Re: Pinning things to the Taskbar was Chrome Question

You may be able to do that, I haven't checked.  But you can also send a shortcut to the desktop for the file and assign a short cut key.  I did that for a file I open regularly enough that I want to open it very conveniently.  You can also create short cuts to folders and drives and assign short cut keys.

Hi, Mike,

How can you do this for an individual file?  I have a few I open several times a day, and this would make things much more efficient.

         Hi Everyone:

Since using google chrome, I when to properties and put in a shortcut
key and I made it control alt C which works great but it only lasts a
couple of weeks and then deletes itself.  When I tried to hit control,
alt C, nothing happened so I went back into properties and I had to do
everything all over again.  I can't tell you how many times this has
happened since I started using Chrome.  Even when I put the shortcut key
in, I have to go to where it says and maximize it again.  Everything
that I have done deletes itself.  So after I maximize it, I hit apply
and then OK. All of my other programs are fine and the shortcut key
stays and doesn't delete itself.  I saw something in properties where it
says change Icon but I didn't do anything.  Any help on this would be
greatly appreciated.  I just have no idea why this keeps happening and I
even had someone who is sighted put it in there way and it deleted

I have been hearing this about Desktop shortcuts since Windows '98.?? Supposedly, the more shortcuts on your Desktop, the longer the boot time because the OS has to verify all of those shortcuts.?? I haven't noticed any longer boot time for this PC.?? When I got it, Windows 10 was already installed and it had the default apps Windows puts on the desktop, along with several others the local place added.?? I've since added at least a dozen more and the time from completely shut down to log on and ready to use hasn't changed by a noticeable amount since I started using this PC.

Maybe if someone had hundreds of shortcuts and they were constantly moving files and folders around it would make a difference, but who does that anyway?

Re: latest firefox issues

Gene

I would suggest using Chrome or perhaps a Chrome-based browser instead as your main browser.  I tried the latest Firefox and it appears to be more easily bogged down by web pages that might slow your system down.  I'm only basing this on one web page, I didn't try the browser on much else, but it is a page I use a lot.  At times, it does something that slows down browsers, maybe it reloads the page quickly and repeatedly, I don't know. The new Firefox has problems on the page.  it slows down and looses its place, taking me a number of lines up the page or staying on the same line when I issue the move by heading command.  Chrome isn't bothered at all on the page and I suspect its performance is better on enough web pages to matter to a lot of users.  But people can test and draw their own conclusions.  This is based on one page and what I suspect so it is a guess rather than a conclusion.

I am using the latest version of windows 10 pro, latest firefox and latest nvda. When I am using firefox, the speech keeps hanging up, it all freezes, not sure what is causing it, it could be an add-on, how do I find the list of add-ons in the latest firefox please? I click on add-on manager, it just takes me to the web page for add-ons. Nvda seems to work ok with other applications.

Re: How do I get Jaws to number emails in Outlook using Jaws

James Bentley

Hi Carolyn

Here are the Outlook 2016 key strokes to accomplish this task. Your Outlook 2013 might be slightly different.

From outside of a message, type: alt+v and v again

This should put you on a very long sentence that starts with the words:
advanced view settings

In Outlook 2016, I tab 3 times to description filter and hit enter.

Then I have to tab around 10 times to a button that says clear all. And, then hitthe space bar on that button.

Then tab to the OK button and hit enter. Then tab all the way around to make sure that there is not a second OK button that you need to hit.

Then from outside of an email message, type insert+page down. Hopefully, you will hear the total number of emails in that folder. And also hear the number of unread emails.

I hope that this is close enough to get the job done for you. And, MS Disability Desk is still an option.

Good luck,

James B

Even with Shift+Tab, in Advanced, when I go to it after highlighting Filger, the only options are Field, whatever that is, and Edit.

I am sure that eventually, I will be driven to calling Microsoft Disability again.

Settings for displaying number of mailbox messages 1. Get in mailbox you want to remove filters from and set numbers in.
2. Alt+v+v.
3. Tab three times to Filters.
4. Shift+Tab.
5. Right Arrow to Advanced Tab.
6. Tab to Remove.
7. Tab to OK.
8. Tab to OK again - VOILA, you're done.

