Question about a W D Smart ware external drive
John Holcomb II
Smart where is software that you install to check the drives health that
kind of thing. That doesn't tell me anything to even have me look up what kind of drive it might be. John

I have a 4 t b my passport external u s b drive . It is 1 year old.

It is sitting a few inches from my right hand, right now. As I am not using it, nothing is being moved to or from the drive. If I started moving files to or from the drive, or processing material on the drive, , I could lift it a fraction of an inch, as in a few millimeters, and I would feel a slight vibration as the drive is spinning, because it is a mechanical drive, not a s s d drive.

No, I meant humming as in the sense of a steady vibration, it is the spinning of the drive I refer to.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
You will only detect this spinniong if it is a mechanical drive and the drive is in use. An external drive can be plugger into your p c sith the usb cable and you will detect no spinning if no activity is happening on the drive.

vibration that I’m not sure if I feel any. Iff you do , then the question

This is all a matter of how well your
sensitivity to feel / touch is.
The only comparison I can give is to try
holding or lightly squeezing a flashdrive, and you won't feel anything because
they're SSD, so to speak.
If you hold an SSD external drive like the
Western Digital or SeaGate HDD's it's very noticeable in comparison. But,
as I said, depending on an individual's sensitivity to feel / touch.

I have very good sensativity. I wouldn’t assume that all brands and

You may very well have good sensitivity, but
that doesn't mean that everyone else does. I have both the Western Digital
and SeaGate drive in various models in 1, 2 & 4 TB sizes, probably 10 or 12
in total. You can feel when any one of them is running or not, and this
goes for the several that have bit the dust in the past. There is not an
HDD external drive I've felt yet I couldn't tell if it was running or not and
this includes Hitachi and Toshiba HDD's. But, as you say I haven't seen
them all , or felt them all , but that doesn't mean they all will.

HI list,
I have 2 external u s b hard drives, a 2 t b Toshiba, and a 4 t b w d passport. When I lift them a few mm of the desk, I fell them spinning, if any data is being processed. That’s how I know it is safe to disconnect them; nothing is happening. These are u s b powered mechanical drives I am talking about.
Cheers,
Mont
P s, the 2 t b Toshiba Canvio drive is now 8 years old. Very low mileage; I’ll see how long it lasts.

Hi Monte,

I never said everyone else does. I’m saying that you can’t assume
that drives in general vibrate enough to be detected. I don’t know how
many do and how many don’t. You may have tried detecting this with a few
drives. How many hundreds or thousands of mechanical drives are
there?
and I’m not saying how many you can detect. I’m
saying that you don’t know and can’t assume based on a small number of
drives.
Therefore, what I’m saying in conclusion is that if
someone can detect vibration on their hard drive, that tells them that they have
a mechanical drive. Not detecting vibration doesn’t tell the person
anything because we don’t know how many drives produce so little vibration that
it can’t be detected or can barely be and not certainly.
