formatting a drive

In windows 11,, CPU speed 3.4GHZ, trying to format a 4TB mechanical external disk drive. I let it go over night and it still wasn't finished. So I stopped it and did a quick format which took less than a minute. So, I'm wondering how long it should take to do a full format on a 4TB drive? Anybody else done it?