Trouble is, I have been trying that; I tried again. I am unable to make it work.

I may have fixed my biggest problem with Outlook. All devices would hang several times per day forcing me to restart the device. That solution is available if someone else has the same problem.

The MS Disability Desk is a lot of help most of the time. However, they have really messed up my PC a couple of times. I have started creating a backup image of my PC before I even call them. Also, I create an image if I am going to mess with anything that I have doubts about.

For example, I accidentally locked myself out of one of my laptops while messing with pass words and user profiles. It only took an hour to replace the entire drive from an image that I had made a few hours before I started messing around.

Cheers,

James B

James, if Microsoft hadn't fixed my Outlook (all but filters), I would have called a local computer guy, but am thankful not to have had to spend that money. Sometimes though, a knowledgeable sightie can work wonders in a little bit of time. My husband is good, but has no clue about Outlook or any other email client.

I might be stuck with Office 365. I'll reluctantly get over the numbering of emails if I must. Its just a massive learning curve. Plus, I have an unidentified problem.

All 3 of my devices will hang. That is Outlook hangs.
Then, I must do a forced shutdown and restart Outlook. This happens 2 or 3 times a day.

disability tech support reinstalled my server settings on two machines with no success. They are now suggesting a repair on Outlook.

I have put that on hold for a day or so. I am Googling around to learn more. There are plenty of people who have the same problem And, with many solutions that I want to investigate before I get stuck having to install an image backup because MS or I destroyed my current drive.

I really want Office 365 to work. I am accustomed to some of its menus and keystrokes. it has a lot of very cool features. Its spell-checker and language checker are awesome. And, I am now liking Imap. but, still that learning curve.

Cheers,

James B

Insert+Page Down used to tell me the number, which I gave
that command on another list. However, if the filters are on, that command will provide no number information. I would love to know how to remove the filter. But, Insert+8 will sai a message and one out of seven or 22 out of 35, whatever is there.

As far as being announced 50 out of 100 not at all sure of how one would do that with JAWS. Hearing how many emails within whatever given folder, just try using the keystroke (while focus is within this folder)

Hi all,

I've been using Outlook with IMap for over a week now. I am grateful to all who talked me in to trying it again. 4 or 5 years ago, it didn't work for me. Now, I have a faster internet connection and faster computers and I am loving Outlook and imap.

I still have one more item that I hope can be resolved. I want to know how many emails are in my In-box and where I am in the list. For example, if I have 100 emails in my In-Box and I am on email number 50, I would like Jaws to say 50 out of 100.

I have the check box in folder properties checked that tells Outlook to number all mail. What else should I try?

I am using Jaws 19, Office365 and Windows10.

Thanks for any ideas,

James B

Re: How do I get Jaws to number emails in Outlook using Jaws

Carolyn Arnold

I have had messages counted in all boxes for years until recently having to repair then replace Microsoft Outlook.

Now, for all the world, plus willing help from others, it is not happening in any boxes including Inbox.

Incidently, they got an extra Inbox on here called Microsoft Data. I have no idea what it is far. Outlook opens to it, and it is simply an inconvenience to me, as it has nothing in it, yet has to be navigated through to get to my Windstream and my Gmail outboxes - never heard of such a thing until this recent problem with Outlook.

Indeed, I sound impatient, am impatient having little tolerance for unnecessary problems, as this clearly is, since it did not exist before.

Hey group, I've been following this thread with much interest. I use outlook 365 with Jaws 2019. Just to make sure I understand, it is not possible to get the message count info if a rule has been applied? I would like that number info, too, but I'm not willing to sacrifice my rule to get it. Thanks, Norma

James, I doubled checked in my Outlook tutorial and found this:

Settings for displaying number of mailbox messages 1. Get in mailbox you want to remove filters from and set numbers in.
2. Alt+v+v.
3. Tab three times to Filters.
4. Shift+Tab.
5. Right Arrow to Advanced Tab.
6. Tab to Remove.
7. Tab to OK.
8. Tab to OK again - VOILA, you're done.

