I made a mistake in my last message on this subject.  You won’t find what I am discussing on the home page.  there is a link on the home page that says Screen-reader mode and if you follow it, you will find information about screen[-reader mode including how to use Jarte with JAWS.. 
 
When something happens such as you describe, JARTE stops working with a screen-reader, for example, it’s a good idea to check the web site.  You may find nothing relevant, I wouldn’t be surprised, or the relevant information may be posted later when the developer of the program learns about and addresses the problem, but you may find information that will save you time and trouble.  I don’t know when this information was placed on the site but had it been there around the time this problem arose, you could have continued to use JAWS.
 
Also, I find technical support staff to be wrong often enough that I don’t assume what they say is correct unless I have good reason to believe so.  Asking about this problem on a list like this when it first arose might have gotten you good help.  Either looking at the web site or asking might have. 
 
I’m going into all this to possibly save you and others unnecessary work and inconvenience in future.

What shut down sound?  There is no shutdown sound in Windows 10, unless one has been added as part of  a recent feature update.

There is always a default account in any e-mail program.  Messages will be sent by that account unless you either tell the program to use another account you have set up every time you want to send a message using that account, or unless you make that other account the default account.
 
I only use one account in Thunderbird and I’m not sure how to make another account the default.  Until you learn how, do the following:
When you start a new message or reply, shift tab until you get to the from line.  It is a combo box.  Use alt down arrow to open the combo box.  Then down or up arrow, whichever works, to move to the other account you have set up. 
Tab to wherever you want to work and continue as usual.
 
There is one thing I’m not sure of in this description and you can experiment.  Just tabbing should be enough.  If it doesn’t change the account you are sending the message from, follow the procedure I gave but press enter after moving to the account you want in the combo box.

I sent another message about this in response to another message in the thread.  Evidently, you mean you checked the spam folder in the online interface.  I don’t want to assume that because you speak of the spam folder and spam filter but don’t, as I recall, specify online.
 
Also, I have no idea how likely it may be that GMail has blocked an address or domain.  If it has, I also have no idea how likely it is that you can have it unblocked. 
 
Whatever the case, do you have another e-mail address with a different provider?
 
also, if this can be worked out, the person may be able to send the message to someone you know and that person can forward it to you.

The original message said she had checked her spam filter.  My question is are you using a POPP3 or anIMAP account?  Did you check the spam filter online and did you check in your e-mail program,  if you are using a POP3 account?  They aren’t the same folder in that case and you have to check both. 
 
I suppose with an IMAP account, you could have an additional spam folder in your e-mail program and you would have to check both.
 
Also, some providers black list certain addresses and domains that are rightly or wrongly believed to send a lot of spam. If so, the only way to correct the problem is to have your provider remove the block.  I don’t know enough about that to discuss it further.  Others should.
 
What is the domain of the e-mail address, the part of the address such as GMail.com, AT&T.com, the part immediately after the at sign that indicates the provider?

Heather.  Your TB problem is as peculiar as it is complicating.  First things first, can you access your TB menus, like file, view, options and so on?  This is the first benchmark to test if your apps are working as they should.  If you can access those menus, for example, can you access the usual items in them?  Cheers!

It sounds like somehow, some sort of tool bar got installed for Thunderbird.  Have you checked your programs and features area to see if there is anything unfamiliar there?

As far as not seeing anything about Thunderbird being up-to-date, I’m not sure but I think you are using NVDA.  For some reason, when you are in the about dialog, browse mode is off.  Turn it on, NVDA key space, and then you can move around as though you are on a web page.  You will see the line of text if it is there.

Try control tabbing and see if you move to a different part of the program where the f6 key works.

Yes, I reinstalled thunderbird but, it no longer lets me use f6 keys to get to the treeview and I can tab in to the different accounts. When I used thunderbird in the past, the start page came up and I used f6 key that would take me to a treeview box and I could tab between accounts. So I could close the treeviews with the arrow keys. I do not see any of this now. I cant even find the update thunderbird. I only see it in the about thunderbird page and I hit update and nothing happens! I do not even get a message that you using the latest update of thunderbird.  Thank you Heather

If you are saying that you have the same problem after reinstalling the program as with the old one, then it isn’t very likely isn’t the program.  If the installation file were corrupted, the program would very likely not install.  But we need to know just what is going on.  Are you saying that you have the same problem now as before?

 

I believe I have an older installation file I can send you.  You can try that older version.  If it works properly don’t upgrade if, for some unknown reason, the current version doesn’t work properly but the older one does.

Try updating your Office suite, steps below.  Also Kimsan try, Insert + Escape as well as the, F5 key.

JAWSKey+Escape, Repaints all currently displayed items on the screen.

 

Note:  Use the steps below to update all Office programs from within any program.  When you update from any of the Office programs you update all of them.

I have a few things pinned to the task bar,  but  the majority of my “favourites”  are shortcuts on the desktop.

