Openbook 9 and a Epson Scanner
Mike B <mb69mach1@...>
Hi All,
A friend is running Windows 7 Home 32
bit, Jaws 13, Openbook 9 and an Epson Perfection V39 flatbed scanner. When
he gives the command to scan a document the scanner starts, but it won't stop
and keeps making a ding sound every few seconds while scanning! You have
to press the spacebar to interrupt / stop the scan or it'll never stop.
Also, it never acquires any text for Openbook to read. I don't have much
experience with diagnosing scanners especially through a tandem session, so I
don't have a clue as to why this behavior is happening. If anyone
knows why this is happening, would you please enlighten me? All help will
be greatly appreciated and graciously accepted. Thank y'all very
much.
Take care. Mike. Sennt from my iBarstool. Book: a utensil used to pass time while waiting for the computer repairman!

It's probably Openbook that is making the sound,
but not being able to hear the sound, I don't know that. Openbook makes a
repeated sound by default when scanning.
I'm not sure what the problem is but is version 9
of Openbook being used? I'd have to look in the settings to find how to
select the scanner being used. See if there are multiple choices for the
scanner, if your friend knows how to check and try others. Sometimes there
are choices such as unknown twain with and then the name of the scanner.
There may be one or two others for the same scanner.
If that doesn't help, I don't think I have other
suggestions. If you need to know how to find the selections, ask
here.

Even if you don't know, you can experiment.
The worst that will happen is an error message.

Hi Chris,
This particular model doesn't have a camera lock, and yes that's the first thing I thought of but, it's the same model as mine so I know for sure it doesn't have a lock.

Hi Mike. Just a thought, but does the scanner have a lock, many do, and has your friend checked to make sure it’s not on?

Hi George,
The Epson Perfection WIA is what's selected in device selection. There are 2 choices the fore mentioned and Epson Perfection.

Hi All,
A friend is running Windows 7 Home 32 bit, Jaws 13, Openbook 9 and an Epson Perfection V39 flatbed scanner. When he gives the command to scan a document the scanner starts, but it won't stop and keeps making a ding sound every few seconds while scanning! You have to press the spacebar to interrupt / stop the scan or it'll never stop. Also, it never acquires any text for Openbook to read. I don't have much experience with diagnosing scanners especially through a tandem session, so I don't have a clue as to why this behavior is happening. If anyone knows why this is happening, would you please enlighten me? All help will be greatly appreciated and graciously accepted. Thank y'all very much.

Nor have I, which makes me wondering if the scanner is ready for that old technology junk box in the sky.

Hi Chris,
What I want to try is using the scanner with Windows Fax & Scan to see if the scanner acts the same way. I've never run into a situation where the scanner won't stop scanning until you force it to stop.

Hi again Mike. Have you tried the scanner with another OCR source, such as jaws OCR, to see if the scanner is faulty?

Hi George,
Yes, that's all been done.

You need to have the drivers installed for the scanner before you will get it to work along with the Epson scanner program

It would be an easy enough thing to try it with jaws OCR. I know you are running jaws 13, but you could install a later version in 40 minute mode and give it a go.

One more thing to try with your scanner, if it's a
usb 2.0 scanner then make sure it's plugged into a 2.0 port. and one more thing,
if you have more than 1 2.0 ports try a few different ones because I've seen 2.0
ports fail. If it is a 2.0 scanner and it's connected to a usb 3.0 port
this could be the whole promblem. Usually usb 3.0 devices will work in a 2.0
device but you won't get the best performance, however I have some usb 2.0
devices that will not work in a usb 3.0 pport. This is a long shot, but has
happened, That the software may have gotten installed but for some reason the
install went a little crazy, actually since were're talking about open book it
seemed like that happened a few times, but it was a long time ago, so I
can't be too sure.

Hi Wayne & All,
Okay, this is what happened. I
got some sighted help at the other end so, we found that the scanner would work
correctly using Windows Fax & Scan or using the buttons on the
scanner. So, we uninstalled / reinstalled OB9, we unplugged the USB cable
from the computer and plugged it into a different USB port, and the damn thing
still wouldn't work correctly, it would keep scanning! So, we chose the
Epson driver without the WIA in device selection, and in device selection
properties we checked a box, Allow scanner to finish when cancelling a
scan. Well, I'll be damned, Openbook and the scanner are now both working
perfectly! Thank you all for your input. Take care. Mike. Sennt from my iBarstool. Book: a utensil used to pass time while waiting for the computer repairman!
