As far as not seeing anything about Thunderbird being up-to-date, I’m not sure but I think you are using NVDA.  For some reason, when you are in the about dialog, browse mode is off.  Turn it on, NVDA key space, and then you can move around as though you are on a web page.  You will see the line of text if it is there.

Try control tabbing and see if you move to a different part of the program where the f6 key works.

Others may suggest settings you can change.  I haven’t seen what you are describing.

Yes, I reinstalled thunderbird but, it no longer lets me use f6 keys to get to the treeview and I can tab in to the different accounts. When I used thunderbird in the past, the start page came up and I used f6 key that would take me to a treeview box and I could tab between accounts. So I could close the treeviews with the arrow keys. I do not see any of this now. I cant even find the update thunderbird. I only see it in the about thunderbird page and I hit update and nothing happens! I do not even get a message that you using the latest update of thunderbird.  Thank you Heather

If you are saying that you have the same problem after reinstalling the program as with the old one, then it isn’t very likely isn’t the program.  If the installation file were corrupted, the program would very likely not install.  But we need to know just what is going on.  Are you saying that you have the same problem now as before?

I believe I have an older installation file I can send you.  You can try that older version.  If it works properly don’t upgrade if, for some unknown reason, the current version doesn’t work properly but the older one does.

When using shortcut keys with Windows 10 there's a considerable lag time for program response to the shortcut keystrokes.  Using the Taskbar cuts out this lag time considerably if not entirely.  Many people have wondered why this is, but no one has provided an answer.  Sometimes shortcut keystrokes work flawlessly, but mostly there's the lag time whereas the Taskbar method works all the time.

However, it may be that the main or perhaps only reason to reorganize the task bar is to change the number you use to open something such as Windows key 1 instead of Windows key 4.  When you are actually on the task bar, you can get to the item you want to be on with first letter navigation.

Do you use short cuts and short cut commands such as control alt j to open programs?  I find them more convenient to use and they require no changes once made such as changing the position of the icon.  And you have a great many of them available, the whole alphabet and I believe the numbers one through zero.  You have even more, by using control alt and for more control shift with all the same numbers and letters available for both.  But as a matter of practicality, you wouldn’t want to just add more and more short cut commands.  I have perhaps eightor nine.  There are times when I use the start search to open something I don’t open often to avoid clutter.

There is nothing wrong with using the task bar and the Windows key number way of opening programs but I don’t think, as I said, that it is as convenient as shortcut commands.  also, with shortcut commands, you can use letters that mean something to you and are easy to remember, control alt n for NVDA, control alt j for JAWS, control alt w for word, etc.

Bro,

If you can't get drag and drop to work the only way to reorganize the Taskbar is to unpin all the items and repin them in the order you want them.  First try rebooting your computer and starting fresh, so to speak.  Below is the drag and drop keystrokes I use and they don't always work on the first or second try, so keep trying a few times.  Unloading and reloading Jaws between attempts does help.

1. Move to the program's button that you want to move.
2. Press Insert + Numpad Minus to route the Jaws Cursor to the PC cursor, and then press Insert + Numpad Slash to lock the left mouse button, in other
words, start holding it down.
3. Press Numpad Plus to switch back to using the PC cursor, and then press either Left Arrow or Right Arrow the number of times which is the number of
positions which you want to move the program either to the left or right respectively. This moves the PC cursor to the position where you want the program
to end up.
4. Press Insert + Numpad Minus to route the Jaws cursor to the PC cursor, and press Insert + Numpad Slash to unlock the left mouse button, in other words,
stop holding it down.
5. Finally, press Numpad Plus to switch back to the PC cursor.

Left Mouse Button Lock:  CTRL, WINDOWS Key + 8
Right Mouse Button Lock: CTRL, WINDOWS Key + 9

Hi. I'm using Gmail with outlook 2016. I've had a similar issue lately where some messages are not appearing in my inbox, but they are showing up in my important messages folder. Not sure why this is as I haven't changed anything in gmail settings, so check your important messages folder and see if it's there.

How do I change my name as it's displayed in the From field when sending emails?  I've looked in Tools / Accounts and can't seem to find a place to change the current display name, only creating a new account from the way it looks / sounds.

I've pressed the spacebar on the current account / email button, but I'm not finding the current display name to change.  All input is appreciated.  Thanks much.

Re: amazon search

I often use the google method also for amazon and youtube etc. searches. One techneque not mentioned for a google search is the "site:" prefix, withoquotation marks of course. So fore example:

site:www.amazon.com "your search terms"

This limits the search in the specified url. In google it will first look for the terms as entered as a whole phrase, then it will emphasize
the terms in the order written. The emphasize result can be used on purpose if that term is important in what you want above the other
termss. After that google looks for term combinations based on the order given. For example it will try the first two terms as a unit of
search etc.; and go on for the other term combinations.

On Sat, 22 May 2021, Gene wrote:

Since two people have reported the problem, it may be more likely that it is some sort of amazon problem and not related to the browser. But trying another browser is a good idea.

Then, there is my earlier message where I explain how to find results on the Amazon site using Google or it will probably work with many other search engines as well.

Amazon started showing me all these extensive searches not related to the item sometime yesterday, and a couple times it even went to some weird Microsoft/bing search. It's never been hard to search on Amazon, but something weird happened a few times lately and I am going to switch browsers should it happen again.

On reasonably sophisticated sites, searches should be sophisticated enough not to need qquotes in most cases. I didn???t use quotes when I tried searching for what is specified on the site and the search worked as I thought it probably would, showing results for what I wrote without usingg quotes.

