Which may affect the price of or be relevant to market share and the price of items in future but which isn't now and will increase over time.  And a lot of people who will have vision loss in future will use low vision items and won't be blind.

Hi all,

Yes, that may be so, Matt.  However, did you ask Siri about the
percentage of people with disabilities in the world population?  Did
you ask her about how fast the population of elders with visual
impairments is growing?  Because in developed countries elders are
living longer, there is more of a likelihood that these folks will
acquire a disability, blindness, deafness, mobility impairment, etc.
they are now part of the market share.  They will not stop being part
of the market share when they acquire their disabilities.

Yes the cost of things designed to help blind or VI folks is small, but
it is viable and it is growing.

Re: World population and blindness percentage to the world population

Gerald Levy

So as the blind population increases, the demand for products and services to serve their needs will also increase. And as demand increases, prices for these products and services should decrease, right? Only in your dreams. Does anyone seriously believe that Freedom Scientific is going to lower the price of JAWS as more and more people come to rely on it? I don't think so. And as the visually impaired population grows, shouldn't there be an ever-increasing number of accessible products to meet their need? On the contrary, the number of accessible products has been steadily decreasing, not increasing. Ten years ago, for instance, the Independent Living Aids catalog offered four talking and accessible microwave ovens. Today, it offers none, even though there are probably more visually impaired people in the general population than there were ten years ago. The same is true of other appliances. There are fewer "blind-friendly" appliances on the market today than there were just a few years ago, even though the blind and visually impaired population has been increasing.

Yes agree the blindness market is growing and will continue to grow and will
grow rapidly as the baby boomers come of old age.
NO did not ask about disabilities all together as I was more concern with
just low vision and blindness part!

New extra large mouse pointers

Quentin Christensen

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share something very big I've been working on recently - a
massive update to my extra large mouse pointers:
http://www.22point.com.au/cursors.html

Where previously there were 4 different sets of cursors available,
there are now..... over 170! AND, each "pack" now doesn't just
include one set, but four!

There are a heap of new colours and styles to choose from so there's
sure to be something for everyone - including some smaller and more
discreet ones for those who don't necessarily want the extra large
ones.

Do let me know what you think as I've put a heap of work into it and I
hope you like it. All of the new sets are now available to purchase,
although please allow a bit of extra delivery time (up to a day)
during this first week as demand is quite high on these very highly
anticipated new mouse pointers.

Also if you've purchased any of the original sets from me previously
you should have received an update of those, and for those who
responded to my recent survey, an e-mail was also sent to you with
your free gift.

Finally, I wrote a blog piece this week on, not Windows directly, but
Microsoft Office and some new options which make it even easier to
see: https://22point.wordpress.com/2016/02/25/microsoft-office-has-a-new-black-theme/

Kind regards

Quentin.

World population and blindness percentage to the world population

Matt

well ask Siri what was the world population and she said it was about 7.3 billon. Then I ask her the number of blind population in the world, she said 161 million low vision and blind people in the world. So this in round figures is 2.5 percent off the population. This is round figures so being very generous and saying 3percent is low vision and blind. Which this was about what I thought. So the number of even legal blind people would be much less .

So just some interesting facts to consider when we talk about blindness and prices of things and accessibility of things.

Re: winamp question

Yes, 1 through 0 increases the frequencies of the 10 bands and Q through P lowers them.  The accent and Tab keys raise/lower the preamp respectively.  You can also press the letter S while the equalizer window has focus for more options.

