Castro Questions

Sent from my iPhoneIs there any type of tutorials for this podcatcher?
I was looking at the Siri shortcuts. However, when I would try to install them, I was not allowed to do so. There must be some first step that I’m missing. Thanks.

Lynn, I put in my six-digit passcode one time for an update, followed by thumb print on my SE, then later had to get outside in bright sunshine to do facial, when I replaced the SE. I had to do that to have access to the Cloud and screen sharing with Apple Accessibility.

So, I just checked my Settings, and I think that if you get into Settings and enter on the first thing, which should be your name, and it says Apple ID. You should have the place there to enter your passcode. When I did, I had the choice of six or four. I figured, it's free, I might as well get as much as I can, so I put in six, LOL. HTH.

Hi Carolyn,

I’ve narrowed the problem down to I can’t install siri shortcuts using Castro because my shortcut security settings won’t allow for it. Now I have to figure out how to allow Castro shortcuts to be installed.

Wow, I wonder why? Of course, you always can call Apple Accessibility. They can't screen share with you until you get that in place, but they can give directions. In fact, I like it when they do screen share, because when I used them, the guy told me where to go to do what, rather than just doing it, then me having to get him to try to explain.

Hey Lynn. Jonathan Mosen did an excellent demo on castro on his Mosen at large podcast a little while ago. I can't recall the episode number. I'll bet if you reached out to him he could answer your questions.

There are two podcasts which Jonathan recorded covering the use of Castro. First, a very recent episode, that being episode 44, demonstrates the newly added Siri capabilities which were recently added to Castro. Please note that this is really a demonstration and not a full tutorial. Episode
18 is a general demonstration of Castro. I haven't yet
heard this episode but I plan to as I recently switched to Castro
because of Jonathan's recommendation. David Goldfield, Blindness Assistive Technology Specialist JAWS Certified, 2019 WWW.DavidGoldfield.org On 6/23/2020 5:00 AM, chris judge

I just started using it as well. I’ve only broken the surface. I was able to tell siri to play a certain podcast, and even skip to the next chapter. I didn’t have to do anything regarding short cuts to make this happen. I just followed along with Jonathan on Saturday while listening to the mushroom. I don’t think he went in detail as to how to set up siri short cuts.

Hi Chris And David,

Yes, episode 18 is excellent and I’ve learned a lot from it. Not sure why one would actually need the Siri shortcuts. But, I’m slowly working my way to making Castro my default podcatcher. As I think about it, the one shortcut that I wish I could install is the import Apple podcasts. I appreciate both of your notes.

You can tell siri to play the podcast. You can tell her to move to the next chapter if the podcasts support chapters. I haven't used them for anything else.

Hi Chris,

You can also tell Siri to play a podcast that you’re not subscribed to. I think that the only way to subscribe to a podcast if it’s not in Castro’s database, is to have the URL for the podcast when performing a search. I may ask Jonathan to go into detail as to how to set up the shortcuts. But, before doing that, I want to do some more exploring. To go back to Carolyn’s suggestion, I don’t think that Apple Accessible Team will know that much about Castro. But I appreciate your thoughts and suggestion.

It would be great if Jonathan could do a comprehensive presentation on siri short cuts in general.
