It depends on the price.

I can’t tell by the number, what generation of * core 7 processor?

It says ddr3 ram;  ddr4 has been in use for many years now.

I would  expect a new computer  to have a s s d   drive of some sort.

I would definitely look around and see what is available for the same money.

Hey there, Jerry, Brian Zolo here in Gahanna, Ohio, feel free to call me BZ, grin!  You’ve got a great machine there; the only change that you might consider would be to go with a solid state drive as opposed to a mechanical hard drive as you’ll definitely get better performance, faster boot time and less energy use with a solid state drive.  That western digital certainly isn’t a bad drive and it’s awesome that you’ll have a dvd drive as well.  It’s getting harder and harder to find dvd drives in laptops anymore.  If you get a solid state drive, go with the 512 though it won’t be as big as your drive on your machine.  The prices on solid state drives are definitely coming down but they’re still more expensive than mechanical drives and don’t give you as much storage though that’s changing and will get even better.  You’ve got a great machine there, have a great day!  BZ!

Hi Alan,

You have to modify a speech and sound scheme to make Jaws report, Cap or Capital, on a capital letter.  Below are 2 sets of steps if you want to try them.  Step #2 is the easiest.

#1:

1. Open the Settings Center with, Jaws / Insert key + 6, on the number row,
& press, control, shift + D, to open Settings Center default all
applications
2. Arrow down to Speech & Sound Schemes, right arrow to open.
3. Arrow down to, Modify Schemes...., & press the spacebar to open.  Don't
press enter here!  Pressing enter will close the Settings Center.  Also make
note of what scheme is highlighted as the default scheme.
4. Tab to, edit selected scheme button, & press the spacebar.
5. You should be on the, General Page / tab so, control + tab to the Misc. page / tab, & tab 1 time into the list of options.
Arrow down to, Cap             Speak text           Using SingleCapVoice
tab 1 time to a list of choices, arrow up / down to, Speak Item checked.
6. Tab 1 time to, select voice alias button, and press the spacebar to open this list of voice options to speak, Cap, for capitol letters.  Tab to, Okay
press the spacebar, tab to, Text edit and Type in the word, Cap, or whatever you want spoken for capitol letters, and tab to, Okay, and press the spacebar.
7. Tab to, save selected scheme button, and press the spacebar.  Tab to, Okay, press the spacebar, tab to, Okay and press enter to save and close.
8. Unload Jaws and reload Jaws for the change to take affect.

#2:

One way is to switch the speech scheme.  If you switch to proof reading (attributes) you will hear "cap" instead of the pitch increase.
The down side is that you also get attribute changes; however, you get a voice change, not announcement of "bold" "underline" and so on.
One could modify that scheme so it just says cap, but I've never taken the time to do that.

So, is there an equivalent command in jaws or is the pitch change the only
way? I like the way my iPhone handles this by announcing a capital letter.

Re: new computer

Brian Vogel <britechguy@...>

One would need to know the price, as what are "great specs" at one price point are "horrible specs" at another, or at least can be.

My primary concern is the fact that the system has a 2TB HDD as its only drive.  I am not anti-HDD for bulk data storage, but the performance boost one gets from an SSD as the primary system drive is significant.  RAM may be perfectly fine, or you may want or need to expand it depending on what you actually do and how the machine reacts.  It would be worth asking how many RAM slots exist in this machine, and how that 8 GB is split among them.

Re: Accessible free PC driver upgrade software

Brian Vogel <britechguy@...>

Fanus,

The issue you're having sometimes occurs, and no one ever really knows why (and I'm sure the actual underlying causes are myriad).  What I suggest is following these instructions: Doing a Windows 10 Repair Install or Feature Update Using the Windows 10 ISO file

And if you want to be "very strict" with your machine during that process, make sure it's not connected to the internet.  When you have the ISO file you already have all of the essential components needed to do the repair install or feature update.  If there are additional updates that were put in place after Microsoft issued the ISO file then those will be applied via the normal Windows Update process after you again establish internet connectivity.

Hello Brian

Thanks, I hear what you say. The strange thing is that my PC says it wants to upgrade and then it says its going to restart but after the restart it says it could not finish the update, please turn off the pc while the update is cancelled. I am connected to the pc via an ethernet cable to my modem, so internet is available, so I do not know what the problem might be. I was hoping that if the pc could update it would solve my USB problem.

Third-party driver updaters are to be avoided like the plague.  There are only three safe sources of driver updates, and "safe" does not mean there may not be an occasional problem, just that your machine will not have any likelihood of getting something you really don't want like malware, adware, viruses, etc.:

1. Windows Update

2. Your computer manufacturer's support pages, driver's and downloads section, or driver updater software they supply, e.g., HP Support Assistant, Toshiba Service Station, and similar.

3. A specific component in your computer's manufacturer, on its support pages or via its driver updater software, e.g., Intel Driver and Support Assistant.

Re: Syncing Outlook on 2nd computer

Brian Vogel <britechguy@...>

No.

If you are comfortable with dealing with registry exports and imports it is possible to export the Outlook account settings from the registry and import them on another machine.  Otherwise you go through the account setup process again, and since it's pretty much fully automated these days it really isn't difficult nor does it take long.

I wonder if those cards can be set to be right protected or

You may be able to find a very accessible driver software DVD as well as an online installation utility on the BHP site. I would request you to be very careful while proceeding with this utility since it tends to install a lot of other unwanted things as well.
