Re: T-Bird & Search
Gene
I have no idea if this will do what you want but press alt and type t for
tools.
Up arrow to options and press enter.
Tab to an item that says something like, when the program runs, show the
start page in the message area. If it is checked, uncheck it with the
space bar.
Whether the search is showing or not, it evidently makes no difference that
means anything. When the program runs, you aren’t in the message list or
in the folders tree view and you have to do something to move there. there
are different ways to move to what you want. I press f6 twice to get to
the message list. the first press gets me to the folders treeview, the
second push gets me to the message list.
I can also shift tab once to get to the message list. I use f6 just
because that is the first way I started moving to the message list and it had
become a bit of a habit before I experimented. I also like using f6
because it is such a common way of moving from one part of the same window to
another part.

Re: amazon search
Gene
On reasonably sophisticated sites, searches should be sophisticated enough
not to need qquotes in most cases. I didn’t use quotes when I tried
searching for what is specified on the site and the search worked as I thought
it probably would, showing results for what I wrote without usingg quotes.
What might the problem be? I’m not sure but the first thing I would
do would be to try another browser in case something, who knows what, went wrong
with this one, addware, some sort of other malware that shows lots of results
that aren’t wanted, possibly some thing else I don’t know about.
But places like Amazon and Google are consumer products and design search
to work well when used by people who know almost nothing about how to
search. This ability has been an area of concentration and improvement
over a good while and is essential for such consumer products.

Re: thunder bird not accessible
Ann Parsons
Morning all,
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
Heather, this message is not helpful. All it does is bring up a bunch of questions. Now, I will preface this here message by stating that I don't use Thunderbird. However, the questions apply whenever the general catch term "inaccessible" is used. Here are the questions. First, what is the program doing or not doing which makes it unusable for you? Next, What is it that you want to do which you cannot do now? Third, what error messages or status messages are you getting? What is the computer telling you? Finally, have you looked in the current documentation? Have the commands changed? Have the ways to access the aspects of the program changed? Have you read the "What's New?" text file? Before we can help with the so-called inaccessibility problem, these questions need to be answered. I say so-called because the line between inaccessibility and user ignorance is very thin. This is particularly true of a program which has been a model for accessibility for years and is used by thousands of people who are blind or visually impaired. There's absolutely nothing wrong with ignorance because it can be remedied with knowledge. It is only deliberately remaining ignorant that is the problem. Any Thunderbird users online? Can you all help Heather? I suspect that the ways to input commands or to get at menus have changed. I think once the new command set is known, all will be well. Now, I could be wrong. Software companies have, in the past, made huge bloopers which have actually made their software inaccessible, and this is a possibility, but it's a remote one. If the commands have changed, maybe Accessible World or BITS or Mystic Access may want to think about a tutorial or presentation. That would solve the problem handily. Ann P. Original message:

I doubt you did anything. It may be that the update itself didn’t go
properly. It usually doesn’t happen but things go wrong sometimes with all
sorts of things. I assume you saw my messages and will keep a copy of the

Whatever you do, after you solve the problem, back up the portable program. That’s one of the important reasons to use the portable version. If anything becomes corrupted, you don’t have to do any trouble shooting. Just delete the program and copy the folder from the backup location to where you have the folder you are working in now.
As far as how to remove a portable program, it isn’t installed. Just delete the folder and you will have deleted the program.
There is an installer but it doesn’t install the program. It places it on your machine, that is, it creates the folders and places the files in them but it doesn’t actually install the program. As I said, portable programs aren’t installed.
Gene -----Original Message----- From: Gene via groups.io Sent: Friday, May 21, 2021 6:38 PM Subject: Re: [TechTalk] thunderbird help needed
You should back up the existing copy of Thunderbird portable before it updates and in general, it’s a good idea to have it backed up so all your settings are maintained and you don’t have to do any setup if you decided to replace the existing copy.
Do you have a backup of an older version that you can place where the current version is now? In other words, if you have a backup, delete the folder of the program you are using and copy the backup to the location you run the program from.
If you don’t have a backup, I’m not sure about how you would downgrade. Others may be able to advise you. I’m going to let my current version update and see if I have any problems. Meantime do you see such things as menus in the program? Do you see the folders treeview? What don’t you see, the messages list? It may be that with more information, we can solve the problem without downgrading or using an older version.

Re: exporting addressbook
Gene
I don’t know if this is likely, but this may be a consequence of running
such an old program with an unintended version of an operating system. Or
it may have nothing to do with it. When you start the export process, at
some point, you are placed in a list of fields to check for export. I
believe they are all checked by default, but try to find out. As you up
and down arrow in the list, you may not hear anything about whether they are
checked. Press the space bar on items in the list and see if you hear
selected. If you do, they may all be unselected. Press the space bar
on all fields you want to be exported, then continue.

It may be that what you are searching for comes up later in the
results. But there is an alternative. I don’t know if this will work
as well as searching on Amazon itself perhaps with a refined search, At times, I
don’t go to a site to search for something. For example, if I want to find
something on Youtube, I type the name and then youtube in a Google search.
I find it more convenient to use the same search interface for as much as I
can. Try searching for M S Word Amazon in a Google search. You will
find results. You’ll have to decide if they are satisffactory.