You can do it but you may get more or less information depending on your screen-reader.  Also, you may have to install an add on for your screen-reader to get information.  What screen-reader are you using? The procedure to change the Winamp equalizer is as follows:
Open Winamp.  Start it playing something.
It doesn't have to be playing but you won't hear the changes while you are making them if it isn't.
Move into the equalizer window with control tab.
Turn on the equalizer with the letter n.  I don't recall if 1 through 9 or 1 through 0 on the main keyboard raises bands of audio.  I think it's 1 through 0 which would give you a ten band equalizer.
To lower the bands, use the letter keys below the number keys.  For example, as I recall, q will lower the lowest base range and 1 will raise it.
Once finished adjusting the equalizer, you can close the window with control f4.
Use control tab to return to the main window.  you can leave the settings as they are and turn off the equalizer by opening the equalizer Window, alt g, control tabbing into it, and then pressing the letter n to turn it off.  N turns it on or off.  (It's a toggle.
You can then close the window if you wish, as described above.

the second time, both Richard and I were aware of the problem, so he took

Are you talking about UPS or USPS ? as UPS only goes by what the shipper
gives them! For example if you buy something from Walmart and have it
shipped whatever shipping address you give them is what UPS has! UPS does
not change your address at all. The USPS (United State Postal Service) is
the only one that changes your address! So for example : if you move from
3333 Orlando, Florida to 6666 Tampa, Florida then you would put in a change
of address with the USPS and they would change your mailing address. UPS
does not do that !

neighbor why we just went up there and picked up a package, and the second
time, we were able to reach the current resident on the phone, and get it
from him. Richard had to do all kind of things to get my current address
fixed with UPS, and I've lived here for nearly seven years.

I've had that, usually with UPS. But they usually leave some kind of a
paper that says attempted delivery. And I was there all day, right in the
livingroom, staying there so I could hear the doorbell. One of the times, a
person rang my doorbell and told me there was a package in front of my door.
I asked her when it had come and she said some time that morning, and it was
late afternoon. Pam.

Yep, I've had packages which were completely lost in the system as well. A
couple of times even when they claimed it had been delivered. I've also
experienced packages simply being left out in the hall. Or claims of
attempted deliveries which I know for a fact never took place. Granted,
those experiences are not necessarily frequent, but frequent enough that
there is definitely at least some laziness and incompetence involved if
nothing else.

Absolutely not true. The USPS is so incompetent and inefficient that I
often do not get updated tracking infornation until after my shipment has
been delivered. Last year, they managed to lose two fairly large packages
that had been shipped by Amazon which just vanished without a trace
somewhere in their system, never to be seen again. In both cases, Amazon
refunded the cost of the orders.

Hi.
Does it matter?
You always have tracking numbers and can find out where you're packages are.

shipments, they may use different carriers for each one.

But here’s another dirty little secret about UPS, Fedex and USPS
shipping that you guys may not be aware of. If you live in an
apartment complex, these three delivery carriers will no longer
deliver large packages directly to your door, even if you have paid a
pretty penny out of your own pocket for delivery. Instead, their
drivers now usually leave packages with the super or building manager
in the basement or other central location. The problem with this new
policy is that if the super isn’t around to sign for delivery or
place the packages in a secure location, the driver will simply leave
them outside his door where anyone can walk by and steal them. I
have complained numerous times to UPS customer service about this
practice, but to no avail. Whenever I order stuff that is delivered
by UPS or Fedex or the USPS, the driver now always leaves the package
with my super. But if he is not around to sign for delivery, the
driver just leaves the package outside his door where anyone can walk
by and take it for themselves. Fortunately, I have not yet had one of
my deliveries stolen, but I am still very unhappy over this
lackadaisical attitude on the part of these delivery carriers.

I don't see how Amazon does the free shipping even at that price. I
guess the shippers give the big shippers a big discount. I sent a 13
pound package by UPS recently and it cost me $37, much more than the
cost of the contents of the package.

Yes I seen that this morning on the news. I am a prime member so
it might not affect me so much.

But this would not be unusual as things is slowing down on buying
and so you would expect this. I don’t think they had or even thought
of the blind people when doing this . It is just good business sense.
If you not selling as much you cannot afford to cut the price of
shipping or the price of things just go up as people is now not going
to be buying as much. JST

Yikes! Imagine my horror when I visited Amazon.com this morning
to discover that they have raised their minimum order size to qualify
for free shipping from $35 to $49 for non-Prime members. This is a
whopping 40% increase, and makes it more difficult for those of us
blind consumers who live on limited incomes to now shop there. It’s
bad enough that Amazon keeps tinkering with its web site to the
detriment of screen reader users like us. But now, to add insult to
injury, they have now made it more difficult to get free shipping. A
pox on Jeff Bezos and all his ancestors!!! LOL!!

