Hi Veronica,
I have used Seagate very successfully, I have also used Western Digital successfully, and I've been using both of them for at least 14 years, and so far, so good! Smile! You should definitely backup regularly because if you don't, you can lose all your files and folders, as well as Books, Movies, music, like I did some years ago, and I sure kicked myself for that, but then again, I learned the trick is to back up! Smile!

Re: can a blind person set up a computer without sighted help?? and with the problems I am having, would it help?

Hi Keith,

I’m sorry for my late reply, but I’ve been extremely busy.  I wouldn’t perform any reset, refresh, and definitely not a factory reset.  The reason I say this is because your PC came with Windows 8.  Although, I would definitely check the PC to see what apps are running in the background, what apps are starting on boot up, how many apps are running at the same time, before doing anything to the PC.  You could also check how much disk space you have on your PC.  You could also check to be for sure you are getting all the necessary updates, as well as drivers, you could also check and delete any apps you might not need or want, in which this could also improve performance on your PC, in which I think that would make a huge difference.  Having said all this, I’m thinking you are going to have to perform a defrag on your PC, providing your PC doesn’t have a SSD, and if so, I wouldn’t do a defrag.  I know MS has machines set to defrag I think once a month, and this is set as default.  Although, some times that isn’t enough, but then again, MS doesn’t know what you will be doing with your PC either, so sometimes we have to defrag more than just once a month, but then again, it really all depends on what you are doing with your PC.  Matter of fact, I checked my Windows 7 to see why it is running much faster than my new Windows 10, and I apparently set my Windows 7 to defrag once a week, and that is because I do quite a bit with my Windows 7.  I checked my Windows 10, and sure enough, MS has it set as the default to defrag once a month, so I will be changing that as well, as deleting some gremlins that came along with Windows 10. Smile!  So you have to also take in to consideration what you are doing with your PC, and only you know that.  I noticed you said you are using JAWS as your screen reader, so what version of JAWS are you using?  I don’t know how but for some reason, I didn’t increase the speech rate on JAWS when I installed him on Windows 10, so I thought oh my goodness this Windows 10 is just to slow, so it finally dawned on me to increase JAWS speech rate, and my Laptop seems to be running faster now!  LOL!  Stupidity on my part!  So as you can see, you do have several different options in order to improve performance on your PC, but it all depends on how much time and  effort you might want to put in to it.  I definitely think it is well worth putting time and effort in to it, but that is up to you.  You could also call ms if you want to, and explain to them the problems you are having, and see what they will say.  MS can also log in to your PC, and chances are they can tell what the problem is, and tell you what to do about it, or they can do it for you.  If you are interested  in calling them, I can give you their phone number providing you are in the US, so just let me know.  Keith don’t give up, because like I said you do have several different options here.

No clue. I did not get jaws until they bought window eyes/gwmicro and I installed jaws on the windows 10 computer.  the computer came with windows 8 and I knew that I would be updating it to windows 10 and also knew that window eyes (at it's last version) did not work on windows 10  OS.

Hi Keith,

Did the Laptop start slowing down right after your cousin installed Windows 10, or was it sometime later, like maybe some months or maybe a year later?   I ask these questions because the more information you can provide to us, the more we can pinpoint the problem.  As, I know this can be quite annoying, having a slow PC!

I've had the laptop with windows 10 on it for 2 to 3 years.  It originally came with   windows 8 and my cousin ran the free upgrade to windows 10 (took about 8 hours for the download and installation so I left it with him and he got it back a couple  of days later.

 It's an HP laptop.

Keith,

How long have you had Windows 10? Do you have a Desktop or Laptop? I really don’t think JAWS can slow down a PC though.  Although, JAWS can be a little flaky sometimes, but I just don’t think we can hold JAWS responsible for this one!  Smile!  There has to be something else that is slowing down your PC. I’m hopeing when I finally remove the bloatware from my Windows Laptop, it will pick up some spead!  Oh what I would give to have Windows XP again, as I loved that XP.  I know the days of Windows XP is long gone!

I've had a computer guy take a look at it and he said that besides some HP proprietary software required to run the actual computer , I don't have any bloat ware running on my system.  he is not familiar with screen readers but he said that jaws might  be the cause of the slow down. And yes, I to am trying to learn windows 10 and also jaws as I am a former window eyes  user.  I still run a laptop with xp and window eyes and it is a heck of a lot faster than my "new" laptop with jaws and win 10 on it.   I don't do any emailing or shopping on it, but I like the smoothness and the response and speed of the window eyes and xp experience on the older computer.

Shrug.  Needless to say, a lot of the internet and what not is cut off from me because of the xp machine not being able to load most websites but hey, I prefer getting things typed out on my xp wordpad rather than typing a line of text on the win 10 comptuer and then having to wait  for either jaws or win 10 to catch up and actually speak the line I just typed.

