Something missing from the NVDA menu?

Sharon Hooley

Hi,

Nowadays when I navigate options in NVDA, I frequently encounter just announcements such as alt, and Alt plus. Maybe that's why I can't seem to navigate the menu? Is there a missing script, or an adjustment I must make in the latest version of Windows 10? Any input would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

I don't know why you are hearing that. If you are talking about the NVDA key n menu, it should work without modification. What happens when you use read current object on an item, if you are using the desktop layout, numpad 8. I doubt you will hear the name read out, but its worth trying.

Also, have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling NVDA? Something may be corrupted.

Sharon,
I suspect that your problem might be that your punctuation level is either set to none or some punctuation. Could you tell us specifically what option you are pointing to when this occurs? Please give us detailed steps to reproduce the issue.

Hi Sharon,

Are you saying that when you press akey whether it's the, Alt key, down arrow, up arrow or Tab, this what you're hearing instead of the options or whatever you might be navigating?

If so, you can press, NVDA key + 4, on the number row above the main keyboard to toggle the speaking of command keys like arrow, tab and other  keys on and off.

Or, if you press, NVDA key + N, for the NVDA menu then press, P, for preferences and press, S, for settings

Now down arrow to, Keyboard, and tab to, speak command keys, and uncheck this checkbox.  Tab to, Okay, press enter and make sure to save your settigngs.

Stay safe and take care.  Mike.

Sharon, I understand that you're not hearing some of the options and this can make it difficult to tell us exactly where you are in the menu when the problem occurs. However, what I'm asking is that you write down each keystroke you are pressing along with what you hear as you press it. Otherwise, it may be very difficult for us to help you to figure out what is happening. Also, would you tell us which speech synthesizer you are using with NVDA?
