Re: Braille Displays

Victor

Yes, a very well written post. I agree as well. I do not need a braille display/notetaker that has its own operating system as I can connect it to a smart mobile device and use it that way. I need a smart phone anyway just to do the things I need to do like send and receive phone calls. I would much rather have a braille display that I can connect to such a device and not just be a standalone device.

The line of orbit braille displays sounds promising because of their lower price. However, I don’t think I would like the rattling sounds either as I record and edit audio. I would not like a braille display that rattles in the background while I am recording that audio. I currently own the first generation focus 40 braille display from Freedom Scientific. It’s a good device and it meets my needs. The only thing I dislike is it’s keyboard. I wish I had one of the more recent generations of the focus 40 braille display because their keyboards are more pleasant to use. Plus, I like the fact that the more recent generations of the focus braille display act as a standalone notetaking device without the operating system. When necessary, I can connect it to my iPhone. That’s what I need. I can also connect it to a computer when necessary as well. Besides, as an iOS user, there are no braille note takers that use the iOS operating system. At least not as far as I know.

Just my thoughts,

Victor

This device is absolutely not for me. Neither was the BrailleNote, or any
of the other devices of this kind on the market. I do appreciate a single
device with a Braille display, ease of use, where things tend to just work,
but I also appreciate not paying for a device that is antiquated before it
was ever released in terms of software and security updates and hardware. I
also refuse to be in a position to need to pay for a new device with the
same or greater cost in a few years because this device stops getting
updates, is even more antiquated than it is today, etc. For me, a display
like the orbit, along with an Android phone or iPhone with much better
hardware and software support is a much better use of my money, and is a
much cheaper proposition. I can make use of many apps on the Play Store, I
can still accomplish what I wish to accomplish with my laptop or with my
phone, I can still read Braille when I wish to do so, and I don't need to
pay the price for the Braille Sense, or any of these other blindness
note-taking devices.

It is important that everyone considers their own needs, the use that they
will put a device to, what they value out of a device, and their budgets
before making such a purchase.

Gene,
Come on now! We all have to eventually update programs in order for them to work smoothly. One can only get so much out of a program when it is not supported. Oh sure, one can still use it, but the program will run much more smoothly when it receives updates. I myself use Outlook 2010, and it is barely hanging on.

Why do you say it won't work efficiently? Something being out of support has nothing to do with how well it works unless conditions change over time such as a browser that is years old not being able to work with new Internet code.

It may be that if something is out of support long enough, it won't work properly in a new version of Windows, but a lot of old programs still work well.

AS I read the info below, office 2013 will receive security updates til April 2013.

Here is some info on windows products.; see info below or go to;

https://www.ghacks.net/2019/08/16/how-long-will-microsoft-continue-to-support-desktop-versions-of-office/
The following table lists recent desktop Office products and end of mainstream and extended support for each of the products.

Mainstream Support
Extended Support

Office 2010
no longer supported
October 13, 2020
Office 2013

April 11, 2023
Office 2016
October 13, 2020
October 14, 2025
Office 2019
October 10, 2023
October 14, 2025
As you can see, Office 2010 support ends next year; nine months after support for Windows 7 ends. 2020 will be a major year for many users and organizations as support for two core Microsoft products runs out.
The products won't just stop working though but Microsoft won't release security updates for them anymore. Microsoft did make a few exceptions in the past when it released security updates for products that it did not support anymore officially.
Support for the three remaining Office desktop products runs out in 2023 or 2025. Windows 8.1 support ends in 2023 and so does support for Office 2013. That leaves Office 2016 and 2019, and Windows 10 as the only desktop products provided that Microsoft does not release a new version of Windows (which it said it would not do claiming that Windows 10 was the last version).

HI Jim,

Yes, the Windows Mail App is what comes with Windows 10.  I myself am getting used to it.  Windows Mail App is quite basic, and what I mean by that is you can send messages, you can reply, you can forward, you can receive messages.  There is what Windows calls the People App, in which that is really the contact list.  I like this because it is just  a basic email program, as that is all I want.  I have on my iPhone Outlook for iOS, and the Windows Mail App is very similar to that, in which I like.

