I think I paid $249 Canadian for mine. It has four gig of ram which is standard, at least it was when I got mine a little over a year ago, and 64 gig of storage. Keyboard has a nice feel with lots of distinction between keys. I should really get off my high horse and learn the dam thing. 😁

I'm going to second what George said. I got myself a Chromebook a couple of weeks ago and I love it. If someone isn't set on getting a Windows10 machine, A Chromebook might be enough to accomplish certain things.
Second, you don't have to spend that much on a decent machine.

I was going to suggest that as well however I'm not sure how good the low vision features are and she said her Mom could benefit from magnification. I have a little acer chrome book here. I haven't used it much, I bought it mainly to play with but have not much time yet. I'm not sure how well the magnification settings work, but for someone who wants to do basic web navigation, net flix and other basic tasks a chrome book is certainly a viable option, especially if the user is not married to the idea of one operating system.

Hi Gene,

I always do what you described. I never got an installation dialogue before from Send Space.  What used to happen is I would get a 'bark' screen to download the latest and greatest whatever and I of course would exit the 'bark' screen.

It is very important that those offering material via Send Space provide this information when they send a download link.

thanks Mike! Windows Defender did the same. I then had to outsmart it
and unchecked one item in the settings unzipped it anew, and was able

stubbornly locked folder!

My thnks to everyone who made the installation files available!

Its important that when you are a free Send Space user, you shouldn't
directly activate the download button. Doing so will show you
advertising
and some of it may be hacked. The hacked advertising may try to place
malware on your machine.

Right click the button, its really a link that looks like a button, and
use
save target as, save link as, or whatever your screen-reader calls that
feature. The file will download and you won't be shown advertising.

Need basic Windows Laptop Ideas

Lisa Belville

Hi, all.

My sister and I want to get our mom a very basic Windows laptop for Christmas. She's used Windows, but back in the XP days, and she hasn't used a PC since then.

I'm looking for machines that are relatively inexpensive, like under $300 and are reputable brands with minimum specs-- She'll just do basic web surfing, on line shopping, Netflix, and maybe some YouTube and video calling.

I'm looking for something with a full size keyboard, otherwise, we can provide a wireless Logitech one.

I really don't want to pay more for one with an SSD because she's not going to be a power user by any means.

Also, mom is sighted, but would probably benefit from the magnification capability in Windows.  She doesn't need any other specialized software.

TIA for the thoughts.

I don't know what to do. A couple of years ago, I updated to the latest version, but they didn't like the password I told them Kurzweil gave me.
They said that that wasn't the kind of password they gave, never mind the fact that it is in braille, sent to me from them. I guess this person I spoke to was relatively new in the company, so only knows the newer ones.
So, they insisted on giving me a new password. Unfortunately, I don't have it written down anywhere. I understand that there is nobody to talk to on the phone anymore about my problem. I need to put it in this computer, but it seems I am stumped. Does anybody have a solution? Pam.

Hi Laz and All,

Here's a direct Dropbox download link and this file is absolutely clean.

Stay safe and take care.  Mike.

Unfortunatley Windows Defender announced this file wasn't virus free
and deleted it. So if anyone has a clean file or the portable version
please share it.

Stay safe,

Laz

Re: Seeking accessible TV recommendations

I have the 43 inch Toshiba amazon fire tv. It works quite well and you can set it up without sighted assistance right out of the box.

Apologies for being so ignorant.  The wife and I want to extricate ourselves from the $200 per month cable bill by cutting the cord.  Are there any Smart televisions on the market with good voice guidance on which apps like Netflix, Hulu and Youtube TV work well?  We probably will not be interested in a Roku box, Amazon Fire TV, or Apple TV.  We are looking for a TV that has voice guidance, and the apps that we want.  Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

When I updated mine from version 13 to 14 it was $150 Canadian, or there abouts.

The latest version of an off the shelf o c r program will not be more accurate than the current version of Kurzweil 1000; both programs use the same or very similar recognition engines.
So the question is how much more would it cost to upgrade your k1000?

I have v12 but would upgrade to the latest version. I want to use it with win10.

Hi all.

I have an older copy of kurzweil1000 that i haven't been using because i haven't really needed OCR software. However, the time has come that i would like to have a good OCR program again for reading books and such.
So i'm curious what people think, is it worth upgrading kurzweil to the latest version? or is there better OCR software out there now?

I want something for a pc, not a mobile device.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi. This article from HowToGeek discusses several utilities for unlocking files.
