It has been almost gospel among computer advisers to apply updates that aren't full updates when they are released. That is, security and stability updates. I think that they should be deferred

You are fifteen or twenty years out of date. Microsoft isn't what I would consider a monopoly any longer. It has the most widely used operating system but it faces enormous competition in all sorts

I'd rather have a monopoly than an anarchy, where nothing works anywhere but on the particular brand of machine or operating system one owns. No compatibility there with anything anywhere.
