Re: Urgent help needed: failing hard drive
Thank you for your suggestions. I have another question but this one is related to imaging. Will I be able to save things like program settings? I hope that I'll still be able to use my current copy of jaws on a new drive.

Re: Urgent help needed: failing hard drive
Cloning simply means copying one drive directly on to another so the question of whether a clone takes up more space than an image is not applicable.

Re: Urgent help needed: failing hard drive
That depends on the cloning software. Some cloning software also allows you to copy only used sectors and select specific partitions. In the case of XXCLONE, this is not relevant since XXCLONE performs file based cloning as opposed to sector based cloning like many other cloning applications.

Not everyone is technically comfortable enough to replace a hard drive. I suspect that is probably true of the majority of list members. Besides, it's not just a matter of replacing the drive. You also have to reinstall Windows or clone/image from the old drive. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Edmond Nazarian via Groups.io" <gocloud84=aol.com@groups.io> To: <main@TechTalk.groups.io> Sent: Sunday, September 11, 2016 7:59 PM Subject: Re: [TechTalk] Urgent help needed: failing hard drive
I'd try replacing the HDD on my own. Every tech could do it easily. If it is a computer from the last 7 years then you can simply go with a SATA hard drive. Let us know what capacity you need and we'll try to find a good deal. I believe contacting Dell should not be a good idea because your computer is less likely in warranty, and Dell may either refuse and/or over charge you for such replacement.

As far as I know, when you clone a hard drive, you copy the entire drive regardless of partitions or available data on it. When using an imaging software like Active@ Disk Image, you have the option for selecting the sectors you want, without having to copy the entire hard drive. Hope I explained well.

Hi, it's a 1 tb Sata drive by Seagate. I've never had to look at internal drives but I'm wondering how much I could expect to pay for one of these?

Re: Urgent help needed: failing hard drive
As far as I know, when you clone a hard drive, you copy the entire drive regardless of partitions or available data on it. When using an imaging software like Active@ Disk Image, you have the option for selecting the sectors you want, without having to copy the entire hard drive. Hope I explained well.

In theory you can do it yourself if the drive is still functional enough to allow cloning/imaging via standard means, but otherwise you will need assistance from a technician. If you are running Windows 7, Active@ Disk Image Lite http://www.disk-image.net/disk-image-freeware.htm is free and will allow you to create an image. Are there programs that will let me clone/image the drive myself or should I let someone else do it? If I can make an image of the drive, this might be easier or save me some money down the road. -----Original Message----- From: main@TechTalk.groups.io [mailto:main@TechTalk.groups.io] On Behalf Of Carlos Sent: Sunday, September 11, 2016 8:15 PM To: main@TechTalk.groups.io Subject: Re: [TechTalk] Urgent help needed: failing hard drive Yes, cloning or using an image from the old drive will restore everything. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sylvia" <sylvia0647@gmail.com> To: <main@TechTalk.groups.io> Sent: Sunday, September 11, 2016 8:12 PM Subject: Re: [TechTalk] Urgent help needed: failing hard drive Carlos, if I image from the old drive, will I be able to transfer all of my programs over without having to reinstall them from scratch? -----Original Message----- From: main@TechTalk.groups.io [mailto:main@TechTalk.groups.io] On Behalf Of Carlos Sent: Sunday, September 11, 2016 8:03 PM To: main@TechTalk.groups.io Subject: Re: [TechTalk] Urgent help needed: failing hard drive Not everyone is technically comfortable enough to replace a hard drive.

Hello, I have all of my data backed up on an external so this problem doesn't seem like a total disaster. This computer is about 6.5 years old so I might have to contact Dell to find out if the drive can be replaced at all. I'm not really looking forward to having to reinstall windows but if that's going to be my best option, I'm going to ask for help.

Hi all,
My immediate reaction is replace the hard drive ASAP so that you can try to recover your data. Now, if you're running XP, you may want to use your failing HD as an excuse to get a new system. I don't know the whole story so I can't say.

Re: Urgent help needed: failing hard drive
For cloning you can try the free edition of XXCLONE. http://www.xxclone.com/Although it requires use of the JAWS or equivalent cursor.

If you are running Windows 7, Active@ Disk Image Lite http://www.disk-image.net/disk-image-freeware.htm is free and will allow you to create an image. If you are running the Anniversary build of Windows 10, I would recommend something which has been updated more recently such as Image for Windows. http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/image-for-windows.htm Although it is not free. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sylvia" <sylvia0647@gmail.com> To: <main@TechTalk.groups.io> Sent: Sunday, September 11, 2016 8:17 PM Subject: Re: [TechTalk] Urgent help needed: failing hard drive
I'm going to apologize in advance for all of my questions because there may be a lot of them. Are there programs that will let me clone/image the drive myself or should I let someone else do it? If I can make an image of the drive, this might be easier or save me some money down the road.

Carlos, if I image from the old drive, will I be able to transfer all of my programs over without having to reinstall them from scratch?