I used to live in Tucson, AZ. Of course, most people who don't know it's
supposed to be pronounced like 2-sahn will pronounce it either as tuckson

because of the way it's spelled. At least Eloquence says it correctly. Of

course earlier synths butchered it as expected.

I don’t know any way of signing out of Siri, but I have signed out of my account, did the reboot thing; nothing works. I’m beginning to think this is a bug with the 6SPlus.

Have you did this sign out of Siri and also take all apps out of the app switcher and reboot the device and then sign back in with Siri and then once signed in with her then back out of settings and try her out.  Now it might take a little bit for her to understand your voice especially if you have some kind of accent to it as she is starting all over on the new device and has to relearn your voice.

Thursday I upgraded my 5S to a 6SPlus. I got everything going except that Siri won’t take most of my commands. For instance, I was able to tell Siri to call someone in my contacts and he would do it. With this new phone, it will start out to call the person; then it will tell me it can’t do it. If I ask it to open one of my apps, Siri will tell me I don’t have such and such app when it is there and I have to find it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks bunches.

I'm thinking I may have to call Apple to fix this. It tells me I don't have apps when I ask it to open them as well. Someone from another list had the same problem and she had to erase her phone and do a restore again.

We have an iPhone 4S. Not long ago, I asked Siri, "what's the temperature in Sanford, North Carolina."

She said, "see what I found on the net for you."

We were riding down the road in the car. I waited a minute and said "well, the S, as in Sam word you."

She replied, "I wouldn't talk to you like that."

My daughter-in-law laughed and asked, that even though it was a "machine," did I feel bad about it. I said I told her "I'm sorry." It would annoy me though, when she'd tell me "here's what I found on the net for you."

That would be frustrating to have her not make calls for you. By the time you go into Favorites or Contacts, and get to a contact, well, it's a hassle to be sure. It could be that if you can get the phone back to the store, they could check it out for you to see if they can make an adjustment.

Re: winamp question

Gene

Hi folks.  I have a jaws question (I use Jaws 16) that is bugging me.  I've just got my PC back after having a new motherboard and a new power supply fitted.  In installing jaws I notice that when I enter a folder it doesn't give me the correct number of files, or folders in a particular folder.  For example I have an audio book drive and I know there is thirteen and a half thousand books in there but when I open the drive/folder it will say the first file/folder is one of 19 and if i go down it gives me different values.  So if it says the first file is one of 19 and then I go down another 18 files/folders then it should read 19 of 19 but it will say something like 36 of 54.  I've gone into the view menu and checked the list option but it has made no difference.  Does anybody know how to get Jaws to announce how to pronounce the correct value such as 5,390 of 10,460 or 6,243 of 13,498 etc please.  Your help would be valued.  Walter.

but you have to be sure you have one that sounds tolerable.

I don't know if you are old enough to remember when news actualities, those
are the reports when they record something said by another reporter or
somebody somewhere else, when they were recorded from over seas, had to be
carried over shortwave radio. I think that's the way long distance calls
were done, too. Anyway, my point was, you could hear the report fading in
and out and all, depending on how good the signal was. Well, now, when I
listen to people call up stations using a cellphone, it sounds like we are
harkening back to the days of the forties or fifties. Some of the cheap
landlines sound terrible, too, like the person is talking into a cup and
it's hard to understand them. Pam.

The clarity and quality in sound with a landline is so much better than a
wireless phone. Also when I talk with friends who are using a wireless
phone, they are constantly fading out, sounding muffled and so often I
have
to ask them to repeat what they have just said because I missed part of
their conversation.
