Contact HP. Give them your laptop model and serial number. They can advise how much RAM it can use.

 

I upgraded this laptop from eight to 16 GB, does not seem to speed it up much but should.

Depending upon the age of your laptop, it may be advisable to scrap it and buy a new one.

 

Have a Dell Mobile Workstation I loaded up with 64 GB of RAM. Figure that should let it survive several updates to Windows without running out of RAM.

Hi,

How can I go about figuring out how much physical RAM my HP laptop can hold? I know the motherboard determines this, but do not know how to find this information out.

Currently, my laptop is very, very slow, as a member of this group can attest to (we connected to each other's computers through a tandem feature and he even commented on the slowness.

This makes learning Jaws and windows 10 very frustrating and tedious.

I would think using the disk might save some time.  Others who use JAWS may wish to comment.  I haven't used JAWS to any extent for years and I'm speculating about the following:
When you install a new full version of JAWS, it installs a version of I believe its Fine Reader to work with its OCR feature.  This is a large enough installation that the download may take a fair amount of time.  On the disk, the Fine Reader version should already be there, thus saving time, perhaps enough to amount to something unless you have a fast connection. 
 
Also, on a list recently, I saw a message that all the instructional information is installed from the Cd, whereas if you download JAWS, you have to install whatever you want separately.

I don't know if this can be done because I would expect scanners to have different procedures, but if I sent the brand and model to the list, could someone send instructions for programming that specific scanners as to where controls are and what the procedure is? 
 
I don't know if this will be possible, if it can be done; I just want to know if it can be or if the person might need sighted assistance to become familiar with the controls and how to use them.

The scanner may have come with a CD with a programming program; there are freeware programming programs on the Radio Reference web site.

This does not mean you will not find technicians who will modify the scanner to receive such, just that if you are caught doing so, your friend could be in serious trouble with the law.

Yes, people shouldn't buy the cheapest computer.  One way to proceed is to tell the list what you will use the computer for and if you anticipate other uses in the future and people may recommend specifications or specific computers. 
 
Also, there are buying guides that give general information about what to look for, depending on how you are going to use the computer.  I may send a link to one tomorrow.

you that a word you just typed was corrected but you prefer to use the word as you originally typed it, you can navigate back to the item, press ALT+SHIFT+F10,

Note: When typing in the body of a new message in Outlook, JAWS can alert you when text is AutoCorrected, however, the context menu for changing AutoCorrect
options is only accessible using a mouse. Microsoft currently only allows the ALT+SHIFT+F10 command to be used in Word.

I have seen people buy computers that are way under powered to much,
then they end up having to buy a new computer with in a year or two.
Better to do it right the first time.

There is probably some ASCII numeric representation, but I'm not sure what it is.  If you are using Word, there is a setting in Options where you can turn
on smart quotes or curly quotes.  That way open quotation marks slant down and to the left while close quotation marks slope down and to the right.
I think I can find that option, but if it is not Word you are working with, that won't be much help.

For instance, I know it's possible to change the pitch of a specific part on a certain text or whatever.

Hi all,

In my experience, after using the CD to install Jaws, it will come up and say updates are available do you want to download and install them?

The CD should start automatically when it is placed in the drive, but if it doesn't look through the files and find the install .exe file and run that.

I really should have done a better job in processing your last message before I wrote my last response. You said that you received a CD in the mail. Is it the CD for JAWS 2019? If it is and if the process of downloading a file is too daunting then you could just insert the CD into your computer's CD drive and install JAWS 2019 from that disk. However, my guess is that the CD may contain a slightly older version of JAWS 2019 which was released in October and the link that I pointed to in my last message contains a more recent version of 2019 which was released in December. If you feel that you're able to download and install the file from Freedom Scientific's Web site it might be better to do that since you'll be starting out with the very latest version.

First, you can get to the JAWS Downloads page <https://www.freedomscientific.com/Downloads/JAWS>; from the above link. Look for the link which is labeled • "JAWS 2019.1812.49 - December 2018" and select that, which will cause your browser to start the process of downloading what is, essentially, the installer for JAWS 2019. Exactly what you will hear will vary, depending on which Web browser you are using but please don't hesitate to ask us if you run into a snag during the download process.

Once the download process has completed you will find the installer in the Downloads folder of your computer, with a name similar to j19-1812-49. Press enter on this file and it will begin the process of actually installing JAWS 2019 onto your computer.

When JAWS is installed it will not erase JAWS 2018. You're free to delete it but it might be better to keep 2018 on your computer for a short while, unless you're really pressed for space. One reason for keeping 2018 is that you can easily go back to that version just in case version 2019 has issues or problems you might encounter.

I see this kind of statement made off and on by different people and it
isn't correct. If you can afford a 1000 dollar computer and you only need
500 dollars worth of power, you are throwing away 500 dollars. And buying
more ram than you will need is a waste of money. These days, most people
get 8gb of RAM. You could put in much more, perhaps 16 or 32gb of RAM. If
you aren't going to use more than 8GB of RAM, it doesn't make sense to buy
more. If you use 8GB of RAM in general use, you may need more. If you
generally use four or five or six GB of RAM, it is unlikely you will need
more than 8. Knowing specifically what someone will use a computer for and
if they anticipate using it differently in future are ways to determine what
someone needs.

With the improvements to UIA support in Office 365 versions higher than  16.0.10400, JAWS can now immediately alert you when text is AutoCorrected as you
edit documents in Word or when composing emails in Outlook. By default, when you are typing in word or the body of an email and you press the SPACEBAR
after a word that is AutoCorrected, JAWS plays a pop sound. In addition, if you stop typing, so that speech is not interrupted, JAWS says "Auto Correct"
followed by the corrected word including the spelling.
 
As you navigate a document, JAWS can also announce if Word has automatically corrected the current text. You can then press ALT+SHIFT+F10 to open a context
menu that allows you to undo the correction, stop automatically correcting that word, or change your AutoCorrect options. For instance, if JAWS alerts
you that a word you just typed was corrected but you prefer to use the word as you originally typed it, you can navigate back to the item, press ALT+SHIFT+F10,
and choose "Change back."
 
Note: When typing in the body of a new message in Outlook, JAWS can alert you when text is AutoCorrected, however, the context menu for changing AutoCorrect
options is only accessible using a mouse. Microsoft currently only allows the ALT+SHIFT+F10 command to be used in Word.
 
If you do not want to be notified when text is AutoCorrected when you press the SPACEBAR, open Quick Settings (INSERT+V) from Word and turn off the "Spelling
buzzer on mistyped words" option. Note that this will also turn off the buzzer sound that is heard to indicate a misspelled word.
 
If you do not want to have JAWS alert you to corrected words as you navigate a document, open Quick Settings from Word and turn off the AutoCorrect Detection

Support for Co-Authoring Documents in Word 365
 
If a shared document is opened by multiple users, JAWS can now do the following:

Hi Ron,

 

The auto update feature only works for the major running version.  So for example if you are running 2019 and 2020 comes out the auto update won't work.  It will work for minor versions of 2019 or 2020 but not upgrade from 2019 to 2020.

 

If I remember correctly a merge  feature was introduced in V18.

If it is and if the process of downloading a file is too daunting then you could just insert the CD into your computer's CD drive and install JAWS 2019 from that disk. However, my guess is that the CD may contain a slightly older version of JAWS 2019 which was released in October and the link that I pointed to in my last message contains a more recent version of 2019 which was released in December. If you feel that you're able to download and install the file from Freedom Scientific's Web site it might be better to do that since you'll be starting out with the very latest version.
