Info on a Kindle reader please

Sugar Lopez

Hi all

I’ve never had one of these Kindle readers, so a friend of mine is having trouble seeing and is needing something to read to her until she gets her cataract procedure but can’t have it done until this Coved clears up a bit.

She is in a home so it makes it difficult and she can’t use her lap top anymore

I am needing help in locating a Kindle reader that will read to her and does anyone know where I can purchase one for her?

Thanks so much.

Her birthday is coming up and I’d like to know where and how I can do this for her soon.

Thanks in advance,

Sugar

first thought for me was Amazon...give them a call and instead of shipping it to you have them ship it directly to her.

Depending on how long the delay will be, maybe she would rather join the Library of Congress program and get books read by human readers.

I do not know that for sure, but I hear they do have text to speech.I would verify that with customer service before ordering however.
I think they can also enlarge and chage contrast to assist in low vision.

Also, what voice is used? Is there a way to hear it before purchase? Is the person likely to be satisfied with and use synthesized speech? And, as far as I know, all the books would have to be purchased. Is that reasonable?

What I would also add is that your friend would likely qualify for services from the National Library Service, even if her vision loss is only temporary.

Sugar,

Kindles can definitely read out loud. The voices are from Ivona and are fairly human sounding and easy to understand. If she needs to use the built-in screen reader to browse for and read books there may be a bit of a learning curve if she isn't used to touch screen based screen readers.

The Fire tablets do come with a screen reader called VoiceView as well as several low vision features. If someone has enough vision to open a book but just wants the book to be read aloud there is a separate text to speech function just for reading books which is separate from the screen reader.

Subject: [TechTalk] Info on a Kindle reader please

Sugar

Sugar,

While Amazon sells many different models of reading devices they can be broken down into two categories: Fire tablets and Kindle ereaders.

The Kindle ereader has a screen reader and is only used for reading material such as books, magazines, newspapers and even comic books. Other than accessing the Kindle store you can't perform other functions such as reading Web pages, checking email, downloading apps, listening to music, etc. They are primarily designed as readers.

The Fire tablets can do all of these things but they are also full-featured  tablets, meaning that you can browse the Web, check email, play music, use apps, etc. There are pros and cons to each. Both have a screen reader but I'm more familiar with the Fire tablets than the Kindle readers.

I did a little looking and the Kindel Fire will read aloud. I haven't founjd a sample yet of what it sounds like. The page says that reading is only available with a female voice and in The United States. I don't know if this is current information. It is on the Amazon site. I wouldn't assume that the voice will be something someone who doesn't use synthesized speech would wanht to hear, especially for extended listening such as reading.

I'm still looking for a sample of how the speech sounds.

The Fire tablets do come with a screen reader called VoiceView as well as several low vision features. If someone has enough vision to open a book but just wants the book to be read aloud there is a separate text to speech function just for reading books which is separate from the screen reader.

If your friend is able to purchase books via Amazon's Web store she does have the option of having Alexa read the books to her in Alexa's voice. Alexa can also play books from Audible and books can even be purchased from Audible using an Amazon Echo.

I hhate, really hate those kinds of voices, with their improper pauses in parts of sentences where pauses shouldn't occur, and their mis;pronunciation of more words than I consider good accuracy, and the odd and unusual inflections. I'm not saying others will agree, I'm saying that just because one person likes a certain speech doesn't mean someone else will. I really think the speech should be heard and by the person who will be using it as well before purchasing.

Gene,

By default the speech in the Fire tablets uses the same voice as the one used on Fire TV devices, if you've used them. There are a number of other voices available which can be optionally installed at no extra cost. Personally, I'm not a fan of any of them but the default voice isn't bad. Of course, one's perception of a synthetic voice is very subjective as a voice that I might not like might be one that you might prefer, and vice versa.

first thought for me was Amazon...give them a call and instead of shipping it to you have them ship it directly to her.

Subject: [TechTalk] Info on a Kindle reader please

Sugar

I hhate, really hate those kinds of voices, with their improper pauses in parts of sentences where pauses shouldn't occur, and their mis;pronunciation of more words than I consider good accuracy, and the odd and unusual inflections. I'm not saying others will agree, I'm saying that just because one person likes a certain speech doesn't mean someone else will. I really think the speech should be heard and by the person who will be using it as well before purchasing.

Sugar,

Kindles can definitely read out loud. The voices are from Ivona and are
fairly human sounding and easy to understand. If she needs to use the
built-in screen reader to browse for and read books there may be a bit of a
learning curve if she isn't used to touch screen based screen readers.

I do not know that for sure, but I hear they do have text to speech.I would
verify that with customer service before ordering however.

I think they can also enlarge and chage contrast to assist in low vision.

Yes, thanks Dave. I plan to do so

I just want to make sure she gets what she needs.

Will all kindle readers read to her?

Thanks so much
