Re: Windows Defender

in windows 10.
Windows Defender is very strong.
2 days back a client asked me to upgrade his laptop to windows 10 from
windows 7 home.
as I started the laptop I found it working slow and found lots of junk on it.
I removed it using jrt, adw cleaner and so on.
and would u know as I finished upgrading and oob and all as the laptop
finished windows defender sprang into action detected 2 worms and
removed them out.
it even went to that extent of asking me that it has to reboot the pc
to finish cleanup.

It appears that Kurzweil 1000 has an unrestricted version of Eloquence that you can use with NVDA.  I have no idea if it is legal or if anyone cares.  If the owners of Eloquence cared, they have had years to get Kurzweil to stop using an unrestricted version.
However, the Eloquence provided with Openbook is restricted as is Eloquence provided with other FS products.  It can only be used with FS products.

Also, I'll provide my experience using Eloquence provided by Kurzweil with NVDA.  I am not saying that others will have this experience.  I tried using it and it crashed and caused so many other programs to crash so often that I stopped experimenting with it after a few days.

I'm not at all sure this is the case, but it may be that the crashes were the result of a SAPI 4 version of Eloquence being used.  I don't recall seeing this stated anywhere, that SAPI 4 is being used but I think it is.  it appears to work alright with Kurzweil but I've seen and read that SAPI 4 may be unstable in Windows 7.

Re: mystery sound add on I don't know the name of for Thunderbird

Margaret Thomas <iluvtoread@...>

Beth and All,

I was able to spend more time on this and discovered that the plug in I thought might be called Nostalgia is really Nostalgy plugin and, from the brief description I found, doesn't sound like what you are looking for:

"Keyboard shortcuts to change folder, move/copy messages, with folder name auto-completion."

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunderbird/addon/nostalgy/

It sounds like Mailbox Alert may do what you want:

"Mailbox Alert allows you to specify, for each seperate mail folder, a message, sound and/or a system command that will be executed when new mail is found
there."

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/thunderbird/search/?q=mailbox+alert&appver=38.0&platform=windows

There could be other add-ons that do something similar, but I need to look when I'm fresher.

from the place one can search for add ons for TB, but think I initially
was unable to install it or get it to work due to unfamiliarity with TB

Sorry to be so vague, I'll try to find out for sure when I'm feeling

more than one folder, could you please post the information?

I like the 'Lancashire' or whatever they call that varfiant (dialect) the best of the eSpeak lot. (I'm sort-of used to early Dolphin's Hal for DOS, <LOL>). (Also, SAM - the software (or Orpheus) synth that works with Hal/Supernova?) Well, I got used to the monotony! However, it's good that the other voices are now available for NVDA.

That's a very good idea! The default voice is really horrible and I
personally know at least a handfull of people who didn't give NVDA a
chance due to that fact. Since I have phone conversations with folks
because of my business, I always recommend they try NVDA if the
subject of screen readers comes up and I've learned to add the
statement that they can change to a different language and variant or
even use a SAPI5 voice. I've helped a lot of people get set up with
the Microsoft Speech Platform 11 voices and they're very happy using
NVDA now. Laz

about screen-readers simply assume that it sounds the way it sounds and
don't use it once they hear the installation voice.

I don't think there is anything wrong with your hearing when it comes to
ESpeak. It makes me want to grit my teeth trying to understand it and to
tolerate the very sound of it. I love Australian accents but this is
terrible. I will probably spend more time trying to use and learn NVDA

the

Australian
accents; I understand them just fine. Somehow, those voices are just too
something. I've tried running them real slow and still can't get used to

Running Windows 8.1 64 bit (is there a 32 bit version of Windows 8) on occasion, when I press windows Key + d, not only am I taken to the desktop, but all open Windows except the program I was in when I invoked the keystroke are closed. What could cause this situation?

I don't have JAWS on my taskbar; I have it in the System Tray, where I prefer it to be.

