Gene, by the layout, I mean that the keys used for navigating are different than what screen readers used in the past. The ones used for line, word and character seem strange to me.

Marta, you do not need Codex or Calliber to read Kindle books. Those programs are for converting books and they do not work as well because the drm keeps being changed.
