so I really never paid close attention to how Windows can really
effect someone's PC. Maybe this answers our question why MS keeps saying
there isn't anything they can do. I also heard when MS sends out updates,
Laptops are the last ones to get them, as well as they send updates to
people who haven't had previous problems in downloading their updates. I'm
going to research this further as I want to know more about this. As far as
my Win 10, I'm going to have to go back to the Geek squad, because I want
someone to tell me exactly what is this problem. There are some options
that you could do if you really wanted to, but it does involve quite a bit,
and I don't know if you would want to go through all that, I know I sure
wouldn't. I definitely do believe a reset would make a big difference, but
then again, there is know guarantee though, and you just might end up with
no PC.

Jim,
Ok, it looks like I can now send as well as reply to the list.
Jim I'm going to share a story with you about what happened to me with my
Windows 10 Laptop. Just last Friday I turned on my Win 10 after not having
it turned on well over a week, the first thing I did after turning it on,
was to check for updates. Well, I did have some updates, and yes I did
update, and it took at least 2 hours to complete the update, so I restarted
the PC, and it came back up with a message saying I had an update for JAWS.
Ok, now I updated JAWS, and once again restarted the PC. Needless to say my
nightmare was about to begin. My PC was a total mess, meaning I couldn't do
anything with it even though, I tried working on it all day Friday and half
the day Saturday, as well as working to get JAWS to speak so I could
understand what he was saying. I finally lost my patience, and turned that
.... thing off. I couldn't understand JAWS at all, and the PC was so slow I
couldn't do anything with it. I felt like just throwing the PC out the
window, and believe me I came very close to doing that, but instead, I just
turned it off, and I didn't bother with it until this last Tuesday. Ok now,
Tuesday I turned it on to see if I could do anything with it, but again, I
couldn't, so I checked for updates, and once again, here comes more updates,
and yes I updated it, and I couldn't believe that update took exactly 4
hours to update, and sometimes JAWS would speak the percentage of the
update, and then JAWS would just get tired, and he would stop speaking, so I
didn't know what was going on, and being as curious as I am, I would press
the insert key plus the letter t for the title bar just so I would hear what
JAWS has to say, and then he would speak the percentage for awhile, and he
would once again stop, but my point is the update kept updating, in which
was fine for me, but I was ready to plug in my Laptop charger as I was
concerned the Laptop batteries would just die, but finally the .... finished
updating, and I had to restart so the PC could finish the complete update.
Well, needless to say, that really blew me away, as I never seen an update
take a total of 4 hours, in which that tells me something was most
definitely wrong with the previous update, and the PC was repairing the
corrupted update, and then downloaded the clean update. I've been working
with desktop computers as well as with JAWS for 30 years, and I've never
came across this. This was a first one for me. Ok now, today I turned on
my Win 10 again, and once again I checked for updates. Well now, more
updates to download, as I attempted to download the update, I got a message
saying there is an error and I'm missing some files, and I can't update, I
had no idea what was going on now, so I press the ok button to accept the
error message, and I waited for a few minutes, and I attempted the updates
again, and this time for what ever reason the damn thing finally downloaded
the update, and once again restarted the Laptop, and I waited for close to
an hour, and I just shut it off, and so far, it is working fine! So as you
can see Jim there are several different reasons things like this happen, but
I have no idea why. The reasons why I asked you the questions I asked you
earlier was to be for sure when you attempted to download an update your
updates could have easily gotten corrupted, and if you weren't paying close
attention, you might have not noticed that. It's really strainge because
earlier I was thinking that is what happened to your PC, and believe it or
not, that samething is what happened to me just today. Smile! These things
can and do often happen with Win updates. -----Original Message-----

Janet, Microsoft tried to put on the latest version of windows, which is
2032 I think. Anyway, the installation failed, so I still have windows 1909
on this computer. So I wonder if I tried to install a clean install of
windows, if the same thing would happen, and the installation would fail.
What do you think? How would you go about installing a clean version of
windows? The other day when I talked to the lady from Hellen Keller
foundation, she was reluctant to let me have a copy of my office program,
so I would have to find it somewhere, unless there is a way to back up the
one I have. Any comments here are appreciated. Jim