Trouble is, I have been trying that; I tried again. I am unable to make it work.

Now, what is it that I do about Clear All. A guy at Microsoft said doing something about Clear All, said it was a little complicated. If he'd just have sent me an email with numbered steps, probably end of problem for him and me.

Even with Shift+Tab, in Advanced, when I go to it after highlighting Filger, the only options are Field, whatever that is, and Edit.

James B

Or something like that.

Carolyn, are you still not getting anything when you type insert+page down? I hear the number of total emails in the folder plus the number of unread emails. And, I hear zoom 10%

Hi,

Cheers,

James B

Just to make sure I understand, it is not possible to get the message count info if a rule has been applied? I would like that number info, too, but I'm not willing to sacrifice my rule to get it.

Hi

I am using the latest version of windows 10 pro, latest firefox and latest nvda. When I am using firefox, the speech keeps hanging up, it all freezes, not sure what is causing it, it could be an add-on, how do I find the list of add-ons in the latest firefox please? I click on add-on manager, it just takes me to the web page for add-ons. Nvda seems to work ok with other applications.

Re: Chrome Question

The Windows key is to the left of the left alt key. In other words, the left alt key is the first key to the left of the space bar. Next should be the Windows key.

You should also be able to type control+escape to get to the search box in the start menu. Jaws may announce Cortana or Jaws might just say search. If you hearCortana, you can still type words there. This is one of the most powerful features of Windows when you need to try to find something or open a program. etc.

Even when I put the shortcut
key in, I have to go to where it says and maximize it again.
Everything that I have done deletes itself. So after I maximize it, I
hit apply and then OK. All of my other programs are fine and the
shortcut key stays and doesn't delete itself. I saw something in
properties where it says change Icon but I didn't do anything. Any
help on this would be greatly appreciated. I just have no idea why
this keeps happening and I even had someone who is sighted put it in
there way and it deleted itself like it does for me.

Try Shift+Tabbing instead when focused in the Advanced Tab, and on my end, there's only a Clear All button.

Trouble is, I have been trying that; I tried again. I am unable to make it work.

Hi,

Cheers,

James B

Cheers,

James B

Re: Chrome Question

Mike, this is very handy.  I read some where on the net the other day that getting rid of items on the desktop makes a PC run better.  Especially photos and screen shots.  But the author also recommended that all possible shortcuts also be removed.

I’ll play with this a bit.  I think I might need a keyboard with two Windows keys instead of just one Windows key on the left.

Hi James,

First press, Windows key + T, to open the taskbar.  Now right arrow and count what is currently pinned there already.  If you want to unpin an item from the taskbar, highlight the icon, open the context menu with the applications key or Shift + F10, now up / down arrow to, Unpin from taskbar, and press enter.

If you want to pin an icon to the taskbar, lets say a shortcut icon on the desktop, highlight the desktop icon, open the context menu, arrow up / down to, Pin to taskbar, and press enter.

Here's how my taskbar is layed out.

Windows key + 1 = IE11.

Windows key + 2 = Notepad.

Windows key + 3 = Outlook Express.

Windows key + 4 = Word document1.

Windows key + 5 = Chrome.

Windows key + 6 = Jaws16.

Windows key + 7 = Jaws 18.

Windows key + 8 = Jaws 2018.

Windows key + 9 = Jaws 2019.

Windows key + 0 = Jaws 2020.

You can have up to 10 items pasted to the taskbar, but in order to paste a folder shortcut icon to the taskbar you have to modify the properties of the folder icon shortcut.

Opera the browser wonder

Jaffar Sidek

HI all.  I actually have replaced Chrome with Opera as my default browser and have no cause to regret my action.  It is a fast, efficient browser with a real effective ad blocker that gets rid of ads that litter articles you want to read.  While chrome promotes those ads, Opera blocks them, allowing you to get a smoother, uninterupted read of articles that interest you, which also incidentally makes copying and pasting of articles or snippets much easier.  Years ago, Opera was hardly accessible. Now, i think it beats the standard mainstream browsers any time. They have, indeed, come a very long way.  Cheers!
