Open the all programs menu in the following manner:
Press the start menu key.
Up arrow once to all programs.
Press enter.
Down arrow a few times until you hear programs start to be announced.
Type a repeatedly until you get to accessories.  I don’t know how your speech will read that but type the letter a until you get to accessories.
Press enter.
Down arrow to command prompt.
Open the context menu.
Down arrow to run as administrator and press enter.
The command prompt will open.
Type chkdsk and press enter.
If it is going to run, it will run and start giving you information.  You may want to stop speech for a time or, if you are using JAWS, switching the screen echo to none may work.  Don’t forget to set screen echo to highlighted after chkdsk has finished working.  Use JAWS key s to cycle through the screen echo choices.  Use screen review keys such as the JAWS cursor to look at the screen to review what is there.

We don’t know if the corrupt files are a separate issue.  If you are using Windows 10, I’ll wait to see what other people say about how to run the DOS prompt.  And you have to run it with administrative priveleges to run chkdsk.  Windows 7 instructions, which I could give might not be the same in one or two ways.

Gene, I absolutely do want these disk check instructions. You were right, by the way, about system restore. I had tried running it and it says it can't because of some corrupt files. But yes if you can walk me through how to run check disk with this command I would very much appreciate it.

While I don’t know if not being able to run chkdsk makes running system restore more dangerous, it may not be a good idea until you get more discussion.

The best way to run chkdsk without having it fix anything is to use the DOS prompt.  You will have speech throughout and you can see on the screen at the end, what was found and not fixed.  If all you find is that there are some errors such as unused disk space, I’ve always found that when I run chkdsk in this way and after I’ve run it in repair mode, I’ve still found the same errors.  I’ve never had any problems as a result.

If you want instructions on running chkdsk from the DOS prompt, ask here.

Have you tried checking the disk without rebooting just to see what it does? Whether or not it will actually run or not because this will give more information to see what might be the problem.

Check out the site below and see if any of the various 5 ideas help. The one that I was thinking was you trying a simple System Restore which is the second suggestion on the site below.

I have been having this annoying problem for weeks and wonder now if I might be better off trying to find some kind of check disk tool if one is available. I schedule it and have used the command prompt at times since I thought that might be even better than going to C drive and properties and scheduling it. Oh I've done that too, by the way, and after numerous normal startups I know it's definitely not checking the disk. I also have it set to repair sectors because I do suspect the hard drive has some sector problems. So it should take a lot longer for the computer to start. But it goes right into a normal boot, and also sfc /scannow won't complete because resource protection won't let it. Please help if you know of any advanced tools or things I can try. Using Jaws 2019 and 2020 and windows 7.

Thank you.

why not just any burn, which is free and does a lot o' schtuff. truly! the companies who want you to use their software like Nero, who use to dominate still exist, and I get their advertising that I will get so much more if I just . . .
and, then there is win zip, which is up to version 22 I believe who just wish you to continue to use their software when 7-zip is even better for us since it all speaks, plus, it is free!
NVDA, another who gets shunted aside because it is free is, in fact, highly developed and does about as much as the ones which cost over a thousand dollars but . . . for the most part, and in fact not fancy, do it even better than what you pay for but, free is always suspect.
We're taught, and conditioned that you get what you pay for, but . . . in fact, as a song I learned long ago taught me, "it ain't necessarily so."

I went back to Win10 and tried the same but rather than "Change or Remove" I found "Add or Remove.  When I highlighted Express Burn and went to the context menu there was only one option, uninstall.
Now I'm new to Win10 and so may not know the correct place to go or the correct procedure.  Can somebody help please.  It might just be though that the option to downgrade to the free version may not be available in Win10, I just don't know.  Walter.

Subject: [TechTalk] Outlook 2010 and gmail, and outlook with pgp?

Hello,

I'm trying to get outlook 2010 working with my gmail account. I've got imap enabled on the account, and I know it's working because my phone connects and sends and receives email properly. I configure outlook and gmail per the gmail doc incoming host imap.gmail.com port 993 and ssl, and outgoing host smtp.gmail.com port 587, tls, email address and password where indicated, and that the outgoing server requires authentication and use same settings as incoming server. When I hit test connection I keep getting prompted for my email and password even though I enter the correct information and save password.

Any suggestions welcome.

Also, does outlook 2010 support pgp signing/encryption of email? I've got a pgp keypair and would like to use it to send encrypted email and to sign same?

Thanks.
Dave.
