Re: Pinning things to the Taskbar was Chrome Question

You may be able to do that, I haven't
checked. But you can also send a shortcut to the desktop for the file and
assign a short cut key. I did that for a file I open regularly enough that
I want to open it very conveniently. You can also create short cuts to
folders and drives and assign short cut keys.

Re: Chrome Question
Lisa Belville
I have been hearing this about Desktop shortcuts since Windows '98.?? Supposedly, the more shortcuts on your Desktop, the longer the boot time because the OS has to verify all of those shortcuts.?? I haven't noticed any longer boot time for this PC.?? When I got it, Windows 10 was already installed and it had the default apps Windows puts on the desktop, along with several others the local place added.?? I've since added at least a dozen more and the time from completely shut down to log on and ready to use hasn't changed by a noticeable amount since I started using this PC.
Maybe if someone had hundreds of shortcuts and they were constantly moving files and folders around it would make a difference, but who does that anyway?

Re: latest firefox issues
Gene
I would suggest using Chrome or perhaps a
Chrome-based browser instead as your main browser. I tried the latest
Firefox and it appears to be more easily bogged down by web pages that might
slow your system down. I'm only basing this on one web page, I didn't try
the browser on much else, but it is a page I use a lot. At times, it does
something that slows down browsers, maybe it reloads the page quickly and
repeatedly, I don't know. The new Firefox has problems on the page.
it slows down and looses its place, taking me a number of lines up the page or
staying on the same line when I issue the move by heading command. Chrome
isn't bothered at all on the page and I suspect its performance is better
on enough web pages to matter to a lot of users. But people can test and
draw their own conclusions. This is based on one page and what I suspect
so it is a guess rather than a conclusion.

I am using the latest version of windows 10 pro, latest firefox and latest nvda. When I am using firefox, the speech keeps hanging up, it all freezes, not sure what is causing it, it could be an add-on, how do I find the list of add-ons in the latest firefox please? Re: Chrome Question
Gene
I believe that things on the desktop take up
memory. I'm not sure why, because desktop items are in a folder, so my
information may be wrong. But this information about removing things from
the desktop sounds so misleading that it might as well be wrong in most
cases
It is important to be very careful of
sources.
Unless you don't have enough memory or just barely
enough and are exceeding it at times, I doubt doing anything to the desktop will
cause any problems. Shortcuts are tiny files, perhaps two or three lines
long. That they could have any impact on performance sounds
preposterous.

Mike, this is very handy. I read some where on the net the other day that getting rid of items on the desktop makes a PC run better. Especially photos and screen shots. But the author also recommended that all possible shortcuts also be removed.
I’ll play with this a bit. I think I might need a keyboard with two Windows keys instead of just one Windows key on the left.

Hi James,
First press, Windows key + T, to open the taskbar. Now right arrow and count what is currently pinned there already. If you want to unpin an item from the taskbar, highlight the icon, open the context menu with the applications key or Shift + F10, now up / down arrow to, Unpin from taskbar, and press enter.
If you want to pin an icon to the taskbar, lets say a shortcut icon on the desktop, highlight the desktop icon, open the context menu, arrow up / down to, Pin to taskbar, and press enter.
Here's how my taskbar is layed out. Windows key + 1 = IE11. Windows key + 2 = Notepad. Windows key + 3 = Outlook Express. Windows key + 4 = Word document1. Windows key + 5 = Chrome. Windows key + 6 = Jaws16. Windows key + 7 = Jaws 18. Windows key + 8 = Jaws 2018. Windows key + 9 = Jaws 2019. Windows key + 0 = Jaws 2020.
You can have up to 10 items pasted to the taskbar, but in order to paste a folder shortcut icon to the taskbar you have to modify the properties of the folder icon shortcut.
Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers! Sent from my

Another way to get around having a shortcut keystroke is pinning the Chrome icon to the taskbar. I never have had a taskbar shortcut icon fail or get deleted.

Re: How do I get Jaws to number emails in Outlook using Jaws
James Bentley
Hi Carolyn
Here are the Outlook 2016 key strokes to accomplish this task. Your Outlook 2013 might be slightly different. From outside of a message, type: alt+v and v again This should put you on a very long sentence that starts with the words: advanced view settings In Outlook 2016, I tab 3 times to description filter and hit enter. Then I have to tab around 10 times to a button that says clear all. And, then hitthe space bar on that button. Then tab to the OK button and hit enter. Then tab all the way around to make sure that there is not a second OK button that you need to hit. Then from outside of an email message, type insert+page down. Hopefully, you will hear the total number of emails in that folder. And also hear the number of unread emails. I hope that this is close enough to get the job done for you. And, MS Disability Desk is still an option. I have had messages counted in all boxes for years until recently having to repair then replace Microsoft Outlook.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
Now, for all the world, plus willing help from others, it is not happening in any boxes including Inbox. Incidently, they got an extra Inbox on here called Microsoft Data. I have no idea what it is far. Outlook opens to it, and it is simply an inconvenience to me, as it has nothing in it, yet has to be navigated through to get to my Windstream and my Gmail outboxes - never heard of such a thing until this recent problem with Outlook. Indeed, I sound impatient, am impatient having little tolerance for unnecessary problems, as this clearly is, since it did not exist before.

Even with Shift+Tab, in Advanced, when I go to it after highlighting Filger, the only options are Field, whatever that is, and Edit.

Hey group, I've been following this thread with much interest. I use outlook 365 with Jaws 2019. Just to make sure I understand, it is not possible to get the message count info if a rule has been applied? I would like that number info, too, but I'm not willing to sacrifice my rule to get it. Thanks, Norma

Yeah, that's what I was trying to remember. She needs to hit the space bar on clear all. I think that there might be a couple of OK buttons that will also need to be hit.

Re: Chrome Question

The Windows key is to the left of the left alt key. In other words, the left alt key is the first key to the left of the space bar. Next should be the Windows key.

You should also be able to type control+escape to get to the search box in the start menu. Jaws may announce Cortana or Jaws might just say search. If you hearCortana, you can still type words there. This is one of the most powerful features of Windows when you need to try to find something or open a program. etc. James B

Re: Chrome Question
James Bentley

Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers! Sent from my iBarstool. ----- Original Message ----- From: James Bentley Sent: Thursday, November 07, 2019 8:42 AM Subject: Re: [TechTalk] Chrome Question

Hi Shelly,
Another way to get around having a shortcut keystroke is pinning the Chrome icon to the taskbar. I never have had a taskbar shortcut icon fail or get deleted.

Opera the browser wonder
Jaffar Sidek
HI all. I actually have replaced Chrome with Opera as my default browser and have no cause to regret my action. It is a fast, efficient browser with a real effective ad blocker that gets rid of ads that litter articles you want to read. While chrome promotes those ads, Opera blocks them, allowing you to get a smoother, uninterupted read of articles that interest you, which also incidentally makes copying and pasting of articles or snippets much easier. Years ago, Opera was hardly accessible. Now, i think it beats the standard mainstream browsers any time. They have, indeed, come a very long way. Cheers!
