I apologize, as I gave incorrect instructions. If the computer is muted, after you enter sndvold in the run dialog and press enter, tab once to go to the mute checkbox and press enter to uncheck it.

My life partner has had this experience of her machine being mysteriously muted a few times. What I have found when this has happened is that the volume was set to zero.
So, at least in the instances

Maybe, but that isn’t usually the problem. Also, often if sound is muted, you need to unmute it, not increase the volume. It is for reasons like this that everyone who doesn’t have a Braille

press the windows key plus the letter r
this will open the run dialog
type sndvol and hit return
