I have been looking at the sound Creative BlasterX G6. I wanted to know if anyone knows if the control pannel will work with jaws? It seems you have to use it in order to make changes to the sound card; this goes for all the sound blasters! thanks Heather

How many devices does he have or has had the Bard app installed on? I can't recall if the installation of the app is a max of 3 or 5 devices. He may need to delete some devices that he previously installed the Bard app on. This can be accomplished on the NLS website, account settings & Help near the bottom of the page. This what I was instructed to do when I was having sign-in problems when trying to log-in with a new device.

Hi Aisha,
If you're running Jaws:
Try the following:
1. Open the Settings Center with the keystroke, Insert / Jaws key + 6, on the number row, and press, Control, Shift + D, to open the Settings Center default all applications. 2. Down arrow to, User, and right arrow to open. 3. Down arrow to, Lower audio volume of programs when Jaws speaks, and press the spacebar to uncheck this box. 4. Tab to, Okay, and press enter to save and close. This feature can also be tobbled on & off by using a Layered Keystroke. Press, Insert / Jaws Key + Spacebar, lut up and press the letter, D, to toggle Audio Ducking on / off. Take care. Mike. Re: Firefox and nlsbard..?
Gene
While I gave a lower version of Firefox as an option, its not good to use old browsers for general browsing. It would be much better, from a security standpoint, and compatibility with more sites, to try Chrome or a Chrome-based browser.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
Another and perhaps better alternative might be to try NVDA. Its free and it will meet the needs of a lot of users. You can use the current Firefox if you want and as time goes by, you won't have to keep paying to upgrade JAWS. Gene

How recent was this installation? BARD had issues with the previous ap update and one released a week or so ago fixed the issue of needing to log in at the BARD site in able to conduct a search. The most recent version of BARD is 1.3.2.

Also, he needs to be registered with BARD and be sure his account is authorized to use his iPhone. It is possible to have multiple devices authorized, but no downloads can take place on an unauthorized device. I'm not sure about just logging in using the app, though. I think it was on this list where I said, recently, that there is a price to be paid when people do things that make it less likely that blind people will learn the actual way to do things. I'm not saying people shouldn't use sites like Yourtube, but they should know how to use the actual site first. I'm not saying that you don't. I'm pointing out, as a general statement, once again, that there is a price for help that dissuades people from learning. Gene

Not sure of what screen reader it is that you are using, but yes, there is definitely a checkbox option within System Restore to show more date options.

If you are a JAWS user, you would just need to root JAWS to PC to see this options, and to check this option. Why it's not accessible I have no idea.

I have checked all the settings in the volume mixer and they are at 100, all the settings in sound settings at 100, but I am not sure what else I can do acording to google, their might be an app on my computer that is changing the volume without me knowing, but I have loads of aps.. how can I possibly know which one is causing it? also: I have noticed, in the volume mixer, a volume control marked, " unnamed", which I can not click on, view properties for, uninstall, even see what it is I'd system restore to a time when the sound worked fine, but I can't do that because the only restore point is too soon- however: if I somehow had a way to access earlier restore points, that might help.. since I can just rivert back to when the sound worked good what ever the issue is: it is really frustrating me, especially as I'm not the greatest when it comes to tech

Re: having sound issues
Smiling?
But once again, we are all quite different within our various senses, quite quite different sometimes, and quite quite similar other times. so saying that as such a blanketed matter of fact, I would strongly disagree with. Some of us have the abilities to hear certain things, to taste certain things, and to smell certain things, on and on we could go with examples, but the outcome would remain the very same. We as I know you very well know, are all different in so so many different ways where saying something so blanketed like that just isn't at all true.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
I also strongly agree with what you said below. The vast majority of people would not and could not tell the differences between a fifty dollar card and a seventy five dollar card specifically with basic equipment, but one wearing headphones would have the best chances of hearing these differences (if the person truly was able) and the equipment would not need to be class A either. Class A audiophile equipment is truly nothing cheap at all. I used to work with companies such as Van den Hul, McCormack Audio, Counterpoint and such and you are generally looking at prices starting at one piece keep in mind, for the lowest would be around fifteen hundred (which is cheap) or more and again, that is jus one piece which you can't do all that much with if you do not have other equipment such as pre-amp, amp, CD Transport, DAC etc etc. and we haven't even spoke of speakers yet right along with cabling. The point is that true audiophile equipment is nothing cheap at all, probably quite a bit more than many of you are imagining. It's truly surprising at just how high some humans out there will actually go, but again, some will be able to hear the differences there within and others will not. No different than taste so on and so forth. So taking all that into account, again most will not be able to tell, but some of us actually can. The sad thing, is for most, having an option of hearing such a system, is unfortunately not all that common of a thing at all for the vast majority of us. When you go into some studios, they are just insanely accurate (meaning that you can hear the results of circuitry changes, patch cord changes so on and so forth) because this specific studio I am speaking of was the head engineers/owner studio and he had it set up because he wanted to actually hear the various differences to whatever changes he thought up for whatever pieces. Steve McCormack is his name and we was known as having golden ears, but some people would go in there and not at all be able to hear the various differences. These were co-workers and it just surprised me that some could, and some could not hear these differences, but hen I started thinking about like I said up above, some of us can taste certain things within whatever and others for whatever reasons can not and that is just speaking of one sense. To give you an idea of the price of a Class A set up, this one spoke of up above was a low six figure studio, trust me, it's ridiculous, but it's truly a sweet thing to hear. Phenomenal would probably be more accurate of a word used.

Note that there are few if any cards below 100 dollars that are good, or which don't majorly comprimise on something. I think the 100-200 dollars is the spot that balances price and performance.

Yep, either change screen readers, browsers or both! You never know what might do the trick. I've been having good luck with Chrome lately, but I got to one site where NVDA just stuck fast and wouldn't read anything, so I switched to SA. This is one of many reasons why one should have at least two screen readers and two browsers on your computer. Ann P. Original message:

As said above, assuming that you are an NLS patron. Go to the main BARD site at: https://nlsbard.loc.gov Once signed in there, tab down to the link that says music. Hi Audrey,

There are two types of batteries. One is alkaline, which are not rechargeable. You can use these if you want. The other is nickel metal hydride, which are rechargeable. Now, even though rechargeable, they do not last forever. They last longer than alkaline, but they eventually will stop taking charges. You have to set which type of battery you are using in the file settings of your device. I have used both types and currently use alkaline. You can charge the nickel batteries by plugging into your pc using the USB line. There is a charge available from Olympus for about 40 dollars. There may be an after market charger on amazon which may cost a bit less. It is a great recorder and has the three mikes at the top of the device. If you need more info, I will try to answer. I am not a real tech person but maybe I can answer some basics if you need it. Patrick
