Re: 5g and me

Why is a charger that much, when you can get a good one for
five dollars at Wal-Mart. I did, because it is one that the
plugs fold in. I keep it in my purse, so I can charge my
phone if I'm gone longer than expected, but it works fine.

Start trembling. A charger will set you back $40. Plus
another $40 for bluetoot earbuds, which are also not
included, but you may need, anyway, because there is no
headphone jack. Oh, and didI mention a case and screen
protector, probably another $60 or so. And if you walk
around with a white cane or guide dog harness in hand, a
neck lanyard will come in handy, probably about $20. And
don't forget sales tax. By the time you're finished, that
$700 IPhone 12 Mini will wind up costing closer to $1000.
But hey, Tim Cook has taken a page out of the P.T. Barnum

As long as you have a 4G phone, it is compatible
with 5G networks, and you are not missing much of anything.
Unless you buy into the media hype and want to fork over
$700 or more for a 5G IPhone 12, which, shockingly, does not
come with a charger and like previous models, does not have
a physical home key. But, hey, it's your money.

Hair splitting, I know, but I'd say the network is compatible with the phone, backward compatible in this case.

But the only real advantage of 5G is it's incredibly improved throughput, and if you're not even maxing out the throughput of 4G LTE with what you're doing (and most of us aren't anywhere near doing so), then it's more expense for an unused capability.

I always try to encourage all my clients to think about what it is that they are actually doing, or what it is they intend to be doing foreseeably, when they are looking at any new electronic device. I have seen people throw away tons of money for the very, very top performing devices that very few professionals even buy and then using them to read email and surf the web. You don't need a $2000 computer or smartphone to do those things, along with a lot more, and you absolutely don't need 5G to do that. 4G speeds are not only sufficient, but way more than that, and can handle streaming along with the other mentioned things going on, all at the same time, without bogging down. (And I'm presuming that you're not going to try to be downloading 30 ISO files at once along with 9 months of unread email while watching Netflix, all at the same time.)

Re: USB device not recognized

Fanus

Hello Brian

All my memory sticks, external drive, orbit and Victor Stream connect correctly to my laptop. I am sure its a pc problem. I did a reset of the usb ports in Device Manager but no luck. Even when I use a powered USB hub it does not solve the problem. The strange thing is that I have a USB sound card which takes care of JAWS and my printer is connected to another one and a Wifi dongle to a third. All those devices work perfectly but when I plug a memory stick or external drive or the orbit or the victor into one of those ports I get the same error.

In all probability, no.   It sounds like you've got a USB drive gone bad, which is not an extremely rare occurrence, though it's not anywhere near to a daily one, either.

Test the drive by plugging it in to a computer, if it fails there, then the drive is dead.

As far as your devices, does the PC recognize them via any USB port?  It sounds like there are no device drivers installed for either the Victor Stream or Orbit Reader.

Re: USB device not recognized

Merv Keck <blind5sparrow@...>

This is pretty common if you are using windows ten and a USB hub. I see it all the time on brand new fully functional machines and external devices.
The only advice I can give is a work around which usually works for me. If you are plugging a USB device or drive directly into your PC you may have to try plugging it in a couple of times and eventually it will recognize it. Sometimes if you have another drive similar to that drive plugged in already and you unplug it first and then plug the offending drive in it will recognize the troublesome drive and then you can plug the first drive back in. I can usually always make it work wherever I am ad I hear the message. Hubs are usually the easiest to manipulate though. I used to keep a 4 port unpowered hub with me just in case but I recently donated it for another tech emergency when troubleshooting an issue somewhere.
Hope that helps.

Re: speakers are not announcing scores

Norma A. Boge

I use Amazon smart speakers. It is more difficult to get scores than it used to be. I am able to get in-game scores but I have to be creative when asking. For example, if you can’t get the score using one of the team names, use the other team. Or use both teams, i.e. “what’s the score of the Dodgers Braves game?” I don’t know why it became more difficult to get the scores, but they are available. Also, and I haven’t done this, you may want to find a skill to enable which will make scores easier to get. HTH Norma

Re: nvda doesn't tell me which cells are selected in libreoffice calc.

Gene

And is the responsibility with NVDA or with the program itself? Did the program work properly in this respect in the past? Did the same version of the program work properly with an earlier version of NVDA? It may be that NVDA can be made to work properly with this feature of Libre Office, but various programs included with Libre Office have long not been properly accessible. I don't know how the program sends such information to NVDA and it may require the developers of Libre Office to address the problem or it may take unreasonable time and resources for NVDA to correct something that is a fault of the program, given the priorities and resource limitations you spoke of.

Do we know that NV Access is ignoring this issue? We need to consider
that they have many bugs in the queue and that these issues need to be
carefully prioritized and, as we say in the industry, groomed based on
many factors. How severe is the bug? How many users might it affect?
What is the level of effort needed in order to determine what is causing
the issue and what is needed to correct it? How many developers do we
have and which one(s) should be assigned to address it and what is their
current bandwidth and workload? Don't get me wrong; I am not downplaying
the severity of this issue. Not receiving audible or possibly Braille
feedback while selecting cells in a spreadsheet is an accessibility
defect and it should be addressed. I'm only saying that there are many
factors which determine how, when or if it can/will be addressed? I
think that we should be very careful in making statements such as saying
that a company is ignoring an issue just because it hasn't been
addressed or commented on in a Github ticket. There may have been
discussions about prioritizing LibreOffice accessibility issues that we
as end users wouldn't necessarily know about.

You're right on the version number. using version 7.0.2.2

Searching github, this seems to be a long standing issue that nvaccess is ignoring.

https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/6897

I'm not on the nvda list, but this would be worth reporting there.

Thanks.

On one level, yes. However, please consider that someone who says "I am using the latest version of NVDA might sincerely believe that he is using the very latest version but may actually be using an earlier version without realizing it. He may not have been aware that one or more versions had been subsequently released since the version that he installed or which may have been installed for him. In fact, since a new version of NVDA was just released yesterday I can't assume that the user might actually be aware of this fact. Therefore, a user who tells me that he is using the latest version of a program doesn't actually verify to me that we're talking about the latest version. Specifying version numbers removes this ambiguity.
For LibreOffice, the latest version is 7.0.2. Is this the one you are running?

Thanks.

Norman, while I don't write this to be unkind could you tell us the exact version of NVDA and of LibreOffice you are using. I know you said that you are using the latest version of NVDA but that doesn't tell us exactly which version you are using.
I can confirm that this is an issue using NVDA 2020.3 and LibreOffice Calc 7.0.1. I would encourage you to search the NV Access Github to see if this has been filed as a bug. If it has not please do report this if you have not already done so.