Howdy Monte,

Did you accidentally mute your phone?  The little switch above the side volume buttons should be pushed towards the front of the phone.  If the screen is unlocked the phone will report the switches status when moving it.

Stay safe and take care.  Mike.

533 Million Facebook Users Stolen by Hackers

Janet

Hello All,
I just came across this article, and thought some might be interested in reding, so I copied and pasted below.

533 Million Facebook Users Stolen by Hackers
Personal Data of 533 Million Facebook Users Stolen by Hackers
JOSH HENDRICKSON
@canterrain
APR 5, 2021, 11:17 AM EDT | 1 min read
A Facebook privacy page with a magnifying glass over the word privacy.
If you're on Facebook (and who isn't?), you may want to consider locking down all your accounts. A security researcher discovered the personal data of
533 million Facebook users
leaked online in a hacker forum. The data includes phone numbers, names, birthdates, emails, and more.
The data in question first leaked back in January, but at the time, hackers had to pay for it through a Telegram bot. That limited the spread somewhat
between the cost and the method to retrieve it. But over the weekend,
security researcher Alon Gal
discovered the data posted on a hacker forum for free.
All 533,000,000 Facebook records were just leaked for free.
This means that if you have a Facebook account, it is extremely likely the phone number used for the account was leaked.
I have yet to see Facebook acknowledging this absolute negligence of your data.

Alon Gal (Under the Breach)
In early 2020 a vulnerability that enabled seeing the phone number linked to every Facebook account was exploited, creating a database containing the information
533m users across all countries.
It was severely under-reported and today the database became much more worrisome 1/2
6:52 AM · Apr 3, 2021
The breach contains information on users across 106 countries, including 32 million US users and 11 million UK users. Troy Hunt, of
haveibeenpwned,
already has a copy of the data, and in his analysis,
few records
(about 0.5%) contain email addresses. But far more contain phone numbers, birthdates, and other personally identifying information. Everything you might
need to pull off a sim swapping attack or take over an account.

@troyhunt

Another general observation on this incident: I'm seeing *extensive* sharing of the data, both the entire corpus of countries and individual country files.
Not just in hacking circles, but very broadly on social media too. This data is everywhere already.
Email parsing now done, found 2,529,621 unique addresses across the 108 files. Call it about 0.5% of all records having an email address.
8:29 PM · Apr 3, 2021
For his part, Hunt is considering adding a
new field
to
haveibeenpwned.com
for phone numbers. Currently, you can only check your data against email addresses for breaches, but in this case, that's not very useful. But adding
a phone number field comes with risks, so Hunt is still deciding as of this publication.
In a statement to
Bleeping Computer,
Facebook stated that hackers stole the data using a vulnerability the company patched in late 2019. That means the data stolen is nearly two years old,
and if you've changed your email address or phone numbers since then, what the hackers have is out of date. But other data doesn't change of course, (like
birthdates), and people usually keep phone numbers and emails for many years, so the age of the data is of little comfort.
For its part, Facebook doesn't seem to be notifying affected users, which would be a helpful move. If you want to determine if you're part of the leak,
you can start with
haveibeenpwned.
For now, that's an email-only option, but hopefully, Hunt does add a phone number field in the future.
Bleeping Computer
article end

Yeah but that has nothing  to do with his problem.

I’ve had this happen on an iPod too.

Only f fix was to reboot the device.

The  mic deactivates sometimes for some reason.

You can set it up on Windows 7, but if you are going online, it is risky to stay with Windows 7, since Microsoft no longer supports Windows 7.

Hi group

Can an orbit reader connect to a windows 7 desktop via USB?

I am trying to connect the device, but its not working

Or do I have to install win 10

If that is done, I mean installing win 10, how to set it up to work with NVDA

Thanks

Hi all,

Can anybody recommend a set of computer speakers that has the volume
knob on one of the speakers? I recently bought a set of speakers but
they have an inline volume and I'd rather the volume be on one of the
speakers to make it easier to reach.

I'd also like to get them from amazon because I have a gift card I need
to use.

Thanks.

I have a set of bose I got from amazon. I think they are the sound companion 2. They just have one nob on the right speaker and sound great.
