differences/similarities between Outlook and Thunderbird

Madison Martin

Hi all,

I just downloaded Thunderbird; I’ve always used Outlook as my email client (I’m currently using the latest version of Microsoft 365), not sure I’ll switch to Thunderbird periminantly but thought I should have it in case I’m ever unable to afford to renew the Microsoft 365 subscription or something. I’m curious to know for anyone who’s used both clients what differences/similarities (if any) have you notticed between the two email clients? Also, where can I find/can anyone provide me with a list of Thunderbird keystrokes? Look forward to any info that anyone can provide me.   Using latest versions of Jaws and Windows 11. Thanks

Madison

Hi Madison,

I'm Audrey Joy in NYC.

I've been using Thunderbird for almost ten years—and Eudora before that.

Here are some Thunderbird keystrokes to get you started:

Mail loads automatically when inbox is opened; mine's set up as IMAP.

Write new message: ctrl-n
Send: Ctrl-Enter
Reply: ctrl-r
Reply all: ctrl-shift-r
Forward: ctrl-l
Open attachments: alt-m, h
Send attachments: alt-f, h, enter; then shift-tab to the treeview/files list to select the file you want to attach.

I have mine set up with the latest messages at the bottom of the list, but it can be set up either way.

If you need help, Microsoft can screen-share. Their number is 800 936:5900; follow the prompts.

Let me know if you need anything else.

Hope this helps; have a great day.

Audrey

The forward command may have been control shift f in the past but now, its control l.
Control shift f is search messages.

You mean Microsoft would help you with a program that’s not one of theirs?  I’m surprised, because I’ve always been told that they won’t do that.  That doesn’t sound like the disability number, from what I remember.  Pam.

Okay, when I start a message do I have to type in the person's address or is there a way since it says that my address book (contacts) was added as well to get someone's address to populate without typing it in? In Outlook I use control k and I really hope that Thunderbird has something similar.

When you start a message in Thunderbird, you can type the first few letters of the recipient's name into the "to" field and Thunderbird will automatically fill in the full name and email address, as long as it has been added to the address book.

Use autocomplete.  When you begin a new message, type as much or as little of the address or person's name as you wish.  If you type something that is in the address book, the rest will be placed in the field and your screen-reader will announce what has been added. If you type Gene and my address is in the address book with the name Gene as part of the whole, such as Gene@..., the entire address will be there.
If there is more than one gene, you can up and down arrow and hear the choices.
When you get to the one you want, don't press enter.  Tab to the subject line or wherever you want to be.  Moving to the address causes it to be in the address field.

It is my understanding, and I will probably be corrected if I'm wrong, that Thunderbird gets its autocomplete information from the address book and Outlook doesn't.  That is an advantage of Thunderbird.  If you change the address book, the autocomplete information is changed.  I've seen people ask over the years how to remove something from autocomplete in Outlook because removing the entry from the address book doesn't do so.

Alternatively, you can press Control plus Shift plus A to go directly to the attachments list or to add an attachment to a message you're composing. There's an NVDA add-on called Mozilla Apps Enhancements that adds even more keystrokes. Now that I think of it, the keystroke I just gave you to view and add attachments may only work if you have that add-on, but I hope I'm wrong.

Hi Abbie,

I forgot about that; thanks.
I believe it will work without the NVDA add-on.
