Unless you have an extended warranty from Dell, they won't give you the time of day, and it will be up to you to decide whether to replace your failing hard drive on your own. Instead of replacing the bad hard drive, you might want to consider acquiring a refurbished computer from the Texas-based Computers for the Blind organization which makes refurbished Windows 7 desktops and laptops available to blind individuals upon request for the nominal fee of $110 or $140, respectively. Because these computers come with JAWS 17 demo and NVDA already installed, as well as a bunch of other blind-friendly programs like Windows Live Mail and Jarte word processor, getting up and running again will be much easier than buying a new computer and installing everything from scratch.

Not necessarily. My understanding is that on some computers you cannot restore a backup image to a new local hard drive unless it is essentially identical to the old drive it is replacing. Four years ago, the hard drive on my previous Dell XP desktop failed but because it was still covered by an extended warranty,a Dell technician visited my home and replaced it free of charge with essentially the same unit, and I was able to restore all my programs and files with the help of my techie friend from the image backup I had created using Paragon Drive Backup just before the old drive died forever. I asked the Dell technician whether I would have been able to restore my programs from the image backup if I had installed a different SADA hard drive instead of the Dell unit he had installed, and he replied that this would probably not have been possible.

These days any worthwhile imaging or cloning software can copy locked files while still booted into Windows using the Volume Shadow service. Although it is true that to restore the image you will have to boot into something like WinPE.

lets say if i have a 1tb internal drive which is failing. i will get a 1tb new internal drive. the drive should be of the same size as your original drive you can get a larger new drive but the partition will only count 1tb and the remaining space will be unalocated space which you must give to respective partitions. then using external drive i will boot in win7pe or win10pe. then i will use a clone software and clone my primary failing drive to my new drive. once that is done i will remove my primary drive which is installed to sata port 0 and connect my new drive to sata port 0 and test boot. i would advise not to image or cloan your drive when you are inside windows as some files that are in use may not image or cloan properly and i have had failed restores when doing that

need. It is dependant on how much data is on the drive you are trying to
image. Active@ Disk Image Lite should warn you if the drive where you are
saving the image does not have enough free space. If errors are found
which are serious enough to prevent the image from being created, Active@ Disk

As you might know, you should use the Settings app in Windows 10 to control Windows Defender in Windows 10. I am sure you are aware, but let's remind that you cannot disable, or enable automatic scanning in Windows 10's Windows Defender settings (I mean actually the Settings app) like you do in Windows 7. Fortuantely it's still possible to disable or enable the real time protection there if required.

within the programs themselves. I'm not saying that you couldn't tell from
Task Scheduler, but you would usually expect such settings to be set from within
the programs. Also, while Windows Defender may have been expanded to
included defrag and a check disk function, such were always handled by other
programs in the past. You really don't need to perform such tasks
routinely with modern systems unless you are concerned about whether you use a
laptop computer in a wreckless manner or whether an acciden has occurred.
But in the case of desktops. I wouldn't worry.

The control panel for scheduled tasks was a lot easier to understand with earlier versions of windows. I can't make heads or tails of this one. I just wanted to make sure that I have windows defender to scan, defrag, and check disk. Wouldn't those already be set up? Any tips or resources to read would be appreciated. Melissa

Creating an image is fairly straight forward once you know how. You don't have to use the JAWS cursor. To create an image do the following.
1. Run Active@ Disk Image Lite.
2. Press Alt T to activate the "Tools" menu.
3. Select "Disk to Image"
4. A list of disks will be displayed. Select "Disk 0" from the list and press the Spacebar to check it.
5. Select the "Next" button.
6. A name for the folder and the drive where the image will be saved are suggested. If you want to use a different folder name or drive, use the "Browse" button to select the location.
7. Make sure the "Local or network file" radio button is selected.
8. Select the "Next" button.
9. Make sure the "Compression" radio button is set to "High" and the "Image splitting" radio button is set to "Automatic (try single file)"
10. Select the "Next" button.
11. Leave all settings in this dialog at their defaults and select the "Next" button.
12. Active@ Disk Image Lite will begin creating the image.
