Gene,

There is no 30 dollar sound card, nothing of quality worth mentioning. The fios dac is about 75 dollars, and is as cheap as a dac goes. The zen  has a better price/performance ratio, and is 129. These aren't high end dacs iether, there are several near 200 dollars, several around 300-400, and a few above 2500.

Hi Heather,

As they recommended, I think you should get the FIO or Zen Dac, which
don't process audio, which output audio purely.

Dear Heather,

I have talked to the technical product team and we got the following reply :

"Recalling that we had some cases whereby the text to speech application
gives garbled sound on the Sound Blaster Z after some time. We are sadly
not able to confirm if our audio devices support text to speech
applications.

As audio processing may affect pure voice audio, it is recommended to get a
USB DAC that does not provide any audio processing.

Most of our USB DAC have some audio processing on the driver. Therefore they
are not recommended for your desired usage.

You may want to check out USB DAC from other manufacturers like FiiO,
AudioQuest, Audioengine that do not provide audio effects.

We are truly sorry , that we dont have anything suitable in our product

If you are having any other inquiries now or later on, please contact us

I would avoid the creative ones. There are reports online that the

the enhancements would mess with NVDA or JAWS, and be annoying.

This does fix the issue but like I said, every major update
re-installs the Real Tech drivers again and this process starts

I have never heard anywear that you can brake the Zen dac drivers  Apparently are optional. There is apparently a firmware update that is optional though. And it is probably  audiophiles comparing it to thousand dollar dacs about the hissing. I have read several reputable reviews on websites  and none of them mention anything like that. There is actually a power adapter apparently you can purchase, which is optional.

As for your media and jaws, you would  just use it like any other soundcard, which it is, minus the audio processing.

On 6/16/2020 9:37 PM, heather albright wrote:
I am trying to get more info. I am trying to find the contact form for Zen Dac off amazon. From the reviews, you have to download drivers and a couple of them said they broke the Zen Dac and you had to find the older drivers! I watched a youtube and it said it had some hissing sounds. I like the youtube video, he described it and it runns off your usb and it does not come with a power ac adaptor. I did not see where you could have more than one thing going threw it at a time. So how would I put media and jaws threw it at the same time! I did not find much about the FIO. I saw something about the audio engine having something but, cant find their contact form off amazon. I know they are based out of Austin Tx. I wonder why they do not seem to have many external usb sound cards, I think it is better than having enternal cards that go out off the mother borad and the USB card you can take when you get a knew system. How much does a very good USB soundcard cost? I bought a pair of
high res audiophile grade headphones, and the reviews say you
definately need an external DAC/soundcard to drive them to get all
the quality.

Cheers Heather

Hi all,

Yes, Edge has been updated recently, but brushing somebody off with "His
issue is that he's using a version of jaws older than 2020.",, I'm afraid is
a cop out! That's about as bad as telling someone to RTFM.

If Edge has only recently become useful in Jaws or anything else, and if he
doesn't have the latest and greatest screen reader, preventing him from
accessing The New Edge, then other alternatives need to be found. How about
trying a different browser? How about trying a different screen reader?

Sorry, but Edge is not the be all and end all of browsers. Neither is any
other browser. They are tools, and sometimes they don't work, period!
That's why a smart person uses more than one screen reader and more than one
browser!

I dislike Edge because I don't happen to know its commands well at all, and
even though I have Jaws 2020 and all, I'm not able to make it work
successfully for my needs. So, I use Chrome! I even use IE on occasion.
There are some few web sites that work best in IE. Yes, I know it's legacy,
but if it works, who am I to fix it?

So let's stop being insular around here, eh? Let's open ourselves to the
possibility that something other than Jaws may just be more effective in a
given situation. It works the other way around too. I always proof books
for Bookshare using Jaws. It works the best for this particular task. I
would not use it for outlook because it can't
decide what the Hell line it's reading in the folder summary. So, I
use NVDA or SA. Ya got to be flexible, folks!

If you are satisfied with the sound from your internal sound card, I
would suggest getting something like perhaps a forty to seventy U.S.
dollar UUSB external sound card and using that. I'm giving that as a
price range not because sound as good as what you were hearing can't be gotten for less.
Others who have evaluated sound cards may be able to comment on that.
For all I know, a twenty or thirty dollar sound card might serve as
well. But I think a good sound card in the price range I gave would be
very likely to satisfy you..

If you don't intend to record using the sound card or use other
features, you can just connect it and use it. If you want to record
and use other features, you would have to install the software, or at least the driver.

The sound went out from the sound card off the mother board.
So I am looking to external USB connected sound cards.
I did not like the sound that my little5 dollar USB speaker is giving
me and prefer to be able to use my 3.5 bows speakers again.
I wanted to have a sound card that jaws could use and I could use it
for all other audio from my MP3 library. I also watch youtube videos too.
I wanted a good quality sound card and I could take it if I have to
upgrade to another pc. If things are starting to go bad off the mother
board. For now it is just the sound and as far as I know that is the
only issue for now! I do like Dolby AC-3 for my media. Like the
surround sound too. IT is just audio first it was the screen reader
but, than it started affecting other sounds too. So that is why I
pulled out my 5 dollar USB speaker so I would still have sound. I am
not interested in gaming and i find that is all they talk about when I

I don't know honestly. I personally am looking at the Zen dac, which
is like 20 cheaper than the creative, but I think audiophile or music
orientated audio dacs are the best, as they don't have the sound
effects and such gamer cards have.

