Instead of jaws saying 9 2 0 0 0, I'd like for it to say 92 thousand..
If memory serves, if I change it to some, wouldn't it say 92 thousand but
when it encounters something like 1-4, it will read it as a fraction or a

What's new in this release:

Enhancements in JAWS 2021.2103.174 (April 2021)

The following is a list of improvements made between the February 2021 release and the April 2021 update.

Voice Assistant
list of 6 items
• By default, Voice Assistant listens for the word "sharky" before accepting any commands. However, to help decrease the possibility of starting Voice
Assistant when you didn't intend to, you now have the option to change the wake up phrase to "hey sharky" instead. You can change this from the JAWS Utility
Menu by choosing Voice Assistant, and then selecting Settings. We strongly recommend changing the wake word to "Hey Sharky."
• It is no longer necessary to say the word "toggle" when turning on or off features including Audio Ducking, Screen Shade, Speech On Demand, or the Virtual
Cursor. For example, saying "Sharky, Audio Ducking" now turns this feature on or off depending on the current state.
• When changing the speech rate, you now only need to say "Sharky, Voice Rate" followed by a number. For example, "Sharky, Voice Rate 50" sets the speech
rate to 50 percent. You can even just say the number, and the speech rate will change appropriately.
• To launch the JAWS Dictionary Manager, you now only need to say "Sharky, Dictionary."
• Voice Assistant now immediately stops listening once you have spoken a command. This helps in situations where someone else may begin talking which could
cause Voice Assistant to not process the command correctly.
• Voice commands that generate speech output now work as expected even if JAWS and Fusion are set to Speech On Demand.
list end

PlaceMarkers Now Available in Excel Workbooks

You can now use Placemarkers to mark cells in an Excel workbook similar to how they are used in Word documents. The following commands are now supported:

list of 4 items
• Set a PlaceMarker on the current cell, press CTRL+WINDOWS+K. Only one PlaceMarker can be set per worksheet.
• Move to the cell PlaceMarker on the current worksheet, press ALT+WINDOWS+K. To move to a cell PlaceMarker on another worksheet, first press CTRL+PAGE
UP or CTRL+PAGE DOWN to move to the specific worksheet.
• List all cell PlaceMarkers in the workbook, press ALT+CTRL+WINDOWS+K.
• Select all cells between the cell PlaceMarker and your current location, press INSERT+SPACEBAR followed by M.
list end

Microsoft Teams
list of 4 items
• Updated the JAWS INSERT+W help to now include all currently available Teams keystrokes.
• Resolved an issue in Teams where messages were double speaking in chat pop out windows.
• If you press CTRL+PERIOD to display all Teams commands, JAWS now also reminds you about using INSERT+W as an easier way to access this information.
• Removed the ALT+T command as you can now use the Teams keystroke, CTRL+3, to move focus to the Teams and Channels tree view.
list end

Support for Reading Comments and Other Revision Types in Goodle Docs

In Google Docs, JAWS and Fusion now indicate the following as you navigate documents:

list of 3 items
• Text that includes comments. When JAWS indicates you are in a section of text that has a comment, press ALT+SHIFT+APOSTROPHE to read the associated comment
including any replies. Press ALT+SHIFT+APOSTROPHE twice quickly to activate the Virtual Cursor and move focus to the comment details page. Press ESC to
return to the document.
• Text that has been inserted or deleted.
• Text that is highlighted or has been called out for some reason, such as a section of text in a document currently being edited by another user. JAWS
says "mark" and "end mark" as you move in and out of this highlighted text.
list end

If you prefer to not receive announcements for one or more of these items, open Settings Center and turn off Comment announcement, Inserted text announcement,
Deleted text announcement, or Marked text announcement. All of these options are located in the Proofing group under Text Processing.

New Installation Command Line Option for Disabling External Services

Starting with the April 2021 releases of JAWS, ZoomText, and Fusion, when performing a full install, IT professionals and network administrators can add
the /DisableExternalServices command line option to turn off all product features that reach out to the internet. For example:
c:\\InstallerPackage.exe /DisableExternalServices

Once JAWS, ZoomText, or Fusion is installed after using this command line option, features that are no longer available for use include Research It, FS
Support Tool, Voice Assistant, Error Reporting, JAWS Tandem, Picture Smart, and Anonymous Usage Data Collection. Note that using the software in a remote
access environment will still be available. Turning off features that connect to the internet is especially important for installs in secure locations
such as banks, hospitals, and government agencies.

For more information, run the setup package with the /Help command line option.

Other Changes
list of 13 items
• When joining a Zoom meeting and you are prompted to enter your name, addressed an issue where JAWS was not reading the name already in the edit field
if the screen resolution was set higher than 100 percent, which is common on most modern laptops. This caused users to enter their name again which in
turn caused it to be read multiple times in meetings.
• In Excel, resolved a reported issue where JAWS was saying "entering table" when pressing F2 to edit a cell's contents.
• When navigating a worksheet in Excel using the mouse in JAWS or Fusion, cell contents are now read first followed by the cell coordinates.
• In Microsoft Word, when encountering text in a document that is both a heading and a link, resolved a reported issue where JAWS was not indicating the
link.
• Addressed a reported issue where JAWS was unexpectedly displaying an error message in Outlook when pressing ALT+SHIFT+L from the body of a new message
to list misspelled words.
• Addressed a reported issue where JAWS was not reading as expected when reviewing a message in GMail and focus landed on text that was part of a link.
• Starting with the April 2021 updates of JAWS and Fusion, Grammar detection in Settings Center is on by default for all applications except Word and Outlook.
This enabled JAWS and Fusion to automatically announce grammatical errors in web-based editors like Google Docs. See the following
TSN
 for more details.
• Updated the descriptions in JAWS Commands Search (INSERT+SPACEBAR, J) for the Append Selected Text to Clipboard (INSERT+WINDOWS+C) and View Clipboard
Text (INSERT+SPACEBAR, C) commands to help clarify that these features are especially useful when you only want to copy and paste text without extra formatting.
• Resolved a reported issue where JAWS was not indicating the state of check boxes in the BARD Express app in braille.
• Resolved an issue with selecting text in console windows at high resolution settings.
• Removed the Business Search Research It lookup source due to changes to the website which no longer allows us to retrieve information.
• Removed the ability to use JAWS to customize message lists in Mozilla Thunderbird based on changes in the way list views are presented which caused this
feature to no longer work as expected in this application.
• Turkish is now included as an available language option during a full install.
list end

Re: Texting using the PC

Mike B.

