Here is an interesting security tool which might be
worth a look.
Description from SnapFiles:
Cybereason RansomFree is a security application
that protects you from ransomeware, which are malicious programs that encrypt
the files on your computer, making them inaccessible, and demand a ransom
payment to restore access. Cybereason RansomFree watches the way
applications interact with files, and when it detects ransomware behavior, it
stops it immediately before the files are encrypted. The application uses pure
behavioral detection techniques and does not rely on malware signatures. Once
you install RansomFree, you are automatically protected, there is no interface
and no configuration options other than a tray icon that indicates that the
protection is active.

Note that this tool seems to have one of those
pesky tray icons without a text label so you will not see it in the list
displayed by JAWS when pressing Insert+F11. However, if you use the native
Windows function Windows key+B to view the list, you should see an unlabeled
icon displayed here after installing the program.

Also according to some of the comments, be aware
that apparently the program creates some random files and documents in a few
locations to assist in the detection process. These files
are harmless and should not be deleted.

Dude come on now. Do you forget who you're talking to? I only post software from reliable sources. And if by some chance it happens to be rogue malware, I'll be one of the first to suffer the consequences since I'm running it myself. Seriously though, SnapFiles is a well established software portal and they test all new applications before posting them.

hmm, I’m wondering if I should download it and give it a try, but how does

True enough, and I can certainly understand
wanting to wait for some reviews, but it seems to be light on resources so I
don't mind leaving it running in the background. Although I may not be the
best person for testing such tools since I'm pretty good about avoiding
malware infections. It will have to be tested by specialists who
intentionally infect machines with ransomware to see how well it truly
performs.

If this program is effective and is based on
behavior rather than on program signature, that raises the question of how easy
it might be for malware programmers to somehow circumvent the program. I'm
not a tech and this is my generalization, which may be too broad but it's my
understanding that there is a way around anything. So if this program
becomes popular, I wouldn't be surprised if somehow, malware programmers can
work around it. Malware programmers have already designed malware that can
elude detection by somehow installing itself in ways that even behavior
algorithms don't see, as I recall the little I've read about this.
I hope there is discussion of this question. It just
sounds too good to be true, or true for long without a cat and mouse game
beginning.

You could make that argument for almost any type
of security/antivirus software. Whether it is based on virus
definition databases or behavioral detection, no protection will ever be a
hundred percent effective or undefeatable. It is up to the developers to
wage this constant battle and update the software's capabilities, no matter what
detection methods are being used. The developer claims the
software will be updated regularly to implement new techniques.
I don't see anything here that is too good to be true. The software claims
to offer a specific type of protection. It does not claim to be a hundred
percent effective, nor does it suggest that it is a substitute for other
types of protection. Like most similar specialized security tools, it
is intended to be run in addition to, not instead of antimalware/antivirus
software.

That may be the primary method used to distribute
ransomware, but it may not be the only way and keep in mind that it is not
just one specific virus. There are several variants in circulation and I'm
sure others will be developed. I don't think you can depend on Email
being the only medium which will be used to spread this kind of
attack.

You can get it in different ways. If it were
as easy as not opening e-mail attachments, then there could be a massive
education campaign and the problem could be significantly cut down. this
is not necessarily a virus. the user may get ransom ware by going to sites
where advertising or the site has been hacked and where the site may try to
download it onto the machine. The person may get it by opening an e-mail
attachment. There may be other ways.

True
enough, and I can certainly understand wanting to wait for some reviews, but it
seems to be light on resources so I don't mind leaving it running in the
background. Although I may not be the best person for testing such tools
since I'm pretty good about avoiding malware infections. It will have to
be tested by specialists who intentionally infect machines with ransomware to
see how well it truly performs.

[TechTalk] RansomFree - Protect your computer from

Here
is an interesting security tool which might be worth a look.
Description
from SnapFiles:
Cybereason
RansomFree is a security application that protects you from ransomeware,
which are malicious programs that encrypt the files on your computer,
making them inaccessible, and demand a ransom payment to restore access.
Cybereason RansomFree watches the way applications interact with files,
and when it detects ransomware behavior, it stops it immediately before
the files are encrypted. The application uses pure behavioral detection
techniques and does not rely on malware signatures. Once you install
RansomFree, you are automatically protected, there is no interface and
no configuration options other than a tray icon that indicates that the
protection is active.

The following article briefly mentions various ways
ransomeware can spread. it also discusses a way that was evidently new or
quite new when this article was written. It illustrates why I believe that
even experienced users should use antimalware programs. If you don't, you
may be infected and even if you have good backups, you may still have
consequences such as passwords stolen before you realize you are infected and
restore from a backup. Using antimalware programs doesn't guarantee you
won't be infected but it can help a lot to reduce the chances if you run good
quality antimalware programs.
If avoiding malware were easy, such as just not
opening attachments in messages, I wouldn't bother with antimalware
programs. But many times, malware can be spread with the user doing
nothing except visiting a malicious web site or a site with hacked
advertising.
