Browser Help Please.

Janet

Hi Everyone,
I have been having a problem trying to get to any web site do to my IE browser, so I am finally getting around to it. I can't access half of the web sites I want to. I have received many messages when I try to get to a web site, I keep getting the message saying I need to update my browser, or a message telling me I am using an outdated browser. I am using the latest IE as my browser along with Windows 7. I have this same problem regardless which web site I go to. Can someone tell me a little about Brave and Chrome browsers, as I have always just used IE, but now, IE is almost disabled! Can someone also please give me a web site to download either browser, as I am in need for a update browser as soon as possible. Is either of these browsers difficult to be configured, if so, can someone please tell me what I need to do?

Thank you all in advance.
Janet

Browsing is browsing with any browser that supports the virtual pc cursor or browse mode, whatever your screen-reader calls it. Firefox, Chrome, and The Brave browser all support The Virtual PC Cursor or Browse mode. that's the same thing that you have been using in Internet Explorer. Its unfortunate that so many people have needless fear and use an increasingly oudated browser. Use control l instead of control o to move to the address bar, where you type an address.
Book marks are gotten to a little differently than in Internet Explorer. I'll send more information about an easy way to work with them in another message. I sent such a message earlier to another list. Others will, I hope, tell you more about im;portting book marks. but with either browser, you will see that navigating web pages is just about identical to doing so in Internet Explorer. A page may display something a little differently, for example, a button or link may show different words. On one site I've worked with to upload files, the button may say something like browse with one browser and select a file with another browser. Sometimes, different browsers see different parts of code on web pages.

As far as which browser to use between the Brave browser and Google Chrome, if you want to use a browser that takes what I consider an ethical stance towards advertisements on web sites, the Brave browser does. I'll provide a link to the page where you can read about it and download it.

Aside from its policies on advertising by web sites, the browser itself is very similar to the Chrome browser, it is based on Chrome.

You will get faster loading of web sites because a lot of commercials are blocked and its safer because, at times advertising is hacked and hackers try to download malware through hacked advertising.

Yes, if you are used to IE you may want the favorites to be in the favorites folder. You can still do this, it works the same way for chrome browsers, edge, a little different but, still the same consept. These instructions are for the brave browser, it works too with chrome, if you want to use that browser too. I did this off my pc because I did not want to have to fined the pathway to where ever they keep the favorites stored with chrome, brave or edge. So I decided to use the favorites folder that IE used to use. It is organized and I did not have to emport or export favorites to any browser. SO here you go:
So for example go to www.nfb.org in brave, hit the alt key and arrow up to more tools and arrow down to create shortcut. You can name the site like national federation of the blind home page and tab twice to create. It will be placed on the desktop so you can cut it and place it in the favorites folder in windows10. So you can use any browser to git to any site from your favorites. and you can keep the favorites folder and copy that folder to any pc. You can do the same thing with edge but, it will most likely place the favorite in the downloads folder instead of the desktop like chrome and brave unless you change the pathway. Also if you have issues with the browser, if you have to redo the browser, your favorites are saved so you can get back to them. If anyone knows of a better way, please share! Cheers Heather

One way to open bookmarks in an interface similar to Internet Explorer is to open the menu, the program has only one menu, with alt f. The menu may open if you press and release alt, then type f, but I'm not sure it always does so I hold alt and type f. Then either up or down arrow to bookmarks and press enter or type b and press enter.

I don't think there is a short cut command to get into this interface such as control a oin Internet Explorer.

If you have been adding book marks in Internet Explorer with control d, that command works in Chrome.

Here is the message I sent to another list today. You may find it very useful in working with book marks in Chrome. I have slightly modified it to make it fit well witgh this message.

I've discussed how to open a book mark interface similar to Internet Explorer's. But I almost never look at or work with the list. there is a much more efficient way to
work with book marks and it doesn't matter where they are in the book marks
folders. This method finds it wherever it is, so I never organize them.
Go to the address bar, control l.
Then type part of what you are searching for. You may have to experiment to
se what works well and sometimes though typing part of what you are looking
for usually works well, you may have to experiment when looking for a
particular book mark to see what part of the name works well.

As an example, when I want to find the New York Times book mark, I type
times in the address bar. Then I start up arrowing. the book mark is
likely to be found much faster by up arrowing.

If I want to find something else, If I want to find my Door Dash book mark,
I type door and up arrow. If I want to find the All Things Considered book
mark, I type things and up arrow. To go to a result, press enter on it.

If you want to start over or look for something else or for the same thing
in a different way, just use the command control l again and type what you
want. It will overwrite what is there and you can up or down arrow to see
what is found.

I use a service for everything I ever want to save!!! Therefore I don't
have to import any bookmarks if I want to test a browser for a while.
When I say everything, I mean it. This thing probably has over 10000

Hello:

Could someone send the link to download the Brave browser?

Thanks

When I installed the Brave browser, a message came up that I should update Adobe flash player and update Brave.

I am Leary about doing this, as Adobe is not going to be supported any longer.

I am not sure this is a legitimate update.  I can’t get to the browser without doing this.

Anyone else see this message?

Brian Vogel <britechguy@...>

The only messages I've ever seen were the ones saying that support for Flash was being dropped, but it's been so long I can't recall what they said.

I have never had Brave suggest I do something unsafe, so I tend to follow what it requests.

It would help to have the exact message text before advising, as I can't be certain what you're being told.

Well, that never happened when I installed the program. Did you get it off the brave site? I wonder why it is not on www.ninite.com like all the other browsers are? I use that site, no weird software comes with the programs! cheers Heather

Holly,

I don't know what's going on here, as everything is showing Chrome, which Brave does not do, and it certainly doesn't present the Chrome logo.  This appears to be in Chrome, not Brave.

Holly,

Also, even weirder as far as I'm concerned, at the beginning of the text you cut and pasted the bit about the Adobe Flash Player update is a click-through link that begins with:  http://testupgrade.getstablesystemsupdate.work/

This is something that's completely out of the realm of anything I've ever encountered, period.  This looks like some sort of third-party updater, which, as far as I'm concerned as a computer repair tech, is the spawn of satan.

I have tried un-installing it and re-installing it a couple of times, and still the same thing.

There was an Adobe update a few weeks ago. A Google search disclosed the following:
As previously announced in July 2017, Adobe will stop distributing and updating Flash Player after December 31, 2020

I am very skeptical there is anything wrong with whatever messages you got. But the thing that puzzles me is whether Brave updates itself as Chrome does. I just checked and it does but if you have downloaded an older version, it may be a version that doesn't. See this article. Did you download brave from the site the support recommends?
https://support.brave.com/hc/en-us/articles/360042816611-Why-isn-t-Brave-updating-automatically-on-Windows-
And did you download the versions they discuss? I wonder if you downloade a version, in some way that doesn't automatically update itself or if there is some sort of error preventing it from doing so.

Can't explain it.  I've never seen anything like this coming from the folks at Brave, and here's the download link:  https://laptop-updates.brave.com/latest/winx64 (presuming you're on 64-bit Windows).