Hi Flor,
The Windows D keystroke doesn't do that for me. It toggles between the
desktop and JAWS.. I started in Outlook and it does not return me to
Outlook.

WindowsD is a toggle to the desktop and back. So when you press it again,
like ant alt-tab, it returns you to where you were.

Can you use Windows D, when you want to leave a file open and Alt Tab back
to it when needed?

I have noticed this behavior as well. Windows key-M does not always move
focus to the desktop in Windows 7 on the first try as it did in XP. I
sometimes have to execute it twice to focus on the desktop. But Windows
key-D always seems to move focus to the desktop right away. So what is the
real difference between these two keystroke commands, anyway?

This is a known problem. I have to issue the command Windows key m twice
almost every time I want to return to the desktop. If you want to avoid the
problem, just issue the command twice quickly instead of once. I have the
problem in Windows 7 and I've seen others discuss it as well. I wouldn't be
surprised if many users in Windows 7 and higher have this problem.

Hi all,

I do a lot of alt tabbing between windows, so I like to have my desktop only
show up when I hit Windows plus m. However, in the last couple of days, the
first time I hit windows key plus m, it is taking me to a place where it
just says start. I have to do it a second time to get to the desktop.

I thought this might be a keyboard issue, so I went and bought a new
keyboard, but it hasn't changed anything. *sigh*

Any suggestions?

Re: Question about the Windows m keystroke

It is an either/or toggle, and that’s it, LOL. When you opened a program from the desktop, you are then no longer *on* the desktop. So, it’s a desktop + [plus] toggle. (I put in that word plus so that those readers with screen-reader punctuation etc off would hear it.)

I consider the fact that Windows key d is a toggle to be almost irrelevant.  Yes, it's a toggle, but only if you go to the desktop and stay on it.  Let's say, for example, that you are in Notepad.  You use Windows key d to go to the desktop and open a program from the desktop.  You are now in the program, let's say firefox as an example.  Windows key d will return you to the desktop again, it won't return you to Notepad.

Also, I suspect that using Windows key m on a lot of laptop computers is more convenient if you are using the internal keyboard.  My laptop has only one windows key, the left one.  For that reason, Windows key m is more convenient to execute.
I don't know this, but I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of laptops have only a left Windows key.

That, right there, has converted me to using win+d instead of win+m, which
is not a toggle. I'll actually probably use both. Thanks.

Also the mobile page, if entered in RSSRadio’s URL’s search field, returns RSS! or something similar, meaning that it can’t parse it. Howevedr, the corrected feed URL which you provided, gave me an idea of how such entries should look there, as it worked. (I’d tried a few URL’s previously, that didn’t work, and returned the error I have cited.)

I guess I just assumed it was the mobile page since the url ended with the word "mobile."

Well, if it is the ‘mobile page’ it doesn’t open in Safari on iOS8.4.1, the latest iOS full iteration. The feed URL, however, opens in a mobile podcatcher, as it should, and as an RSS Feed on the PC, as so it should.

That's because it was the mobile page.
is the page for the actual feed.

When I use firefox to follow the link, a web page comes up showing various editions of a program.  However, the page contains no information about how to subscribe and it doesn't look like a podcast subscription page to me, at least not the few I've seen.  I don't subscribe to podcasts, I listen to them now and then but not by subscribing.  I don't think this page is the subscription page.  It looks like a page where people can listen to the podcasts without subscribing.

Sorry, when I tried that link, I got: “Safari cannot open the page because the server cannot be found.”

What’s the name of the podcast? In the podcatching clients that I have on my iPhone, I know of DownCast and RSSRadio, it’s best to search by the podcast title.

Hi
I found a podcast I want to subscribe to, but icatcher; my podcast player of choice, says the link is invalid.
I have emailed the developer, and I'm waiting for response. In the meantime, I was wondering if one of you guys could help me.
How could I subscribed to this podcast?
Here's the link,

Thanks,
Jessica