Hi Gene,
I can't understand why MS Disability didn't perform a reset themselves, or
did they. I haven't heard anything about what MS said as to why they can't
do anything, or what did they check, what did they find. The only times
I've had any problems downloading something, is because of my virus
protection, or even just because of my firewall settings, in which I just
turned them off, and tried the download again, and sure enough the download
went through, and I quickly turned on my firewall as well as my virus
protection. Although, I would think MS looked at all that.
Janet .

Why not use reset? it saves work and if it doesn't work you can always
reinstall from scratch. But why not try this method of having a completely
clean copy of Windows first?

Then again is it worth doing any of this if you are going to get a new
computer in three months? Use other programs for the ones you can't use now

and we still ddon't know if you can get security updates for the version of
Windows you are running.

When you get the new computer, you may want to experiment with the old one
but is it worth the inconvenience now?

I still sayl, as I have from the outset, install Windows 10 from scratch.
That means initializing the disk. Of course you'll want to back everything
up frirst, which maybe by now is no longer possible, only you would know
this.

Here is some information I just came across, and I copied and pasted below.

* How big is the download of Windows 10 20H2? If you're upgrading from
version 2004, the package is only a few megabytes. The Windows 10 20H2 ISO
file
is 4.9GB, and around the same using the Media Creation Tool or Update
Assistant.
* Does the Windows 10 20H2 requires reinstallation? No, if you're updating
from version 2004, reinstallation isn't required. If you use the Media
Creation
Tool, Update Assistant, or you're upgrading an older release, then full
reinstallation is required.
* How can I download Windows 10 20H2? When it becomes available, you'll be
able to download October 2020 Update from Windows Update as a quick update
on version 2004, or full feature update install for older versions.
Microsoft will also be making available the Media Creation Tool, Update
Assistant,
and ISO file to upgrade or perform a clean installation.

Carolyn,
All those whistles and Bells that come with Outlook, drives me crazy! I don't need all that, and I don't want all that.

You don't need to get rid of Outlook. I don't think you should until you try other programs and decide you don't want it. But you may want to have one or two other programs on your machine for evaluation.

You may or may not like other e-mail programs but if you just use Outlook for e-mail and not for its business features, you can find other programs that do what you want. You would have to have the inconvenience of learning something about the other programs, but much of what you do will be the same or very similar. Control r is usually reply. Control f, is usually forward. Control n is usually new.

I have it with Gmail and with Windstream - both. It is absolutely totally
annoying, and I do think it is an outlook problem. The reason I think that
is because of having a Gmail box and a Windstream mailbox.

Janet, No, I’m using gmail. Even though I receive the unable to deliver
email, I see my email to the group show up in my email inbox. So I don’t do
anything to get my emails to post to the group. I haven’t pointed this out
to others before now, because I figured it was just a bug with the gmail
mail server. I’m not saying this is what you are experiencing. Just pointing
out that this is a possibility. I saw an earlier email from you, in which
you replied to Jim & a test email that you sent requesting no replies to
your test email.

Donna

HI Donna,
Are you using MS Outlook? If you ignore the message, how do you finally
get your messages to go through? I got this message from MS Outlook.
This is the first time I had this to happen with this list.

Gene,
I did get the portable Thunderbird from you some months ago, and I'm more than willing to set it up, but I tried several times to download the add ons, and I just get no results meaning Thunderbird just won't allow me to download the add ons. Do you remember some months ago, when Brian I forget his last name was on the list, and he got very insulting with me, and as far as I know that is why he unsubscribed from this list. Although, now that I think of it, I should try Thunderbird on my Win 10, but right now Win 10 is all messed up, and I just don't have the patience right now to deal with Win 10. I need a break from Win 10, as well as with JAWS 2021.

I don't recall the problems you had with add-ons. If you try Thunderbird, I
strongly recommend the portable version, not the installed version. You may
