Ann, Amen, Amen, AMEN!!!

Microsoft disabled the autorun feature because of the disasters caused when it was active.  Even though security suites are supposed to scan (and do scan) executable files and zip files on download, it is always safer to download them and continue the process yourself.

Even in browsers that allow me to choose an option to run when download finishes, I never do, and that's because I've seen what can result.  I will sometimes even run a downloaded executable through a virustotal.com scan afterward, but before ever triggering it.  Those few minutes and steps can save a world of hurt.

Re: How to make Firefox let me choose to run rather than save a download?

Morning all,

I wouldn't change FF's options at all! It is always, always, always safer to download an executable file rather than to run it. Some of the little applets for conferencing software like to have you run them rather than save them, but you don't have to do that. If you download the executable file, you will have a copy of it in case your computer goes south, you can upload the file to Dropbox or wherever you save files. I don't know what instructions you're reading, but save whatever file it is and run it yourself. Don't let your computer control you, you control your computer.

P.S., It's always courteous to sign your posts. It allows people who reply to you to address you by name instead of saying, "Hey you!"

Re: two items

What does the phrase subject line mean? It means what it says. Its ;purpose is to describe what a message is about, the subject. A question, help, a curious problem, and so many others don't do so. Your need for help or whether a problem seems curious to you or whether you are going to ask a question tells us nothing meaningful about the subject. Its as though an author wrote a mystery novel about a crime committed in some city or other and named it a novel. His ;publisher wouldn't allow it.

Examples of good subject lines are, can't follow links using Firefox, A problem using Pontes Media Player, how do you hear audio description using Netflix, and so on.

Even if you aren't that good at writing subject lines, it would be far better to write an awkward one describing the subject than something like Help.

It is so widespread to use meaningless subject lines that I've never seen standards enforced on the lists I'm on for writing them. At the same time, messages like that below mine, now and then, help remind and inform members of what a subject line should be.

You are both being considerate of others and making it more likely that you will get good help from more people because many people decide what to read solely on the basis of the subject line.

I have a suggestion regarding subject lines. Instead of using a subject
like "Two items", it's better to use a meaningful subject line that hints at
the question you're going to ask. That way people can choose not to read the
message if they don't have anything to add. It might be better to send a
separate message for each item with a descriptive subject line for each.

Use JAWS key z, when you are at the edit field to turn the virtual PC cursor off. Then, when you are finished working with the edit field, use the same command to turn it on again. Using enter to enter forms mode instead may allow you to return to the virtual PC cursor when you don't want to if the edit field refreshes as you type. JAWS key z won't allow this.

I had this problem awhile ago on the Costco website and I think Gene told me
the workaround, but I have forgotten.

If someone could post the solution, I will pass it on.

Thanks.

Running Windows 10 2004 (OS Build 19041.450), after inserting the disk into the drive, holding the Shift key then closing the tray kept the drive from starting and I could then read the disk contents in File Explorer.  This also still works in Windows 7.

Another alternative is to click on a link in the message that says something like "Read and respond online." This will take you to a website where the message and responses are displayed. You'll find options to reply to group and sender there. I hope that helps.

Unless it were to be included by the author in the body or signature text and the person reading via the web interface is logged in when reading.   Whatever it is that is represented by the . . . in the two examples in Laz's test message would be written out in their entirety.  But if someone includes an e-mail address in a signature the presumption is that it will be visible to all recipients to begin with.

I just checked the available settings. While I wasn't going to show the addresses of \those sending messages, that isn't an option. In other words, Groups.io allows you to have e-mail addresses someone writes in the message body shown or not shown. It never allows the addresses of those appearing in the from line of messages to be shown.

The proposed change would allow addresses a member might write in the message body to be shown, such as the address of a Brailler repair business. The address of the message sender wouldn't be shown.

And, ideally, that sort of reply should occur in private anyway.  While I'm willing to share e-mail addresses of people I know with people I know, and where I'm as certain as can be that no objections would be raised, I'd never post same on a public list.

If we fix the "Reply to Sender" not showing at the bottom of TechTalk messages, that will be much, much easier to do, too.

Admin. A possible change to list settings

Gene

From the owner:

I have had a request to make a change in list settings. This doesn't affect what members see if they receive e-mails from the list. But if someone sends a message containing an e-mail address, someone searching the archives or reading messages in their browser on the site now wouldn't see it. For example, if someone sent the e-mail address of a Braille Repair service, that message wouldn't be seen in the archives or when reading mail on the web site instead of in an e-mail program.

this sounds like a reasonable change to make. I know a small number of people read messages using the browser interface and from time to time, someone may search for information and see archived messages.

If anyone has any objection to this change, let me know at gsasner@gmail.com.
I can only think of one instance where this might be objected to. Now and then, someone sends a message asking if anyone knows the e-mail address of someone a member is trying to contact who is a person, not a business. While I would expect such information to rarely, if ever, come up if someone is searching the archives for a topic, it is the only case where I can see that anyone might object. But I want to give people a chance to comment in case they do object or if I haven't thought of something that they think should be considered.

the e-mail address of the sender of the message would still be hidden, as it is now.

Gene
