Not sure if they had you try sfc /scannow to try and have windows fix any corrupt files. You can open a command prompt with admin elevation, when the CMD window opens just type “sfc /scannow” without the quotes and press enter. To check the progress you can press the jaws hotkey to read current line “JAWS plus UpArrow” Also do a clean up of all system temp files by running disk clean up in administrator elevation. Make sure all check boxes are checked. And start the clean up. If you have done all of this already then yes reinstalling your windows would be preferred. Windows ten recovery is nice and you may have the option to restore your computer back to factory settings.

Hi all, I have been with the Microsoft desk five different times on this, and they finally told me that they couldn’t help me. They think I have a hard ware issue. I have been trying to get this computer to update all the windows update for month’s .now, and it just won’t update. I have jaws 2018 on it, but it is only part of the program. For example I have jaws 18 Om my desk top. When I hit enter on it, it doesn’t go to options, basic, etc. it opens to jaws, roaming, settings. I have a disc here with jaws 2018 on it, and it tries to install, but the install fails at   50%. I tried to install versions 19 through 2021 and they all failed at 50%.This computer used to be wonderful. I haven’t a clue as to what has happened to titlist there any way I can reset the computer, and get a   fresh start with it? How could I do that and keep the programs I have? Is there anything I can do? This is an ASUS computer, 3 years old? Thanks for putting up with my earlier emails. Jim.

Hi Pablo,

This is true, but we don’t know what MS has tried yet.  Sometimes, MS doesn’t know what to do either, even though, they should, as that is why they are there.  I’ve worked with MS before, and sometimes, I wish I didn’t for the simple fact, by the time they got done with my PC, it was a mess!  But then again, there have been times my PC was better, so it’s hard to say.

You can refresh your windows. However, it imply that you will need to reinstall all software. Nevertheless, being you, I would do a defrag on my hard drive.

On google are a lot of guidance about how to defrag. If you have windows 10, the process of refreshing is even easier. However, I would do the defrag before. Looks like on your hard drive are loosen things.

Re: another gmail question

Hi Madison!
No need to apologize, this is what this list is for, so don't worry, just ask away! I'm sure there is a way to do what you want to do, but I just don't know how, as I've never worked with Gmail. Now, that I have Windows Ten, I am using Windows Mail, and so far, I really like it, but I'm sure I have a lot to learn about it. It was very easy to set up, and that's fine with me! Smile! Hopefully someone will be out here soon, and give you some suggestions. Did you ever try Windows Mail? If so, what did you think about it?

Sorry to keep asking you guys about this stuff, but now that I've added my gmail

emails from my mts inbox to my gmail one? I know I could just go to my old inbox
if needed, but if I'm truly going to switch email addresses then I'd like to
have all my emails in one place. I know I could forward them, but I have tones

Thanks Gene, I know how to set defaults in win 10 but I just didn't think I'd have to do that in this case.

If you want to make specific files play in Winamp but not have it be the default, do you know how to do this using open with in the context menu when you are on a file with an extension you want a program to use?

Sorry I'm just getting back to this but finding the file types using

Interestingly everything in the list of file types was supposedly
unselected and I couldn't figure out how to select them because hitting
the spacebar on each one didn't select it at least according to jaws
2020, but yet when I want to play an mp3 it comes up in winamp.

Hi Gene,
Maybe you are referring to the Recovery feature in Windows Ten, if so, I think that can be found in the Control Panel.

Windows 10 has a feature, I don't know what it is called, that allows you to
restore Windows while keeping your programs or while not keeping them. I
don't know enough about the feature to discuss it in any detail but it may
give you something to inquire about.

I don't know if it is better to try this or have the computer checked or
just get a new one. We don't know how old it is and whether it is worth
spending any meaningful amount of money to diagnose and perhaps repair in
terms of the computer itself.

Hi Jim,

Wow, this sounds like a real mess!  Jim, do you know what MS checked on your PC? I know sometimes certain antivirus applications that are well known for causing issues like these.  Did MS turn off Firewall , and try the updates? Did MS check how much space on your PC? Did MS Check third-party drivers and download any updates?  I am not very familiar with Windows Ten yet, but I’m  learning! LOL!  I do know Windows can cause problems like these.  I can’t tell you just how many times I felt like pulling out my hair, just because of Windows, or just throwing the PC out the Window!     As far as downloading JAWS, you can always download him from the JAWS web site, if you can download at all.

Re: [Tec Talk] I am totally embarrassed at my last emails. sorry for the emails.

Leigh Winfield

Hey don't feel embarrassed about anything computer. Computers are
difficult even for those who work with them every day. So here's my
worthless advice; First, try to make a image of what's on your hard drive.
It's like a mirror image,, maybe even another disk in the same computer that
you can copy everything on to. Two; you could be right about a hardware
problem, but probably not. You may need some sighted help, make sure
everything that can be is up-to-date. Jaws may say you have clicked the
correct checkbox but not really. I've had that happen several times.
There's something about a honest to goodness mouse click that the computer
likes better. Third; You can re-format the hard drive disk. Do you have
windows 10? If you do then; pushing the power button from the off position
three times and then holding in the power button for thirty seconds, will
erase everything and re-format the hard drive giving you a fresh start
including no JAWS. However windows key and enter will turn on narrator.
Narrator is getting better and will get you by long enough to re-load JAWS.
Before all of that try making sure updates are really turned on and working
properly. I too have used the Microsoft help desk and been disappointed.
Sad to say most of those helpers are from the Philippians and have less
knowledge than one would hope for.
So hopefully you'll get back to normal with your computer, I'm very sorry
for your problem, it's a bummer to have to suffer with those kinds of
discouragements. Good luck and keep the faith, sooner or later you'll get
everything working again.
Sincerely Leigh W.

Hello,

I would reset the computer, and backup your data. You can backup your most important items on a flash drive or in the cloud and reset. I know it is a pane, but I think it is going to need to happen.

Subject: [TechTalk] I am totally embarrassed at my last emails. sorry for the emails.

Jim.

another gmail question

Madison Martin

Hi all,
Sorry to keep asking you guys about this stuff, but now that I've added my gmail
account to Outlook and disabled forwarding, is there a way to move all of my old
emails from my mts inbox to my gmail one? I know I could just go to my old inbox
if needed, but if I'm truly going to switch email addresses then I'd like to
have all my emails in one place. I know I could forward them, but I have tones
so that would take forever. Thanks for your patience!!!
Madison

Hi all, Microsoft has been with me several times and hey finality said they can’t halfpipe me. They think it is a hardware issue. It is out of warrantee. I never know from one minute to the next what I will be dealing with. I’m tired of these adventures. Here is my question, Can I do  a reset button on the computer and get it back to factory settings? Of course I would lose all the programs I have, so maybe there is a Vetter way. Help please. Jim
