Re: aph light touch brailler?

Ron Canazzi

Hi Group,

I had a Perkins Braille that the local Lions club bought for me after I went blind in 1965.  I used that Brailler regularly for 40 years.  It finally got so dilapidated that I had to replace it.  The new one I got for over 1500 dollars US has already developed issues. It's much chintzier than the original one I had. The original one had a light wood bottom.  The newer one has what feels like heavy cardboard.  The older one was heavier and I believe most of the internal parts were metal.  The newer one is lighter and a cursory examination of the inside shows that many of the parts are now light plastic.  After only five years of light usage, it has developed a problem where when you press a key to create a letter, the carriage won't move on more than occasional basis.  I have to manually move the carriage.

So I am wondering if the newer versions of the Perkins Brailler are  lower quality than the originals of some 50 years ago.

Hi all,

If you mean those multi-colored plastic things that were supposedly designed for children, they aren't worth the plastic to put them together.

If you want a brightly colored, plastic, toy, then buy one. You will find that within two weeks of standard usage by an adult you will have to send it in for repairs. Once you get it back, you'll have to send it back again for repairs in about two to three weeks. They're useless toys. They aren't suitable for adults who intend to use them for brailling anything beyond simple two to three word sentences, brailled at a speed of one char per minute. If you want a brailler, spend the money and get a real one from Perkins, a metal one that isn't going to fall apart the moment you touch the keys.

Better yet, buy an Orbit 20 and an embosser. You'll spend more money but it will be worth it.

aph light touch brailler?

Josh Kennedy

Hi,

Do any of you own and use the APH light touch standard, non-electric brailler? How do you like it? Does it produce good consistent braille dots on different kinds of paper?

electric brailler review and questions

Josh Kennedy

Hi,

I was able to get a used electric perkins brailler the kind that uses a solenoid plunger kit to allow for very light keypresses… which I sent to perkins for reconditioning or refurbishment. I got it back. Used it and for awhile it produced good consistent braille dots. Then tonight I tried writing on a slightly extra thick postcard or piece of junkmail that I wanted to use for braille paper. At first it worked fine but sometimes I would have to go over a line especially after writing some full braille cells of dots 1-2-3-4-5-6. I would get faded dots with dots 3-6 a lot of the time. So I tried writing more braille on normal braille paper, and suddenly I was getting faded dots, at random causing me to use backspace so frequently to rebraille missing characters that it was nearly impossible to write anything or use the electric perkins brailler constructively. Could I have broken it by using slightly thicker paper even though the paper went into the electric perkins brailler just fine? And no matter how fast, or how slow I write, I get faded dots at random but very very frequently. I am wondering maybe this is due to variations in electrical currents when the solenoids that operate the mechanical brailler parts are firing some may fire harder or stronger than others due to variations in electrical current? Thus causing randomly faded braille characters? I never had this happen with a standard or non-electric brailler, the kind that most people use. I thought the electric perkins brailler would be a superior product because of its very light key-pressure but now I am not sure… I also wrote to perkins about this. Maybe that is why when I was a kid back in the 80s and 90s in school, that I always got manual perkins braillers and not electric? Maybe my TVI knew that although the electric perkins braillers do have a light key press and yes you can write a bit faster with them, that they are prone to randomly faded dots due to electrical variations causing certain solenoids to fire at differing strengths causing randomly faded dots? Maybe I’m completely wrong here? I am Not sure. But maybe the standard brailler the non-electric that most people use is the better product because it does not rely on electric solenoid plungers to operate the brailler parts… What do you all think?

Hi Walter,

Let's start with the graphics setting first:
1. Open the Jaws quick settings with, Insert + V, and navigate to the graphics settings.
2. See if you can up or down arrow to the other settings, if so press the, F6, key 1 time and this should put you back to where you can press the spacebar
to toggle through the settings.
3. Press the spacebar to the preferred setting, tab to the Okay button and press enter to save / close.
Note: Pressing the, F6 key, switches the settings to be navigated between a combobox and using the spacebar to toggle through them. Whatever the correct
lingo is for this I don't know, but just press the F6 key to experiment.

Now for putting files and folders into list view:
1. Press, Windows key + E, to open ThisPC or Windows Explorer.
2. Open the context menu with the applications key or Shift + F10.
3. On the, View submenu, press enter or right arrow to open, down arrow to, List, and press enter. Pressing enter will take you out of the context menu.
4. Again open the context menu with the applications key or Shift + F10. On the, Sort by submenu, press enter or right arrow to open, and you want both
the, Name and Ascending, items checked.
5. Again open the context menu with the applications key or Shift + F10. Go down to the, Group by submenu, open it and you want, None, selected here.
6. Make sure nothing is selected and press, Alt + F, then press the letter, O, to open Folder options, and, Control + tab, to the, View tab / page.
7. You should hear, View Page You can apply this view (such as Details or Icons) to all folders of this type. Folder views Reset Folders Button. Press
the spacebar and choose the, Yes, option tab to, Okay, and press enter to save / close.
8. Now go to your Documents folder and check your file and folder View settings and if they're not the same use the steps above to do the same .

Re: Disabling "what device did you plug in?" announcement

My apologies

The dialog’s body is mainly a list of possible devices. Headphones, speakers and so on. Any device can be selected just like any other list box.

At the bottom of this list and above the ok and cancel buttons is where the do not show this dialog checkbox is showing.

I’ve looked at my Dell laptop for this setting but do not see it. I think the only way to make the dialog stop showing is the checkbox I have described.

There is indeed a checkbox to stop these dialogs from showing, however, the dialog is not the most accessible.

Possibly using the touch cursor, if you are a JAWS user, might help access the checkbox.

I have always needed sighted assistance to place a check mark into that box as I have had the same experience with not being able to access it.

Hi group,

On my Dell laptop with Win 10, every time I plug in headphones I get an announcement through the laptop’s speakers asking what audio device I’ve plugged in. Obviously, I’m plugging in headphones because I don’t want audio coming through the speakers. How do I turn this off? There is no “don’t show this message again” option in the dialogue.

Thanks for your help with this issue.

I am really unclear at this point as to what is being asked for.

It is easy, and the instructions have been given, to do a quick creation of a contact using the From field in an e-mail message.

If the address is in the message body, which is how I interpreted, "If there is an address in a message, I'd like to put it right in to my book," Then Sugar's copy and paste method is the only one I know of for doing that.

Re: Audio Description

Just go in and turn on audio description the way you normally would. In most cases there’s an SAP button or you go into the menu and turn on audio description. That’s all that should be necessary.

I am not sure if anyone out there follows the soap opera "Days of our Lives" on NBC but it is now described on a daily basis. Just thought I would pass that along if anyone is interested.
