avoiding columns

Joe Giovanelli

Hello, Everyone,

I do a lot of optical scanning; I use Docuscan Plus.

Often plays or skits are written in sujch a way that the character name and the first word of what he says is separated far enough that Docuscvan thinks that it's a column.

What I see, therefore, are the names of characters, and they are followed by what the people say. At that point we read what should be said but without the name of the person speaking the line.

I have to find all of this and then type in the names before the words to be read.

Is there a way to instruct Docuscvan to ignore column breaks?

I'm asking this here because System Access does not have the best customer support.

I appreciate any help with this.

win7 security software?

goshawk on horseback

hello all,
as certainly for the foreseeable, I plan to continue using win7, now that no more security updates will be forthcoming, I think I need to find some other security software to keep my machine hopefully protected from hacking, viruses, spy and malware, etc.
such software would need to be fully accessible, preferably with window-eyes, or if not, definitely with NVDA.
if possible it also shouldn't get in the way of the programs I already use which access the internet for what ever reason.
any ideas please?
as previously I have relied on MS security essentials and windows security updates, so haven't really had to think about this before.
I am not bothered if the software is free or paid, the major priorities here, are that it does the job, does it well, is accessible, and hopefully continues to do the job well and accessibly.

I doubt they ever sold laptops for 100 dollars.  They sell desktops for about 100 dollars.  They sell laptops for about 180 dollars.  I’m saying about because I don’t recall exactly.

That is understandable. I can handle $180. I will check it out. They might be double the desktops. Thanks for letting me know.

food delivery apps

Troy Burnham

Hi all,

I have waiter, grub hub, favor, and door dash all on my phone and they all seem accessible but I wonder if anybody has used any of these and can comment on how they work?

I've never used any of these myself but in just opening them and looking at them I see that favor shows the delivery fee for each restaurant, do the rest of them do the same thing? It appears that I have to register on the other 3 apps I mentioned besides favor and I haven't done that yet.

Is a tip expected over and above the delivery fee or is the delivery fee considered the tip? Do some restaurants use more than one delivery service or do they all just use one and there's no choice? Oh, and do I call the restaurant to make the order and then tell them I want it delivered or do I make the order through the app in some way?

Anything anybody can tell me will be greatly appreciated.

Troy

My first laptop in 2005 was awesome!

Since then, I have owned four laptops, and two of them do not have a numpad!

You really get used to using the laptop commands built into screen readers!

You do not have to keep moving your hand back and forth!

I really like my Asus laptop a lot!

I have not had one bit of problems on this for 5 and a half years, and I have installed every build of Windows 10 on it since August of 2015!

This is like a time X LOL!

It has taken a licking, and keeps on ticking!

I really like my HP laptop as well!

It has a SSD drive, and is so fast!

The Asus has a hard drive, and I can really tell the difference!

Eight Gig of ram has been plenty for my flying and everything!

Have a great one!

Re: question about temporarily unsubscribing

Gene

Its much better to go nomail.  If you have a fully setup account, you can do this with a browser as a general setting.  If not, you can do it group by group.

To go nomail for this group, you would send a blank e-mail to this address:
To resume delivery, send a blank e-mail to

If you want to resume delivery as a digest, there are other commands but I assume you want single message delivery.

The same syntax isw used with other Groups.io groups.  Name of group plus etc.

So if possible, I would like to temporarily unsubscribe if there is a
way to do this.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: windows 7 in general.

Your techie is giving you sound advice.  Microsoft Security Essentials will continue to work in Windows 7 for the foreseeable future.  Database definitions continue to be updated daily, just as they always have, and daily scans are still performed at the selected time.  If you want to continue using Windows 7 until you are ready to upgrade to Windows 10,, be sure to use a modern browser like Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox to browse the web instead of IE, and use a non-Microsoft email client like Thunderbird to maximize security.  Also, perform periodic scans with Malware Bytes, which still works with Windows 7. Contrary to what scare mongerers like Kim Kommando might claim, there are still good reasons to continue using Windows 7 because of all the problems users on this and other lists have reported with Windows 10.  Some users have reported updating their Windows 7 computers successfully to Windows 10 usig the Media Creation Tool or Update Assistant, while others have reported problems withthe upgrade, including complete loss of sound after Windows 10 was installed, requiring tech-savvy sighted help to resolve.  The latest buzz is over the newest version of the Chromium Edge browser for Windows 10, which is apparently beset by all kinds of bugs and accessibility problems, judging from the heavy traffic on the various blindness-related tech email lists.

Thanks to Norma, Monty and John for putting me on the right track.  Apologies Monty, you were not advising me to get the cable from HW, but I will plan to play it safe and get my USB Client Cable from them.  I am looking forward to having a more powerful braille terminal that plays BARD books.  Pretty cool!