So far, the win10 updates have not bothered my desktop shortcuts or the task bar,   but 2 weeks ago, an office update  mucked up my outlook 2016 real good.

I think Gene is still using Windows 7 so he might be having a better experience than me.  For me, after switching to Windows 10, it isn’t uncommon for Windows updates to screw up shortcuts on my desktop.  And, this is on two different laptops.

 

I wonder if I am the only one with this problem.  But, the task bar works great for Apps that I frequently use.

 

I know 3 different people here in my small community who recently contracted Covid.  So, I say to all.  Please keep your guard up for just a little bit longer.

When using shortcut keys with Windows 10 there's a considerable lag time for program response to the shortcut keystrokes.  Using the Taskbar cuts out this lag time considerably if not entirely.  Many people have wondered why this is, but no one has provided an answer.  Sometimes shortcut keystrokes work flawlessly, but mostly there's the lag time whereas the Taskbar method works all the time.

However, it may be that the main or perhaps only reason to reorganize the task bar is to change the number you use to open something such as Windows key 1 instead of Windows key 4.  When you are actually on the task bar, you can get to the item you want to be on with first letter navigation.

 

Do you use short cuts and short cut commands such as control alt j to open programs?  I find them more convenient to use and they require no changes once made such as changing the position of the icon.  And you have a great many of them available, the whole alphabet and I believe the numbers one through zero.  You have even more, by using control alt and for more control shift with all the same numbers and letters available for both.  But as a matter of practicality, you wouldn’t want to just add more and more short cut commands.  I have perhaps eightor nine.  There are times when I use the start search to open something I don’t open often to avoid clutter. 

 

There is nothing wrong with using the task bar and the Windows key number way of opening programs but I don’t think, as I said, that it is as convenient as shortcut commands.  also, with shortcut commands, you can use letters that mean something to you and are easy to remember, control alt n for NVDA, control alt j for JAWS, control alt w for word, etc.

If you can't get drag and drop to work the only way to reorganize the Taskbar is to unpin all the items and repin them in the order you want them.  First try rebooting your computer and starting fresh, so to speak.  Below is the drag and drop keystrokes I use and they don't always work on the first or second try, so keep trying a few times.  Unloading and reloading Jaws between attempts does help.

 

1. Move to the program's button that you want to move.
2. Press Insert + Numpad Minus to route the Jaws Cursor to the PC cursor, and then press Insert + Numpad Slash to lock the left mouse button, in other
words, start holding it down.
3. Press Numpad Plus to switch back to using the PC cursor, and then press either Left Arrow or Right Arrow the number of times which is the number of
positions which you want to move the program either to the left or right respectively. This moves the PC cursor to the position where you want the program
to end up.
4. Press Insert + Numpad Minus to route the Jaws cursor to the PC cursor, and press Insert + Numpad Slash to unlock the left mouse button, in other words,

5. Finally, press Numpad Plus to switch back to the PC cursor.

I am not sure, It is the portable version, not the installed version. Where do I go to check? The only thing I installed was the portable x program for thunderbird and it only asked me for the location for the portable copy to be put in. My program was ThunderbirdPortable_78.4.0_English . exe. Thanks Heather

It sounds like somehow, some sort of tool bar got installed for Thunderbird.  Have you checked your programs and features area to see if there is anything unfamiliar there?

As far as not seeing anything about Thunderbird being up-to-date, I’m not sure but I think you are using NVDA.  For some reason, when you are in the about dialog, browse mode is off.  Turn it on, NVDA key space, and then you can move around as though you are on a web page.  You will see the line of text if it is there.

I believe I have an older installation file I can send you.  You can try that older version.  If it works properly don’t upgrade if, for some unknown reason, the current version doesn’t work properly but the older one does.

I am using NVDA. I reinstalled thunderbird as a knew copy and set it up. It is running the latest version of windows10. I even restarted the pc after I reinstalled the program, no I did not need to do this but, I wanted to be sure. Yes, I also grabbed the NVDA add ons to NVDA after reading the message about it. So not sure which poltergeist has control over my machine. Cheers Heather

Have you done anhything else around the time this problem started, or has your computer done anything such as a Windows update, or have you uninstalled something?  Are you having any problem using any browsers?  What browsers do you use?

 

This is beginning to sound like a problem that isn’t a Thunderbird problem.  Do you know about the com registration tool in the NVDA tools submenu? 

 

I’ve never run it, but running it may fix your problem.  If there are any prompts or dialogs when you run it, I imagine they will be self-explanatory. 

 

At times, certain files in Windows become unregistered.  This mainly affects the performance of certain browsers but I wonder if it may affect Thunderbird as well.  Though it seems unlikely, running the registration utility might solve the problem.

 

Also, before you run it, you may want to try another screen-reader to see if Thunderbird is able to be read properly by that screen-reader.