What might the problem be? I???m not sure but the first thing I would do would be to try another browser in case something, who knows what, went wrong with this one, addware, some sort of other malware that shows lots of results that aren???t wanted, possibly some thing else I don???t know about.

But places like Amazon and Google are consumer products and design search to work well when used by people who know almost nothing about how to search. This ability has been an area of concentration and improvement over a good while and is essential for such consumer products.

Hi all,

Put your search term in quotes. That will force the search engine to
look for it as a single string.

Re: reorganizing the taskbar on win 10

Gene

Laptop keystrokes:

Here is how to lock the mouse buttons in laptop keyboard layout.

Left Mouse Button Lock:  CTRL, WINDOWS Key + 8
Right Mouse Button Lock: CTRL, WINDOWS Key + 9

Stay safe & take care.  Mike.
Just once, I want a username and password prompt to say:  "Close Enough!"

Hi,
I can't seem to get the drag and drop feature to work using jfw 2020, can
someone provide another tip on how to drag and drop using jaws, more so how
to reorganize my taskbar. Meaning, if I have an item on number six, and I'd
like for it to be number 2, how do I do that?

Re: thunderbird help needed

The instructions may work for a considerably older version of Thunderbird.  They don’t work with recent versions.
I’m not sure which screen-reader you are using but I think its NVDA.
Do the following:
O;pen options as previously described.
Once opened, turn off browse mode with NVDA space.
If you want to get to the list shift tab, perhaps two times.  There is no need if general is what you want to use.  You are always using it by default when you open options.
There are four items in the list, not five.  It may well be that there used to be five.
Tab a lot of times.  You will get to a check for updates button.
Tab again and you will be in a series of radio buttons for how Thunderbird handles updates.  Up or down arrow until you have checked the ooone that says notify me but let me update myself.  That isn’t the wordding but that’s what it means and you will know it.

That’s all you have to do.
Turn browse mode on again with NVDA key space.
Close options with control f4, not alt f4.  You will now be in the main ;program window again.

When you have opened  the options page of the tools menu, pressControl-Home to make sure you are at the top of the page and arrow down once from the top  to the list box and press enter to open it.  Make sure general is selected, which is the first item on the list of five items, and press enter again to close the list box.  You should now be able to use header navigation to scroll to  the Updates tab, where you should be abel to tab to the check for updates button.

The latest version of Thunderbird is 78.10.2.  Go to the tools menu and select the options menu.  On the options menu, use header navigation to reach the update tab and then tab through the options until you land on the check for updates button.

Hello, I downloaded a fresh copy of thunderbird it is 78.4.0 64 bit. I went to the update manager in the about page and it seems to not have any updates is this correct? I have to start over as I believe my profiles were corrupted when I tried to install them with the new copy, I had the same issues. So this is my second try to redo thunderbird.  Is this the most current version now? Thanks Heather

I doubt you did anything.  It may be that the update itself didn’t go properly.  It usually doesn’t happen but things go wrong sometimes with all sorts of things.  I assume you saw my messages and will keep a copy of the program as a backup to guard against possible problems in future.

Okay, thanks everyone, I truly appreciate all the help. I plan on deleting the portable copy and reinstalling it again. I have the profiles folder saved so I can put it back. I just hate not knowing what exactly happened to make my thunderbird go hay wire after it updated. I just wanted to know so I do not do it again in the future.I hope the profiles are okay. It was a real pain with google to add 2 accounts and I cant remember what we did to add the second one to thunderbird. I was trying to find my notes on it tonight and could not find them with the steps. So I hope tomorrow is another day where my brain works better than today, smils! Heather

Whatever you do, after you solve the problem, back up the portable program.  That’s one of the important reasons to use the portable version.  If anything becomes corrupted, you don’t have to do any trouble shooting.  Just delete the program and copy the folder from the backup location to where you have the folder you are working in now.

As far as how to remove a portable program, it isn’t installed.  Just delete the folder and you will have deleted the program.

There is an installer but it doesn’t install the program.  It places it on your machine, that is, it creates the folders and places the files in them but it doesn’t actually install the program.  As I said, portable programs aren’t installed.

You should back up the existing copy of Thunderbird portable before it updates and in general, it’s a good idea to have it backed up so all your settings are maintained and you don’t have to do any setup if you decided to replace the existing copy.

Do you have a backup of an older version that you can place where the current version is  now?  In other words, if you have a backup, delete the folder of the program you are using and copy the backup to the location you run the program from.

If you don’t have a backup, I’m not sure about how you would downgrade.  Others may be able to advise you.  I’m going to let my current version update and see if I have any problems.  Meantime do you see such things as menus in the program?  Do you see the folders treeview?  What don’t you see, the messages list?  It may be that with more information, we can solve the problem without downgrading or using an older version.

I can write a message in thunderbird using the keyboard keystrokes but, I am unable to access my messages after the update. IS there something I should do to make look like it did  before the update? Or can I downgrade to the last version before it updated? I am using my old app the windows mail app. I want my thunderbird back. Thank you Heather

Re: thunder bird not accessible

Gene

If you are saying that you have the same problem after reinstalling the program as with the old one, then it isn’t very likely isn’t the program.  If the installation file were corrupted, the program would very likely not install.  But we need to know just what is going on.  Are you saying that you have the same problem now as before?

I believe I have an older installation file I can send you.  You can try that older version.  If it works properly don’t upgrade if, for some unknown reason, the current version doesn’t work properly but the older one does.

Thanks I will think about it. I hate it that a program I used to use seems to be acting strange, could the installation program be bad too? It was a breand new install of thunderbird and it acts like the old one. Heather
