You don't have to switch to html.  You will be a better Windows user if you try this using plain text.  There are two attachments in the message.  Select the one you want in the list.  Then save it.  Before, you saved the wrong attac hment.  In HTML, there is onley one attachment,  In plain text, if the writer has added a  attachment, you will often see two.  Do you have your Windows set to tell you file extensions?  When you are in file explorer and you are up and down arrowing. do you hear name of file then txt, docx, mp3, etc or do you just hear the name?  Having Windows announce extensions is very important as a blind user.

attachment issue was the exact same. I remember that used
to, there would be two attachments or more, and I would
Arrow then open. Only one shows, and no matter what I do, it

I don't know to what extent you wish to pursue this.  Here
are my thoughts after seeing the entire thread over the last
few days:
If the message isn't private, you could forward it to
someone off list and see if that person can open it.  Also,
are the attachments you can't open all of the same
extension?

Regarding not being able to open the attachments from the
keyboard, I doubt this has anything to do with JAWS but that
needs to be tested.  Opening attachments has nothing to do
with what a screen-reader does.  Why only certain
attachments, which is why I asked about the extension?  I'm
trying to see if there is a commonality.  Also, are you
reading mail as html or as plain text?  You said that when
you saved the attachment, you got a copy of the e-mails.
That causes me to think that you are reading mail as plain
text.  If you do that, you will often see an html attachment
of the message content.  In your case, if you are reading
mail as plain text, you should have seen two attachments.
There should have been a list in the save attachments
dialog.  You would have up and down arrowed to the
attachment you wanted to save, then saved it.  Or at least,
that's what you do in save attachments in programs I've
worked with.  Try saving the attachment again, tab around
the entire save attachments dialog and see if there is a
save attachments list.  Up and down arrow in the list.  Do
you see more than one attachment?  If not, try left and
right arrowing.  There may be something going on that is
keeping you from opening certain attachments.  But as yet,
we have so little information about the nature of the
attachments that we can form no hypothesis about what, if
anything, they may have in common and what possible remedy,
if any, we might propose.

Furthermore, this one, I have copied, because it is

Hi all,

No, it's not the context menu!  It's the alt-f, some call it
backstage, menu!  The context menu will not do what you want
it to do.  There is nothing wrong with Jaws except that it's
top heavy with so many add-ons and junk it's hardly
recognizable as a screen reader.  Jaws is reading exactly
what is there.  <smiling>  In this case it's behaving
correctly.

If you want to open the attachment, merely do a shift-tab
when in the message and when it says attachments, use the
right arrow to see the list and open the attachment by
pressing enter on it.

If you want to save the attachment, do an alt-f and go down
to save-attachment and follow the prompt.  If you don't
change it, it will save the attachment in documents which is
under This PC in win10.

It sure doesn't help if you get wrong information.  Again,
it's *not* the context menu, it's the alt-f to go to

HI Cristobal

I have to thank you for this, as I wouldn’t have ever
thought of this one meaning paring a headphone to the phone
to bring back Voice over. I have been having similar
problems with my phone recently as well, and I was quite
concerned especially if the phone came back on by its self,
I would have to enter my security code, and I never have to
do that except only when I do a soft or a hard reset.
Although, I will try the paring headphone method next time!
I also have been having an issue with my phone 6 with the
latest update when doing a search in Apple music. When I do
a search in Apple music as I have done for at least 3 years
rather using dictation or the on screen keyboard, Voiceover
would read my request, but when I would tap on it, either
Voiceover would stop talking, or Voiceover would just ignore
when I would tap on the screen. I called Apple tech
support, and they looked at the screen I had open, and said
this is what they call a Voiceover coding problem. What
they said that means is Voiceover is reading the screen, but
just not in the order it should be reading. What that
basically means is Voiceover is not reading properly what is
on the screen.

The Apple rep also said he has seen this only 2 times, so he
will report it to the Apple engineer. To be continued! I
always say when people have issues with their Apple phones,
they should call Apple to let them know, because if no one
calls, they will never know, and nothing will be done.

Lots of luck!

Hello list,

So recently I’ve been dealing with an issue that’s been
happening more and more. While using my iPhone SE, be it
dictating something or just regular navigating, all sound
will just stop. No Voiceover, no system sounds, no Siri,
nothing. Not even flicking the mute switch on the side of
the phone. Not even the little vibration thing it’s supposed
to do.

Anyway, the first few times this happened, I was worried
that my phone bricked or died or something. I soon
discovered that I could get sound back by paring some
headphones or plugging in headphones with the jack. VO would
be right there as if nothing happened.