Hi Lisa,

Depending on where your friends live probably determines who or what cell carrier towers they use.
Featured snippet from the web
Straight Talk is a type of carrier known as an MVNO (mobile virtual network operator), which means that it doesn't run or own a wireless network. Instead,
it purchases the right to use towers from AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, and Sprint.

TracFone is the same as Straight Talk but, they use service including Verizon Wireless, AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile US, Sprint Corporation, and U.S. Cellular.
So, it would be hard to know what domain to tell you to use without knowing their phone numbers and running the phone numbers through a cell number identification type service.  Try the link below.

As you may or may not know, it is possible to use a PC or Mack to text
someone to their telephone.  In the past a listing of all SMS gateways
has been referenced.  However this page has not been updated since 2007
and some information is out of date.

Here is a site that allows you to type in an individual
phone number and get the Free SMS gateway address.  This makes it a lot
easier.  All you need is the person's phone number and this web page.
Type it in the search box, click the search button and the proper sms gateway beginning with the ten digit phone number will be displayed.  Tip, use Google Chrome to solve the captcha if one appears.

Brydge makes keyboards for the Surface tablets, both the Surface Go

Hi, all. I need to use my PC to text someone using either Tracphone or Straight talk as their cell carrier. does anyone know how to do this or is it still possible to text from a PC? I know I can do this with Verizon, but uh, my phone is having issues, and the PC is my only option.

Thanks

I totally agree here. I have a surface 5 and the type cover is terrible on a lap gut very nice on a hard surface. To solve this problem I also purchase the Bridge keyboard which pretty much turns your surface into a surface laptop. It’s a great option but rather expensive as I recall.

Warmest regards

I think the type cover works very well on a solid surface, and this coming from a picky typer. I do see what Heather means about trying to use the type cover on your lap though. Brydge sells directly and also via Amazon. They make keyboards for both Surface tablets as well as iPads.--Joe

Brydge makes keyboards for the Surface tablets, both the Surface Go
and the Surface Pro. Microsoft's own keyboard is not great for typing
on your lap, but Brydge makes a sturdy case that locks onto the bottom
of the tablet and effectively turns the tablet into a laptop. I'll be
writing a review of the case on my blog shortly. Thanks for reminding
me to make that a higher priority on my personal list.

You should also be able to find draft view in the view portion of the ribbons. Just go to view and tab to see if draft mode is there, if it is, hit spacebar to check it and hit enter.

I tried finding draft mode, but it wasn’t an option in the status bar.  I’m using the latest Microsoft word.

I experienced this recently. I was editing a document and it was skipping pages. I remember when editing, one should put the document in draft mode. So, I hit F6 twice and hear status bar, tab until I hear draft, press spacebar to check it, F6 twice more and hear document pane to get back into the document, then I hit escape. I am using Outlook 2010.

Hello all, I’m having a problem with Microsoft Word skipping pages.  I can either arrow down and get odd or even pages, but can’t view both.  This is really difficult when selecting between two pages, as when I’m using Shift down arrow, it skips from page one to page three, or from page two to page four.  Is there a way I can stop this happening?  Thank you.

By acquisitions, I meant tech acquisitions like these. Sure, you don't see that in other industries a whole lot.

Not necessarily.  There are all sorts of products that continue even under the old name of the product, not the brand, but the old name after acquisitions.  A lot of the processed and frozen foods, for example, have been aquired.  Orio cookies, )(spelling) was aquired when Nabisco (spelling) was aquired.

Ultimately MS could kill Nuance, which it will probably do in the end. that's usually how acquisitions work.

I’ll look at the petition but why do you consider it important that Eloquence isn’t maintained?  It does what users want it to do and it does it very well.  And you can purchase Eloquence for use with NVDA and with other programs.

Hi,

As some of you may know, Microsoft acquired Nuance. I started this

petition as ETI-Eloquence isn't maintained and is used by a lot of the

blind community. If you would like to sign It, the link is

Feel free to pass this along to as many people as possible.

If you are comparing the magic keyboard which can be use for iPad Pro series.
Its a good build and it type well even on my lap.
It's like it lift the 12.9" iPad up in the air and it doesn't shake much. for some people, a flat surface will be a better choice.
I would agree, Microsoft's cover keyboard is not as good as the other third party or even if you would compare with apple series.

Hello, I want to finally find a new laptop after almost 8 years, that is the last time I went and purcheased 1.

So I like the surface set up but, when I got it, I did not like how it sets up. It seens the screen is to heavy for the keyboard and it did not sit well unless you had a table handy. Are all the surfaces like this? I thought it would have the similar set up like my i-pad which I could type on my lap and the screen on the i-pad holds well. I am wondering if the magnets on the surface are not as strong as the ones off my i-pad?

It just seemed that my surface was to top heavy and it always wanted to flop over. So I set it back.

So someone told me to look in to a traditional laptop set up

But before I do this, is there a surface that has a better setup?

I liked the lightweight aspects of the surface along with the quickness of the surface.

Thanks Heather