Hi Keith,

I’m not very familiar with Windows 10, but I’m learning!  LOL!  As far as your pc running that slow, I would definitely check to see what apps might be running in the background.  Slow computers are often caused by too many programs running simultaneously, taking up processing power and reducing the PC's performance.  That’s just my personal opinion though.  I don’t know if you are running a Desktop or Laptop like I am or not, but even though, I’ve had my new Laptop barely  3 weeks, and I haven’t worked on it much this past week, my Laptop appears to be much slower than my old Windows 7, and I’ve had Windows 7 since 2012.  Although, I’m sure my slowness of my new Laptop is caused by a lot of bloatware that came with Windows 10 as well as the updates, I know I need to get rid of, or at least I hope that’s all it is!  Smile!  As far as using the Reset option, from my understanding, the reset feature is a repair tool in Windows 10.  You can use that, and you can choose what you want to keep, and after the repair, that will reinstall a fresh copy of Windows 10.  I hope this helps a little, as I just can’t stand a sluggish pc, I would rather throw it out the Window!  Smile!

does this resetting reinstall windows completely, (aka download a new copy of windows from the Microsoft servers and install it on your system?  I upgraded from windows 8 to windows 10 when MS was offering the free update and my system is is as slow as heck.  I have the proper amount of ram and cpu speed on my laptop to handle windows 10 and jaws, but the computer is very "laggy" and simple things like opening a folder can take up to 2 minutes to complete and allow access to the files in the folder.  opening programs is the same way, even functions taht are part of windows are slow to open and respond.

thanks

Hi Jim,

I’m sorry you’re still having this problem, as this can be quite frustorating!  Jim, if we had an idea is to what MS has already done on your PC, we could at least alimanate some suggestions.  I could say you could use the reset feature, in which you would have the option to save your files or remove them, and a fresh Windows would download, but then again, some of your files could be causing you from downloading, so we don’t know if that would help. I’m not really too familiar with Windows Ten, but I’m learning!  From my understanding, if you reset your PC and keep files,

This reset option will reinstall Windows 10 and keeps your personal files, such as photos, music, videos or personal files. However, it will remove apps and drivers you installed, and also removes the changes you made to the settings.   I think using the reset option, it can take maybe two or three hours, if you decide to keep your files during the reset process.  I also think third-party software, system file corruption, system settings changes, or malware should be fixed by resetting your PC though.  I hope at least this gives you something to think about, if MS hasn’t already done this.

Hi all, my computer won’t update, and hasn’t in months. Microsoft has tried to fix the problem and they say they can’t fix the problem. So what if I reset this computer to factory settings, would it eliminate problems like this? I of course would have to store the programs I have now, but that can be done. Anyway, I need your thoughts. I am running windows ten and jaws 18, because I can’t install 2019, or 2020. Jim

Re: Question about an audio cable from a friend

It all depends on what you route to what output. Yes, you can use an HDMI port for audio only. I did this frequently on my old Mac Mini 2012 model, routing audio from Logic, Reaper, Pro Tools and Komplete Kontrol to the HDMI port which was connected to a Sonos sound bar.

an HDMI cable in to that port and in to a monetor, you can get both
video and audio.  I know of an adaptor that theoretically should be
able to split the video and audio.  It has an HDMI in, HDMI and 3.5 mm

answered?

I haven't compared brands. You might do a search for something like external hard drive reviews, or best external hard drives 2021 to see if you can find reviews from this year. Or if you don't find results, or good ones, doing a search for best hard drives 2020 should produce results for last year.

I use Seagate, but aside from the brand being cheaper than many other brands, I can't comment on their reliability when compared with other brands.

There are options for backing up files not using external hard drives. I'll let others discuss that. But in terms of storing more than your internal hard drive will hold, not as a backup but as a way to store and retrieve material conveniently, an external hard drive is a good and widely used option.

Hi Group,

Earlier today, I tried using Pontes Media Downloader and right in the middle of my attempts, I lost Internet connectivity. This was in the middle of a Pontes download from Youtube. I had to reboot my modem and router and then everything seemed to work OK except for Pontes. At this same time, the JAVA applet decided to update. In the past, when JAVA has updated, it has broken Pontes and I had to either uninstall and reinstall Pontes or manually install the youtube-dl.exe file from youtube-dl.org.

In any case, I went through all this business and Pontes still didn't work. I then began playing around with the menus in Pontes, something I almost never do. I saw an item under the downloads menu that said: 'clear all list items.' I clicked this item and then tried using Pontes again. What do you know? It worked! i tried several songs after this from Youtube and they all downloaded just fine.

So maybe when your version of Pontes Media Downloader doesn't work any more, try accessing the download menu and the 'clear all list items' before you do anything radical.

That command opens options. It is a short cut. To open the menus, from which you can open options and see other things available, use alt, as usual in menu programs. But for some reason, in version 3.x. the first time you down arrow, nothing happens except maybe something visual. If you down arrow twice, you will move through the menu you are on.

work. I then began playing around with the menus in Pontes, something I
almost never do. I saw an item under the downloads menu that said: 'clear
all list items.' I clicked this item and then tried using Pontes again.
What do you know? It worked! i tried several songs after this from Youtube
and they all downloaded just fine.

So maybe when your version of Pontes Media Downloader doesn't work any
more, try accessing the download menu and the 'clear all list items'
before you do anything radical.

What version do you have? I don't have any option to clear downloads.

Amazon Echo 4th gen speaker

Fanus

Hello list
I hope this is not off topic. Here in SA a company advertise an amazon echo
4th gen with smart hub included. I searched on the amazon site for such a
device in the hope I can find a book explaining the device but I do not find
the device. Is there such a device? I specifically look for an echo with a
smart hub. Also, is there an email list for echo devices?
Regards
Fanus