I would avoid the creative ones. There are reports online that the
driver software has bugs under 10, and that the direct mode, whith
enhancements disabled, isn't as neutral as it should be. Moreover,
the enhancements would mess with NVDA or JAWS, and be annoying.

Has anyone used this type of sound card? Also do you have to use
proprietary software or will windows10 detect the sound card. I
keep reading about them off amazon and first they say you can
plug and goe and than they said you have to to use Creative Sound
Blaster controls to do ajustments to the sound card. That is fine
but will the drivers be accessible to jaws or NVDA? Thanks

But isn't there a midrange, to high grade price range? I read
around
100-200 dollars average for a good one.

Hi,

How much does a very good USB soundcard cost? I bought a pair
of high res audiophile grade headphones, and the reviews say
you definately need an external DAC/soundcard to drive them to
get all the quality.

This has happened to my partner after every major Windows update.
She has a Dell Lattitude and is using JAWS. Dell had her
disable the Real Tech audio drivers so the computer would use
the computer speakers.
This does fix the issue but like I said, every major update
re-installs the Real Tech drivers again and this process
starts all over again. Hope this helps.

Re: Displaying The System Tray Icon For Windows Security

Mike B

Hi Ron,

Try the following:
1. Press Windows key + I, for settings, tab 1 time to, System , right arrow to, Personalization , and press enter.
2. Tab 1 time into the personalization list, and down arrow to, Taskbar , and press enter.
3. Tab several times to, Select which icons appear on the Taskbar link, and press enter.
4. Tab through the icons and press the spacebar to turn them on / off, depending on if you want them to show in the System tray or not.

Added note how to arrange your system tray in the order you want:

From: Mike B
I just learned that the Badges option needs to be turned off in order to rearrange the System Tray icons and here are my corrected steps:
Settings and their state:
Lock the Taskbar button, On.

The next several options I have Unchecked / Off.

Taskbar location on screen Combo box, Bottom

Taskbar location on screen Combine taskbar buttons, Never
Here's how I rearrange the system tray icons  running Windows 10 Pro Version 1809 (OS Build 17763.379) & all installed versions of Jaws.
1. Windows key + I, for Settings, tab 1 time to System, right arrow to Personalization, and press enter.
2. Navigate to, Taskbar and press enter.
3. Tab several times to, Show Badges on Taskbar..., and make sure this is, Off / unchecked.
4. Tab a few times to, Notification Area, Select which icons appear on the taskbar Link, and press enter.
5. Okay now to put the System Tray in the order you want it in.  Tab through all the icons making a note of which ones you have checked / turned on because
you're going to uncheck all of them.
6. Uncheck all the icons.  Now you will go through and check the icons in the order you want them in but keep in mind, they will appear in the reverse
order that they are checked.  What I mean is, the 1st one yu check will be at the bottom of the list, the 2nd will be 2nd from the bottom, the 3rd will
be 3rd from the bottom etc. etc....  After you're done open the system tray to make sure it's the way you want it and Alt + F4 if it is.
Note:  With the System Tray now arranged the way you want it, you can now turn, Badges, on if you prefer this setting to be on.

Take care.  Mike.  Sent from my iBarstool.

Subject: [TechTalk] Displaying The System Tray Icon For Windows Security

Hi Group,

I was finally able to uninstall Avast Anti Virus from my older and
recently upgraded Windows 10 machine. I did activate Windows Security.
On my two other Windows 10 systems, I see the Windows Security Icon in
the system tray. On my older and upgraded version (from Windows 7)
Windows 10 machine--the one that I uninstalled Avast from, I do not see
the Windows Security icon on the system tray.

How do I display this icon on the system tray for ease of access?

Thanks for any help.

Hi Madison,

My suggestion may not be as elegant as some others, but this is what I would do.

1. GO to your start menu and type edge. Ensure your focus is on microsoft edge.
2. Press shift f10, and choose open file location. You may need to arrow through a list, and press enter more than once on the show location option.
3. You should hear programs; Microsoft Edge. Press control C. Go to the desktop now, and press control V.
Cheers

Re: How to find out size of documents folder

Another way would be to either press enter on the, This PC , icon on your desktop or press, Windows key + E, to open This PC.
Now navigate to the Documents folder and pres, Alt + Enter, to open properties, or open the context menu with the applications key or shift + F10, up arrow to properties and press enter.
Now route the Jaws cursor to the PC cursor, Insert + Numpad minus, press the Pageup key, and now down arrow through to the folder size info.

Take care.  Mike.  Sent from my iBarstool.