Anyway, now when this occurs, I know to not freak out, but
rather just pare some headphones to get Voiceover back and
then disconnect the same headphones and then press the
volume up button on the side of my phone and VO will soon
start blasting out of the speaker. That and the vibration
will come back on the mute switch if I flick it back and
forth.

This was pretty rare and I figured it was just one of those
random whatever things that happens when you’re dealing with
tech, but for the past ten or so days to two weeks, it’s
been happening nearly every day and sometimes multiple times
a day. ON a side note, I’ve also been getting the power off
screen without pressing and holding down the power button. I
don’t know if I’m pressing some other button/tap combination
to bring it up, but I don’t recall it just showing up like
that before.

Has anyone else dealt with this issue? I checked my phone’s
battery health and it’s saying that it’s at 94% and is still
supporting peak performance for whatever that’s worth. I was
thinking of taking it in later this year to take advantage
of the battery replacement program since it’s going on two
years that I’ve had it so I don’t know if this may have
anything to do with it.

Running the latest iOS 11.4.1.

Thanks,

Cristobal

HI Cristobal

I have to thank you for this, as I wouldn’t have ever thought of this one meaning paring a headphone to the phone to bring back Voice over.  I have been having similar problems with my phone recently as well, and I was quite concerned especially if the phone came back on by its self, I would have to enter my security code, and I never have to do that except only when I do a soft or a hard reset.  Although, I will try the paring headphone method next time!  I also have been having an issue with my phone 6 with the latest update when doing a search in Apple music.  When I do a search in Apple music as I have done for at least 3 years rather using dictation or the on screen keyboard,  Voiceover would read my request, but when I would tap on it, either Voiceover would stop talking, or Voiceover would just ignore when I would tap on the screen.  I called Apple tech support, and they looked at the screen I had open, and said this is what they call a Voiceover coding problem.  What they said that means is Voiceover is reading the screen, but just not in the order it should be reading.  What that basically means is Voiceover is not reading properly what is on the screen.

The Apple rep also said he has seen this only 2 times, so he will report it to the Apple engineer.  To be continued!  I always say when people have issues with their Apple phones, they should call Apple to let them know, because if no one calls, they will never know, and nothing will be done.

Lots of luck!

Janet

Hello list,

So recently I’ve been dealing with an issue that’s been happening more and more. While using my iPhone SE, be it dictating something or just regular navigating, all sound will just stop. No Voiceover, no system sounds, no Siri, nothing. Not even flicking the mute switch on the side of the phone. Not even the little vibration thing it’s supposed to do.

Anyway, the first few times this happened, I was worried that my phone bricked or died or something. I soon discovered that I could get sound back by paring some headphones or plugging in headphones with the jack. VO would be right there as if nothing happened.

Anyway, now when this occurs, I know to not freak out, but rather just pare some headphones to get Voiceover back and then disconnect the same headphones and then press the volume up button on the side of my phone and VO will soon start blasting out of the speaker. That and the vibration will come back on the mute switch if I flick it back and forth.

This was pretty rare and I figured it was just one of those random whatever things that happens when you’re dealing with tech, but for the past ten or so days to two weeks, it’s been happening nearly every day and sometimes multiple times a day. ON a side note, I’ve also been getting the power off screen without pressing and holding down the power button. I don’t know if I’m pressing some other button/tap combination to bring it up, but I don’t recall it just showing up like that before.

Has anyone else dealt with this issue? I checked my phone’s battery health and it’s saying that it’s at 94% and is still supporting peak performance for whatever that’s worth. I was thinking of taking it in later this year to take advantage of the battery replacement program since it’s going on two years that I’ve had it so I don’t know if this may have anything to do with it.

Running the latest iOS 11.4.1.

Thanks,

Cristobal

That makes sense and I should have thought of that! Darn! Sometimes I think it makes more practical sense for a blind person, and many sighted people to just on a mobile device and use that as their primary computer. Mobile devices, especially tablets seem to be more versatile with more accessibility features than your standard Windows computer.

Can’t you listen to Bard books on a computer? I know you can download them,
copy them to a flash drive and listen to them on the Talking Book player. I
thought I read that you can listen to them on a computer if you don’t have a
mobile device.

A chromebook isn't exactly a computer. It's sort of a weird hybrid between
a tablet and a laptop. And you can run android apps on it.

Nope, you can't. There is currently no decryption method for windows or mac. I presume they did it this way so you can't pirate them lol.
