Hi Sharon,

Usually the text field to write in a message is just below a vertical bar symbol and depending upon how long between messages, the text field might have to be tapped on to enable editing. Once that is done, you can move down past the list of tool bar apps (I wish you could disable this tool bar list) and either type in your response or use dictation--which if you speak slowly and clearly enough--works remarkably well.
